I have a 2004 mazda 3 with 120k on the engine. I go for regular maintenance but do not check the oil myself on a reg. basis. Is there a check oil light on the 2004 if your oil is low? also if you were low on oil would your check engine light come on? I had none of these warnings and it was not yet due for an oil change , it started to make a sound like something was banging arouns when my hubby was coming home and now the mechanic said my engine was blown? should there have been some warning signs that i was out of oil? and how long do u have to drive without oil on the dipstick before probs. occur? if anyone can give me some insight.

Ya the warning indicator is the banging from your engine LOL, most likely you ran out of oil due to burning/leaking. How many km did you put on your current oil change interval? You should always check your oil at least at every fill up or every second fill up. It's going to cost you 2-4k to rebuild or replace the engine, good luck! To answer your last question if you ran the car past the dip stick it doesn't take long, these engines are pretty sensitive to oil levels.
