PITL – Push it to the Limit

This series is put on by the Mazda Sports Car Club. Events take place at the Bramalea Go Station in Brampton. It’s a small lot, and a ton of fun. Expect a very tight and technical course.
http://forums.redflagdeals.com/2012-autoslalom-auto-x-schedule-1150731/

anyone interested in running this year? its relatively cheap ($40~) and close by, compared to cayuga, and should be especially fun for regular mazda3s. i plan on doing a few events...

It was more of a Q&A session
They went over all the requirements for autoX and time attack, etc. The differences and blah blah blah. I zoned out after 20 mins LOL

It looked informative though

may give it a try this year though.

It's the simplest form of racing.

Basically you just gotta beat the time that the judges think you should be getting. Whoever wins with the faster time overall.

Looking over the classifications, most of us would be in the B - Stock Class

"All normally-aspirated Front Wheel Drive cars and 4-cylinder All Wheel Drive cars. Only allowable modifications are listed below."

"Larger sway-bars permitted provided they were available as an option through the OEM manufacturer for that car (must be Dealer option)."

If I understand this, those members running eibachs will not be allowed to compete since they are not a dealer option.

^ i'm guessing you'll probably be classified as B or C modified class if you don't have dealer provided swaybars.

Helmets
M2000 helmet minimum. No DOT helmets allowed.

I guess my helmet can't be used. That sucks. I was interested in trying since it's affordable and local.

im hoping there is some discretion exercised when classifying us. i would hate to run in B modified (no induction allowed) against some stripped out b16.

Minimum is a M2000 helmet for cars NOT equipped with a roll cage. For a car equipped with a cage the minimum is a SA2000. No DOT helmets allowed. (Shared loaner helmets are available).

PITL was my main autocross series last year and I ended up taking class championship in B-stock.

It's the simplest form of racing.

Well, you compete for the fastest time in your class. Fastest time overall is just to see how you did compared to all other competitors.

Eibachs will put you in B-mod. I'm usually around 2 seconds slower than the fastest time in B-mod but in the final event last year, I got within 0.1 seconds of the fastest guy in B-mod....and I was in B-stock. With a well tuned suspension, the mazda 3 can be competitive.

any other advice/tips (i.e. fees, prep etc.)

thanks.

Get there 20-30 mins before the registration ends so that you can have a chance to walk the course.

If you've never done autocross before, speak to the organizer before registration ends and they'll find an experienced member to pair you up with. Almost everyone will be willing to help so really you can ask anyone about any questions you have. Also you'll probably be confused about the course layout, take as many ride-alongs as you can...again most people will not mind especially if its the 1st or 2nd run since they're not going to put down good times anyways. When you take your first run, go slow....like half throttle slow to learn the course and to learn how to "read" the pylons, some pylons represent direction...they'll explain this to you in the drivers meeting. It also helps to get an experienced person in your car to tell you where to go since it will just look like a sea of pylons. The most challenging aspect of autocross for a beginner is learning how to "read" the pylons, once you learn how to do that you can showcase your skill. But if you dont take the time to learn the fundamentals, you'll end up missing gates/going offcourse and look like a n00b.

Last year, the entry fee included lunch, I'm not sure if they're doing that this year.

For prep, you just need a street worthy car. No leaks, enough brake pad material, no cords showing on the tires. I set my tire pressures at 40 front, 50 rear (Max PSI) to induce oversteer.

You are required to do marshall duty (picking up pylons, calling in knocked over pylons/offcourse cars) on average 2 times per event. They will schedule you and give you instruction on how to do it. If you've never done it before they'll pair you up with an experienced member.

If you need someone to show you around, just look for me in the white mazda 3.

No point in making all that power if you can't use it beyond the occasional stretch of empty road.

Despite having a broken right ankle and a broken toe on my left foot, I managed to take home 1st for the TM3 team ;)

I took some footage for you guys to show how much fun it can be. I was running a stock mazda 3 (besides having a MS3 rear sway bar) and Dunlop StarSpec tires.

