Well, as the thing says, pre-schoolers can solve it the fastest because they will look at the obvious. Programmers can do it in 1 hour because they will tend to overthink it. At least that's what the lesson I take off it. But damn, I did try figuring out a mathematical solution to this... Which you "obviously" do not need.

Here was my rough math, which you did not need....

2581 = ?

2222 = 0, 2 = 0
0 + 0 + 0 + 0 = 0

5555 = 0, 5 = 0
1111 = 0, 1 = 0

6666 = 4
1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 4, 6 = 1

6855 = 3
1 + X + 0 + 0 = 3, x = 2 therefore 8 = 2

2581 = 0 + 0 + 2 + 0 = 2

That took 45 seconds on paper plus checking against 3 other numbers

A little kid will look at it as pictures and count the "holes"

An 8 has 2 holes, while 6 and 9 each have 1 hole.

So 8869 = 6 etc....
