View Full Version : Creak or squeak in front suspension when cold

Hi there,
I have an 08 Mazdaspeed 3. When it is colder outside, (-5c) the front suspension on my Mazdaspeed makes a horrible creaking type noise when going over even the smallest bump. You can actually hear from a block away. I have already had the control arms and stabilizer bars and bushings at the frame replaced under warranty, but it hasn't made any difference. Any thoughts?:flaming:flaming:flaming

why the smiles???...because mine '07 just started creaking this morning and I didnt drive it to practice because I wasnt sure...but now that I know that its "every speed" WOOOOOOOOOO
@Charlene: does it sound like its almost happening in the dash? (obviously be the suspension is right there) I just want to make sure its the same squeaking and not something else. I havent heard mine squeak from the outside, but ill get my dad to drive it down the street and I'll report back when I have more info on that part.

stop clogging her thread with your "supercharger" whine. You already asked this question in another thread, just wait for someone to answer you in there.
edit: my car creaks like mad when it's cold. you sure some of that sound isn't also your windshield? Those are known to make a fair bit of noise. Mine does.

That's what I hear too. It sounded like plastic pellets cluttering inside the dash.. I also hear something from the back, some creaking sound coming from the rear passenger side... But what the hell, that's how race cars are anyway. :chuckle

I didnt see her post in there, so I wanted to see if she had the same experience. I didnt ask in both threads for an anxious answer.

Replacing the bushings will not fix this. The bushings simply need grease. My 6 used to do the same thing. I greased them once and they never made noise for over 3 years.
It doesn't surprize me that your dealer didn't fix the issue. Real techs are hard to come by now a days.
Its a good thing there are people here who are willing to look after your car properly . . .

i pulled up some tsbs for noise in the speeds, couldnt find too much about the first gen, but i do agree and disagree with you celestspeed3, (not sure if i want to do this as i know the knowledge in which you carry :worship) but i was pretty sure i was reading somewhere that for mazda it is not the best idea to lubricate the bushings as it allows free play between the bushing and the stab bar during colder temps and dirt will build up and once the temps start to increase and the bushing swells a bit the dirt on the bushing would almost act as sandpaper wearing the bushing down causing more noise over time.
Now i agree that in my last car i had lubricated my bushings yearly and not had any large concerns with noise, i have not have the pleasure of owning a speed 3 and live vicariously through watching everyone else enjoy / mod theres :P and dont have the same funny quirks in my own car that you seem to enjoy and maybe down the road i will own one. now of course the information i thought i remember reading which i can not find may/ may not apply as i had mentioned i had found that lubricating the suspension components yearly as celestspeed3 had said corrected the noise problem during colder temps. i have yet to need to perform this on my current vehicle as i have had no concerns with noise.
now of course if my information is incorrect i do appologize just wanted to make a point from what i remember seeing somewhere at somepoint. the tsbs i had found for reference are:

2010-2012 MAZDASPEED3 - SQUEAK OR KNOCK NOISE FROM FRONT STABILIZER
APPLICABLE MODEL(S)/VINS
2010-2012 Mazdaspeed3
DESCRIPTION
Some vehicles may exhibit a squeak or knock noise from the front end of the vehicle when passing over a bump. This is caused by dust entering between the stabilizer bar and stabilizer bushing and damaging the coating applied to the bushing, resulting in excessive clearance.
To stop the noise, the left and right front stabilizer bushings are replaced with new ones and dust covers with bands are installed.
2010 Mazda 3
TSB: 02-10-05
2010 MAZDA3 - KNOCK / CLUNK NOISE FROM FRONT WHEN GOING OVER BUMPS
APPLICABLE MODEL(S)/VINS
2010 Mazda3 vehicles with VINs lower than JM1BL******336667 (produced before June 1, 2010)
DESCRIPTION
Some vehicles may experience a knock / clunk noise from the front of the vehicle when going over bumps. Typically the noise occurs at the right front of the vehicle with only the right front tire. Due to the impact while going over bumps, a vertical force is applied to the crossmember through the stabilizer which causes crossmember movement on the bushing. This movement is caused by the change of the surface characteristics of the bushing during hot ambient temperatures in summer. Less holding force during cold temperatures results in movement and stick-slip noise at the bushing (A) near the front (F) of the front crossmember. The bushing is now modified to reduce the movement.
NOTE: This concern is best duplicated with cold ambient temperatures below 12.8 degrees C (55 degrees F). Once the vehicle has warmed up, the concern may be difficult to duplicate.
2007 - notes this
MTOL -07/06
MAZDA3, MAZDASPEED3, MAZDA5, MAZDA6-“POP!” NOISE FROM COWL OVER BUMPS
Concern:
Some customers may complain of a ‘POP!’ noise that is heard in the front of the vehicle, particularly when going over large bumps. The noise comes from the under the hood in the upper front strut tower area, and can easily be mistaken for a front suspension noise. Upon further investigation, the front suspension components are not the cause of the noise.
Contact and movement between the cowl panel and the vehicle body may be the cause of the noise and the mounting bolts for the cowl panel need to be re- torqued .

I have always removed and cleaned the bushings yearly to remove the dirt. I see your concern but with proper maintenace it would not be a problem.
The second TSB, does this fix include new subframe bushings or a new swaybar bushing. I find the Mazda text a little confusing here. My car does this and I was going to get solid alumium bushings made if it pissed me off any more than it already does or get worse.

This problem already caused my subframe to shift on me. I was beginning to think I was driving the car to hard.
I'll save Mazda the warranty claim and fix this at home. With new bar bushings, a new swaybar and endlinks. ;)