May 26th is the next event. Try to come at 7am if possible since more people will be expected to attend this event with scion canada giving each participant a chance to test drive the fr-s. Heck even my brother and his friends will be there participating in nazi barges just so they can test drive the fr-s lol, aong with journalists/VIPs (that scion has invited).

As for classifications, you guys would be put into B modified due to springs and sway bars. Trust me it comes down to driver skill as mvr demonstrated (he is as
fast as a cayman, if not faster).

I'll do my best pending work - do we get to drive it through the AutoX course?!? that'd be sweeeeet!!

I'm actually privileged enough to know that I'll be able to get my hands on one for a test drive (maybe even for a weekend) once they hit, but I'm unfortunately not going to know whether it's a automatic or manual vehicle, or even what colour it is until I get it. Yes around the course.

You are lucky to get the car for a weekend, but for the rest of us, the on and off ramp will likely be the threshold limit as to how much we are allowed to push the fr-s in a normal test drive, not withstanding taking time off to go to a dealership, dealing with salesperson and lastly the availability of cars for test drives (I imagine it will be difficult and scarce).

The weekend thing is a big IF, but regardless of how long I get the car for, I'll definitely be pushing it hard without a doubt. I'll post some videos and picture when the time comes :)

I like this FRS idea a lot...it's like getting a free test run in a different car on the course before you do your actual runs...such a great idea.

May 26th is not a day to be missed! I'm definitely going since I'm going to be in the market for one in 2-3 years (hopefully they finish their Turbo/SC version by then). I've never really driving a RWD car ...(except the 458 Italia ;))... so it should be interesting.

Just got another video from last Saturday here:

Video looks like a ton of fun! I have a hard time keeping track of the course you're running, but maybe that's just due to the side camera angle.

i bet you didnt know mvr is automatic too (a lot of the guys there were automatic, including the fastest ones time wise). and yes i was in triptronic, but the layout of the course makes it impossible to hit anything beyond 2nd lol. i myself was too busy with both hands on the wheel trying to navigate the sea of pylons, while trying to look ahead, to keep shifting down to 1st.

also i don't have a transmission cooler like the 1st gens and the 2010 MK1's; wanted to keep shifting to a minimum not to mention that my atf fluid is over due for flush. just waiting on alphamotorsport to deliver my B&M cooler to jimmy this week, hopefully...

I guess on such a tight course, especially when you're inexperienced at AutoX it may even be advantageous to drive automatic since I guarantee you my first few runs would be a disaster going full out without a couple practice runs (I've never done AutoX myself btw). Judging by the sounds mvr's tires were making, it looks like I'll be needing both hands in order to avoid trashing the course :chuckle

Going early and walking the course is always key to success that day. The course changes every time, and the PITL lot is small, so you'll rarely grab 3rd.

Courses are always a sea of cones, which makes the course-walk pretty vital.

Here's a bonus: you will actually save THOUSANDS of dollars when you ride-along in a proper handling, STOCK car driven by someone experience and realize that money poured into the wrong platform can easily be beaten by starting with something smarter.

That, or at least learn to be intelligent in putting money where it matters most.

Ont thing to keep in mind, stock class only allows for shock changes iirc. Anything else bumps you up into another class, so to be competitive, one should really study the rule book before buying mods.

PS: RS3's/Star Specs or bust. (My vote is for Star Specs because of the ability to run confidently in the rain, at the risk of a bit of dry performance)

i have a similar gash (from a staple) in the middle of my tire (potenza s02). since it doesn't have tread blocks, basically slicks with just a few sipes now that its worn down, it picks up everything when it heats up and gets sticky.

I would just hone your skills at autocross before pouring money into the car or detuning it. It took me 1 year before I got "good" at autocross, the hardest part is to learn how to read the cones and look a few gates ahead. I learned on crap tires too, and when I switched over to the starspecs in my 2nd year, I got about 2-3 seconds faster and was finally able to take 1st in my class.

Keep in mind that almost everyone placing 1st/2nd in their class have at least 2 years under their belt.

