Hey guys. Been lurking around for a couple of months now. And I had the intention to buy a brand new Mazda as well. Now that I actually picked up my car. Now I have a thread to start and post my new baby girl.
Now I can't wait to start modding.
First things first, rustproofing, then tints. =P

I freakin LOVE how they sweep the windows back on the hatch models and I love the metallic white shade too.....but that would have added another grand to my tag n out of my budget range :( it was foglights n tints . . . . or barebones hatch.....I HATE those kinda decisions :P but I'm happy with my sedan

Thanks a lot guys. It's my first brand new car. So I'll be babying this for a really long time.

Don't forget to break it in properly, I had to constantly remind myself to follow my break-in procedure for the first 1500km before I changed the oil.

I'm not a car junkie or know a lot about cars. You could say I'm seriously a noob at this. But this is why I joined this forum so I can learn from you guys and how to be a car enthusiast. So if you guys could help me out about the proper break it in period, that'll be awesome. =P
I've asked my friends about it and they said not to go over 3k RPM and as well, change the oil at around 5000km. I'm not too sure, but can anyone tell me how to "break in" properly? Thanks. =)

Thanks! Congratz on the pick up! This is my 3rd day, and I called in sick today and for tomorrow just to drive around Brampton and practice my manual shifting. I am not so great at it yet. But the second day I got it, I've stalled almost 20 times, or more. I lost count. =(
But today, I haven't stalled yet which is good. I'm getting better on the feel of the car when I'm on an uphill. Heh. Hardest part for me, I get scared of rolling back and the guy behind me is too close. =(
Anyways, hope to see you around or maybe go for some Timmies around Brampton and talk about our brand new, awesomely looking cars. lol.

Well, there are basically 2 ways to do it. The first way is to follow your owner's manual recommendations. The other way (which I did, and a good number of other people have done) is this:

- vary the rpms as much as possible, don't stick to one rpm for extended periods of time

- don't be afraid to occasionally take it past 3000rpm, even up to 5000rpm on 3rd or 4th gear while merging on the highway or something, then coasting in 4th or 5th gear for a while to help cool things off. This is said to seat the pistons to the cylinders (something about additional friction/heat wearing in the cylinder wall lining, to ensure a better fit between piston and cylinder). Obviously don't do it all the time, and don't redline it, and don't do it where it's unsafe...

- first oil change at 1500 - 2000km to clean residual metal filings and other stuff out, and use a quality oil (Mazda oil is semi-synth).


Basically, there is no need to baby the car, but you shouldn't run out and start thrashing it either. In the end, do whatever makes you feel better, google break-in procedure for new engines and make your own decision.

Hmm... That makes a lot of sense. Thanks. I'll take this advice. As I said before,I'm not very good at manual driving yet. I still have a heavy foot. Sometimes I kinda try to down shift. I kinda press on the gas a little too hard and my RPM goes haywire and I jerk quite a bit. Is that okay? Stupid question, I know it's not okay. Haha.

But as for driving close to my work, I live in Brampton and I work at SquareOne. So that's quite a drive still. And no one from my work lives in Brampton which is good. Heh.

Not really, it's the heavy foot that is causing you that problem. When downshifting, you want to try and rev match so that the engine is at the right rpm range to avoid that jerking you mentioned. You are already doing this by pressing on the gas (after the downshift) in order to bring the rpms up so that the synchros don't have to work as hard. You just need practice in applying your right foot to the gas pedal, that's all.

1. clutch fully in
2. downshift
3. gradually let the clutch back out while stepping lightly on the gas pedal to bring rpms back up
4. repeat until you can do it smoothly

I wouldnt bother with rev matching bs until you are a pro at basic shifting. Rev matching when you downshift is not necessary so just learn the basics first and then you can attack that stuff later on.

The most important thing right now is that you learn to apply the correct amount of gas when leaving a red light/stop sign. You do not want to give it to much gas otherwise you will ride the clutch and it will wear prematurely. Too little gas and you will stall... this just takes time and patience so throwing downshifts+rev matching into the mix is just complicating things.
