The inspiration for Coquitlam native Raphael Mazzucco’s new coffee table book came on the heels of a pop star blowing $1 million bucks.

Black Eyed Peas frontman will.i.am convinced Interscope records big boss Jimmy Iovine to give him a bag full of cash to produce a short film that would eventually be cut into music videos.

The money literally went south as the musician headed to Brazil for the shoot. The result of that exercise was six hours of film of hot Brazilian babes shot mostly from behind. Yes, it turns out the co-writer of “My Humps” is an ass man. Go figure.

Iovine realized he wasn’t getting a music video out of will.i.am’s fanny footage but he did get some inspiration instead.

“Will, we just lost a million dollars,” Iovine is quoted in the intro to Mazzucco’s book. “This isn’t a music video but I think it might just be the makings of a great coffee table book.”

Soon after, Iovine met Mazzucco and he and the internationally sought after photographer agreed tushes were a great topic.

“We had a few meetings and it went from there,” said Mazzucco, who now calls Montauk, Long Island home. “The name of the book ,Culo, came from Jimmy. He’s from Brooklyn and parts of his family still live there. He was back there talking to an old friend. The friend asked him ‘What’s new? What have you been working on?’ and he told him about the book and that it’s all about the backsides of women. His friend then said ‘Oh, you’re doing a culo book,’ and then he thought Culo by Mazzucco sounded really great.”

For the record, culo is a Spanish word for bum.

From there Iovine called up his music mogul buddy P. Diddy and got him on board.

“Diddy’s job was to art direct,” said Mazzucco, who does indeed call the artist formerly known as Puff Daddy, Puffy and Sean Combs, Diddy.

“Diddy would come in and look at the photos after I shot them and then he would make suggestions and then we collaborated. If something didn’t work we would just try something else. It kept changing.”

For the past two decades Mazzucco has been amassing a wide and top-notched portfolio, shooting for the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition (six covers), Vanity Fair, Marie Claire, Victoria’s Secret, Guess and Vogue, to name just a few.

But while Mazzucco’s CV is full of fashion, the Culo project leans more towards art then toothpick-thin runway models showing off their boney behinds.

“We certainly didn’t want anyone too thin in the book,” said Mazzucco. “I think it’s time for a change, you know. I have honestly never believed in seeing a girl that doesn’t look healthy. I think that’s been clear in my photography. I like a beautiful woman, not just a fashiony woman.”

That healthy and athletic aesthetic comes naturally for Mazzucco, whose past includes time spent as a professional soccer player.

“Yes, I like athletic forms,” said Mazzucco, who, in 1984, scored the Vancouver Whitecaps’ last ever NASL goal in a game against the Chicago Sting.

While Mazzucco likes to point to his master gardening father Ralph and brother Tony as great inspirations he also says the physical environment he grew up in has really informed his work.

“There is a picture in the book of three beautiful girls standing in a moss-covered forest in Langley,” said Mazzucco. “I love the natural part of that. I always have.”

Published by Simon & Schuster, Culo, which got its official launch at a star-studded, post-American Music Awards party in Los Angeles Monday, goes on sale Tuesday. To help launch the book, 26 of the large original pictures will be shown off at a handful of art shows, including Art Basel in Miami Beach.

While the book has a few celebrities on its pages, including Lady Gaga, Pam Anderson, singer Fergie and wrestler-turned-George-Clooney-main-squeeze Stacy Keibler, Mazzucco says art, not red carpet experience, was the foundation for the book. But that said, there is one famous rear end he wish he could have corralled.

“Kim Kardashian, of course, would have been great,” said Mazzucco.

The compilation process took two years and had Mazzucco, who already spends about seven months out of the year traveling, all over the globe capturing the cabooses of beautiful women.

A lot of the women in the book he has worked with in the past so he was able to come at them with the idea of them baring their behinds from a place of earned trust.

“I first started in Vancouver 20 years ago,” said the 45-year-old. “One of the very first artists I ever shot was Sarah McLachlan for Nettwerk. This year I went back to Vancouver and shot Sarah again and we figured out it had been 20 years.”

Mazzucco was in town shooting the Grammy Award-winning artist for her publicity package and figured why not ask McLachlan to drop trou.

“That was really around the time the book was in full swing,” he said about the encounter. “So her being one of the first people I shot I really wanted her to be in the book and she did it. It was sweet.”

At the recent opening of her new music school McLachlan nervously laughed when asked about baring her bum.

“Oh that, yeah I did that,” she said smiling. “They asked if they could make more prints, make posters, and I said nope, it’s enough that it’s in a book.”

I love that the whole story started with will.i.am taking $1M to shoot footage for a series of music videos and all he came back with was 6hrs of booty footage.