There is about 8 loaner helmets, they are for everybody to use. they also provide "shower caps" for people to wear under the helmets

and the helmet must be snell 2000 or newer, so most motorcycle helmets dont meet that

Bro stop exaggerating. It's more like 4, maybe 9 tops. And besides its only the silver ones because the paint melts off and starts dripping over the exhaust manifold. Just keep an eye out for danger to manifold warning and you'll be fine.

Watching some AutoX video, how the heck can we memorize the map of the course, by the time we get close to the cone, it's probably too late to turn...

Walking the course in the beginning of the day and getting rides from other people help a lot. The rest comes from experience, mainly looking ahead, reading the cones, and "looking" a few gates ahead. Things go by much faster in video than in person, since the lens is wideangle, you cant see as far ahead in the videos.

Also PITL courses are much more technical than some other autocross courses. If you master PITL, anything else is a piece of cake.

Yup, PITL has to work a lot of track into a smaller lot. Lower speed, quite a few levels harder than say TLMC/HADA with their larger lots.

Everything on the track happens soooooo slowly. lol. I'm glad I had years of autox experience before going to the track since it really sharpens your reaction time and teaches you to be smooth with your inputs. You should try it on a larger lot before you give up on it.

Usually there are 50-60 competitors, this time we had 100+. It helps to pass the time by getting rides in other peoples cars. Also a great way to learn what youre doing right and wrong.

1337trix
05-28-2012, 12:17 PM
thats the first time i've ever been told to fix my parking - usually we take up 6-8 spots and have a tent and chairs out

you guys had to change tires in the paddock lane, that was ridiculous... i dont expect to ever see that many people out again... and if it becomes more common they might have to move to online registering

usually what happens is 80-100 cars show up to event 1, and then it slows down until the end of the year... in August its not crazy to get only 30 cars and be done 6 runs at noon, in the past they've actually done 2 events in 1 day

Being the first time in AutoX, waited over 1 hr to every run won't help me to remember how the course goes, hence I missed the course so many time and even got demotivated at the end.

Imagine driving for less than 60 sec on the course, but have to wait over 60 minutes for every run is not fun.

Maybe the Host should limit the number of participants?

It was a good experience but also a fraustated day with the long wait time.

*Helmet is an issue, because both drivers and passengers needed the helmet. Good that I brought my own, so at least I don't have to wait on the line before my run. Anyone serious about motosports should invest a $130-$150 to buy a good SA2010 or + helmet.

It is what it is. Beginners should always be lining up to get ride-alongs in other people's cars to help with memorizing the course, and seeing how much further you can push it, and where the many seconds can be found. I can relate to being overwhelmed and getting frustrated when first starting out, but look at it this way: the course changes every time, and everyone else has to relearn it every time. You'll find out why the veterans understand the course the more you go.

Tips:
- get there early, walk the course more than once--you'll eventually know what to look for and start making mental notes of when to brake/turn-in/be easy on gas
- have a friend sit shotgun and have them help with pointing the direction of the next gates
- some of the 'pros' can be damn-good navigators. What may take you a full day to improve a second or two can be accomplished in a single run with an experienced person riding shotgun. I know that from experience.

thanks for the links.

me vs mvr (below). 2.3 is noticeably faster than 2.0 as you can see him pulling away on the straights, not to mention he is a better driver :D.

LOL @ the excessive AT downshifts.

Are you in B-stock now? We can switch cars for a run if you want to see how fast the 2.0 goes :P

b-mod, on koni/road magnet now. i thought you had a 2.3 hatch :S?

i wouldn't mind switching for a run (or two) to see how close you can get to azi or the top of b-mod. curious to see if my car is capable or not lol.

If im far ahead enough of my competition, ill give up my last run to run in your car. I dont think they can score me if im in b stock using a b mod car. But you will probably be able to use my car to be scored in b mod.

Oh and i do have a 2.3L. But on such a tight course it shoudlnt make that much of a difference.

They check your helmet before and put a sticker on my right side of the helmet, but do they really care if someone wear a not SA approved helmet at the gate just before the run? (they can't see the sticker! it's on my right side). Just a thought...
