Soooo.... with the snow on its way, i decided to throw on the winter tires.

however, once i got to the part where i needed the key for the OEM locking lug nut...i soon realized that the key was not in my glove box (where its been for the past 4 years).

I've been searching frantically all over my car (have underground parking in a condo, so its not "lost" in a messy garage) and searching my house, for 2 hours, I have no idea where it is...and I'm kinda freakin out a bit...

and of course I no longer have all seasons, i have SUMMER only tires. because why do i need all seasons when i have WINTERS! (FML)

sooo with that said im kind of on a time constraint with this mess.....

any idea how screwed i am? I read on another post that the dealers should have a "master" key or atleast one of the same key to get the damn things off. (i shot FLIPDADY a pm already, waiting for a reply)

on that note, does anyone have an extra 4 OEM chrome lug nuts they'd like to sell?

Check where the jack is stored or maybe still in the lug wrench

I broke my lug nut key a few months ago. I just went to the mazda dealer and they had a box full of the different types of OEM "master" keys. I bought one for $15

Check the spare tire area. I found mine there once.

i checked EVERYWHERE! emptied the glove box multiple times, center console, foot wells, under teh seats, inside the floor vents, all the storage space in teh trunk, spare tire well. in my emergency kit bag.

if i can get a key from the dealer (especially for $15) i'll be insanely happy

Did you check inside the lug wrench? I found my key wedged in there for 6 months. Didn't even notice until it was time to swap rims

What dealership was this as that's a great deal for $15.?

Normally, the Dealerships have a set of master keys and will take your set off. You usually then have to purchase another lock set key (key , 4 locks).

There are other posts about getting a socket and hammering it on to remove the locks and then putting back on the OEM lugs to get you by for swapping out to your winters until you can get another set.

You can check Kijiji as there's always someone posting Mazda lock keys or you can get aftermarket McGuards from Cdn. Tire. Many options here.

This doesn't make sense. Why would THEY be the ones to take it off?
It's not like the dealership doesn't believe it's you're car to begin with.
And why would they make you buy another set?

What doesn't make sense? There are many times that the dealership has worked on my car without using my Key. Using the master key set, they would be able to remove the OP's lock nuts. I'm assuming he's using the Mazda locks that came with the car if they are not aftermarket, hence going back to the dealership.

As for not knowing who's car, I guess they'd look at the registration and the person bringing the car in if they don't know you at the dealership already from service records.

They would make you buy another set as they're not going to give you their master key otherwise what would they use for themselves?

I'm hoping that the dealer will have a box of keys i can try... Not likely.... Bc I was supposed to have been given a card or paper with the key# and info on it. Which I don't recall ever seeing..... Soooooo yeah...well see what the dealer says...

Sorry bro - I totally read it wrong.
I thought you were saying that he can't buy the key and that his only option was to pay the stealership some ridiculous amount of money.

LOL - too early in the morning for me I guess

So Last Friday i called my Dealer (Mazda of Toronto) to ask for advice and pricing to have the locked lugs removed and replaced.

When i called in to talk to the service department, I ended up getting forwarded to the Service Manager Rick, I told him my predicament; that i had lost my lug nut lock and I don't believe the dealer i bought the car from provided me with the Lug Not Lock Card either.

Rick pulled up my information on the computer, and Immediately offered to rectify the issue. He stated that because I had been a good customer to MoT (Have been going there since 2008) That he would be able to help me get the lugs off, and provide me with new set of locking lugs, Free of charge.

Yesterday I went into the dealership and true to his word Rick took care of my car in about 10mins; replacing the old locking lugs with a brand new set (with key and card)

I knew there was a reason I drove all the way up to Mazda of Toronto all these years ( I live downtown in the beaches area), between Jeff in sales, Joe in Parts, and Rick in the Service Dept., I still do believe its the best dealership out of the bunch. although once in awhile you'll get the "new guy" or something trying to up-sale you on a service you probably don't need (which happens everywhere and more frequently at that) MoT is more often than not the better of the bunch when it comes to dealerships and this goes to show that they do appreciate customer loyalty, that they're not just looking to grab your cash and send you off.

anyways, thanks for all the help/advice all. I was just very surprised at the level of service and help I received with this issue so i thought i'd share the experience.

When I leased my 3, they dealer was trying to sell me all kinds of accessories (who can blame them :)) , I said the only thing I wanted was locknuts, they told me around $50, once I said I could get them off ebay for $10ish the price dropped to that so I am sure there is not a huge cost to them for it.

Always nice to see a dealer helping out its customers though!

This is how you defeat a set of $200 Rays Lugs.

How do I know? We tried it on a friends set one night.

Im sure that's true. there's always a huge markup for items like that.

I was mainly impressed that I didn't even have to ask, I had called to get pricing to resolve my issue, and Rick just offered to take care of it for me right off the get-go

What dealer did you lease your Mazda from? Bay Mazda only charges $35 for lock nuts... Did you buy from them?

It was from Mountain Mazda in Hamilton. They gave me the locks for $10, I think it was because they were already on the car when I went to pick it up without them asking if I wanted them, and it was not worth their time to take them off.
