This is not official. However, when someone reposts a topic that has already been started (e.g. Discussing a particular video, news story, current event) and you call "REPOST!" it bugs me to no end that no one bothers to mention the pre-existing thread!
Therefore, I propose that to state "REPOST" you MUST also provide the link to the existing thread. It is both proof and good reference, for everyone. If you don't do this I will personally take it upon myself to point out that you are more incompetent than the reposter. :)
**Note good-natured sarcasm. I'm not trying to start ish, but I figured this would be good practice on the board.**
ill practice safe sex
but safe posting efffff

I like this idea. I don't understand why it's even necessary to call someone out for reposting something lol, unless we're really trying to save bandwidth or something?
If nothing else we could just merge the two threads, no? Not sure if vB supports it as I haven't administered a board running vB, but i know phpBB and IPB support merging threads

Yeah, merging threads is an option and something I would do when duplicate threads come up. Its not really an issue of bandwidth, just keeping the discussions clear.
It's annoying to the people who actually pay attention on here. But the people who are posting the repost clearly don't know they are doing it.

Clearly not knowing they are doing prb b/c :
1) they don't want to search to see if it it a repost.
OR
2) if they do try and search, the search function on the forum is very limited.

Yep - otherwise they wouldn't be posting it anyway. For those who are paying attention, posting the original link lets people know where to continue the conversation.
BTW - the end result of this is that we institute a culture of people actually searching for topics before they post something. This is my experience from Focaljet.com - the majority of regular users know they have to search first or get flamed for reposting :)

Hey I reposted recently and did a search. Looked for it but didn't find it. It sometimes hard to find videos. Especially when the description is something like ( you gotta see this)

Fair enough, and this isn't really to shame anyone whose search fails, no one is perfect! But it is good to search first!

If I see a reposted thread, I just skip over it.
No big deal, I don't understand why people get so pissed for :chuckle

I hope I was clear, I'm not pissed (and I hope no one else is). Its supposed to be a good-natured ribbing type of rule. Plus it gives the reposter a friendly clue where the original thread was, rather than just an abrupt "REPOST".

I actually think this is one of the more tame threads lately. Not pissed and didnt think you were.

Didn't mean you specifically but some people lose it when there's a repost lol
I'm all for linking the original thread, it's a great idea.

For things such as viral videos, it's not always clear if it's been posted because you may think you were the first one to see it. Also as mentioned, people call their post 'Look at this!' instead of something specific to the car like 'yellow lambo flies by green corvette'
