I bought my intake about a month ago. Starting to experience some rather low milage. What's everyones KM/Tank? Yes, im asking by tank. So far, ive dropped from my 500ish, down to about 370 a tank. No, i dont have a leadfoot. Ive just switched to Premium as well.

1. If you don't have a speed, premium is just a waste of your money.
2. Intakes should really just increase fuel efficiency.

I use premium to avoid the usage of Ethanol.

The hard part is that in the winter I find my mileage decreases overall. With winter temps being all over the place Id expect weird mileage. Your intake should not decrease your mileage but hopefully would help it.

i agree with you on that but after switching from regular to premium my sedan feels less sluggish especially when accelerating

+1 Back in the warmer months, I use to get 9.8L/100km in the city.. Nowadays, I'd be lucky if I get anything below 11, I'm always in the 11~12 range now. :chuckle

Don't forget, winter tires.

Everyone's mileage is a bit off off nowadays...

out of curiosity, why are you trying to avoid ethanol??

Im going to try and do a computer reset when i get home tonight, hopefully that will re-calibrate the computer. This year, its like we dont have a f*king winter. Its +2 for F sakes. So much for WINTERPEG.

Ethanol is like adding water to your tank. It makes the plugs foul up sooner, and it will eventually clog up your filter. Its terrible stuff. I was having a discussion with my boss about it, he said by going to premium on his Sequioa, he jumped almost 5-6 MPG. Mine got slightly better, but not the best.

Hmm, don't even trust that computer IMO. You see, it calculates the stuff in maybe every 3 seconds or so. Then saves that data and add it on to future calculations. In short it is cumulative. It does not really reflect your actual fuel mileage per tank. Just use Fuelly to track it or if you have an iphone (maybe an android phone), you can always get an app that tracks fuel and stuff.. Mine says 11.0L/100km right now, But when I did the calculation, I got 11.2L/100km. So yeah, give that a shot and report back..

Last time i checked, i was sitting at 8.7L/100KM.

Never use the computer in the car, it's always off. Use the mileage you've driven compared to the fuel you've used when you fill up.

The 'winter' is more related to winter gas......it sucks.

You are pissing away money with premium in a 3. The engineers that designed the car would not have designed components into the car that would fail with available fuels (especially in N.A.). As long as the standard maintenance requirements are met, you'll be set. The $5 extra a fillup would buy you new plugs in no time, if it was needed.

Okay.... maybe its just me, but 2 people have said "dont use the computer in the car" I wasnt even aware there was one. I have the GS sport with the 6 speaker system. the 2nd screen is NOT enabled on the dash. Where is this "computer" screen that says what the milage is? I have a feeling im missing something.... :P

Depends on the trim level. Normally just assume when people ask why my mileage is so bad that they are using it. Join fuelly.com and just start putting in your information. It does everything for you and you can follow your mileage and watch for trends.

if you check on mazda.ca the averages for the 2.5 MT is 10.2 city and 6.9 hwy, now not to say these numbers are correct it says for my 2.0L i should get 8.1 city and 5.9 hwy. my car averages now between 7.8 - 8.2 L/100km, of a combo city /hwy or a 20% / 80% of driving between them . and per tank depending how its driven is between 525 to 610 km per tank. however, in the summer i average 625 - 725 + km per tank to the max of 758 Km per tank which i think was 6.1 L / 100 KM which was before i installed the intake so it may change this year, so needless to say yes you will get not as good fuel mileage in the winter, i have an intake, winter tires, currently using 5w20 synth oil soon to be 0W20, and i have replaced my trans fluid 24 000 km ago and im currently at 46 500 Km. i personally didnt notice decent fuel exonomy until after 16 000 - 24 000km which i found it started to increase as i remember when i first got my car it averaged about 500-600 per tank.

hope this will help a bit, but regrettably the 2.5L already uses more fuel and the intake im sure doesnt help matters in the winter with winter tires by any means, if you are under 16 000 - 24 000km currently on your car then keep an eye as i mentioned mine only got better after that as i could imagine the engine will of course wear in over time.

Damn, that's worse than mine. Im not complaining about the mileage at all, its OK. I just hate having such a small tank that I have to fill up twice a week. remember your air filter can affect mileage a bit. If its filthy, change or clean it. Also, probably best to mention transmission as well. 6spd, with 1-3 good pulls a day plus regular driving (read granny shifting) I do around 9.5L/100km or 500 ish a tank (give or take 225).

Winter warm ups are likely one of the culprits as well, I often warm my car up a bit before driving.

Well, tires wouldnt matter lol. im using the stock Bridgestone tires the car came with. As for the milage, im going to fill it up and see what happens. Im also going to call the dealer with the Vin, and ask them if the 2nd screen should have been turned on. As for the trim level, they said it was the GS sport hatch, assuming it comes with every other option other then leather and sunroof and the Bose system, i found it hard to believe that there was no monitoring system.

Which one do you have? I assume a speed as well? My fuel economy's actually pretty good for a guzzler. :chuckle And yes, the warming up takes about 5-10 minutes. That definitely adds to the bad economy.

Actually, somewhat related to OP, when I replaced the filter of the intake with a cleaner one, the stutering stopped. Weird, not really sure what that was about. Right now, I think I get better fuel economy. We'll see in the coming weeks/months with the new oil and stuff.

Well, i just talked to mazda. They said my screen should be on. I should have had that screen on since day one. I dont have the Nav option, but in 2011, they had all those screens on working with the music options. I made an apointment to see them. Guess im gonna swap my OEM intake on too.

I have an 07 Spd. Just CAI & AP so far. Will likely make a better tune for mileage when the weather is nice and I have a little more experience with the software. The base maps are ok but I feel they are lacking. 5-10 mins 2-4 times a day does kill the mileage a lot but Tis something I have gotten use to. Like I said, I'd rather have a bigger tank and fill 60L, I haven't been able to squeeze more than 45L in and I've run it beyond 0 kms remaining a few times.

^^ (Off topic)

You should post some of your logs! :)

Ever since I got the speed, I've pretty much gotten rid of the phrase "fuel efficient." But yeah, from what I understand, the more power mods you add, your fuel economy goes downhill. :chuckle

I'll definitely get logs up and maybe start a build thread one day. I have this horrible addiction to torque. I just can't seem to get enough of it. Haha.

Yeah any power mod SHOULD use more fuel if ratios are static. Unless you are leaning out your maps you gotta know safe for the increased air.

All things considered, this is my fuel efficient car. I will be looking into ways of optimizing fuel efficiency, my mustang drinks VP 100 like its her job.

As Hyperion said, go back to reg.gas in a non-turbo with a stock tune. This is what the car was designed for and where it will perform best, but having said that, the difference in milage you're talking about would indicate something else is going on here. Can't see an intake, installed correctly, accounting for a 25% drop in fuel economy.
