How high will gas have to go before you literally will stop driving and sell your car?
(Choose the highest value you will pay for gas)

You got the poll right in the test forum, but not here.
I won't ever sell, it's my baby.
But I will bike to work.

So you created a test poll that worked, then a poll thread that didn't...

Fail

If gas became $30 per litre I'd stop driving

I had a truck with 110L tank and it got pretty shitty gas mileage so I upgraded to a a Speed3 that ran on 94 Octane about last year, but then I did some de-anti-untuning to the turbo to run on 91. Works great so far, at least better than my old Speed6 with top mounted BT. Dunno if I'll downgrade to a regular 3 and run on 89, though I'll probably try running it on 94 first to see if there's any fuel-economy difference (I hear running it on higher octane improves fuel economy!). I live in Edmonton so gas is cheaper here for now, but I'm jealous of my GF who rides her motorcycle in Quebec for like $18 a tank! :O AND she doesn't even need to have front plates! My buddy 113GT (who has a 2.5GT and gets like 900km per tank) had to fill up yesterday, waited like 45min at Costco and ended getting shot by some guy who was raging after losing on all 45 lottery tickets at the cashier.

I wish I bought a Prius...

You clearly didn't read the above posts, hater :P

This was just a hypothetical question, nothing about 'affording' gas, it's about whether or not you'd actually pay for it. Basic economics. For example, I place about $20 of value on getting to work via driving (both comfort, and speed), if it costs me more than that, it would mean by marginal costs > marginal benefits, thus I would not drive.

exactly my plan...no public transit, but I am starting to see the benefits of me taking up cycling 3 years ago....now that 30k ride to work is training, and a good commute...the car will stay parked as long as gas prices get this f*cked up...she'll get driven for meets and longer trips.

I dunno about this "maximum willingness" business. I think it just means I'll drive less, but not drive at all. Thanks to the Garmin with the OBDII transmitter, I already know how much money I spend on every trip when I shut down. Higher cost = driving less, not just stop-completely. I suppose you could reach a price where owning a car no longer makes sense because you won't cover enough miles on it and just take a taxi everywhere, but I haven't sat down and done the math on that.

Besides, when gas hits ridiculous prices, we'll either grow it (in fields or in vats), or be using non-gasoline cars. I really don't worry about this. It WILL get more expensive, but economics dictates that it won't ever be not-affordable without an alternative. For example, we still have lots and lots of lots of coal (no one ever suggests we'd run out of coal anytime soon), and if need be, we can "crack" it into gasoline.

BUT - I'll drive less, and only when necessary

You're absolutely correct in your analysis. But this question still stands. I phrased it specifically as when will you STOP driving and SELL your car. You'd be surprised at how many people I know who literally have sold their cars (mostly old american ones) and now take TTC everywhere or bike, or couple guys got a scooter.

Also, the taxi part is wrong. Taxi's rate will go up with fuel costs, so it will never be cheaper than driving.

I would go as high as $2.00. After that, I would either sell my car and buy something more fuel effecient (I really miss my EG hatch)... or start working from home a heck of alot more often.

Ah, yes, taxi rates will go up, but if you drive so little that the (fixed costs of ownership + gas * miles) is higher than (high taxi rate * miles), then it can be cheaper to taxi. i.e. there may be a point where you drive so little, it doesn't make sense to purchase, insure, and park a car, even if taxi costs a lot more than it does now. (Obviously taxi won't be for commuting to work, but for someone like me who lives downtown an walks to work, $5 per liter would mean I'd sell my car and rent out my spot. Fortunately, I doubt it get that high before we have some other type of car.)

My concern is flying, especially private airplanes. Airplanes last decades and getting one certified with a new type of engine is not economical for anything except airliners. I'd hate to have to give up one of the few things that keep me sane. :-(

what's a bus?

it's this big hard long thing in which they squeeze in as many poor and smelly people as they can. then they transport and spread the peasants to various parts of the city. i assume that's also how crime and unemployment is spread.

whenever i see a bus near my neighbourhood, i make sure to not yield and cut it off. gotta keep them away!

but the worst is go trains poseurs. they have a car, but they just drive from and to the station.

I haven't taken the bus (public transit - except for trips) in maybe 3 years or so... If gas prices did go up to an outrageous level, I'd probably find a different job closer to home. Maybe get a higher paying job just to keep my "vice." Anything that will keep me away from the TTC. :chuckle

But I don't think I can ever live without a car nowadays plus I've really gotten attached to the speed3 that I would try to make all the excuses just to drive it.

Gas is only 1.14 in Edmonton. so cheap.

First things first I'd move near my place of work so I could walk or ride a bike to work
Get a motorcycle for the summers
Switch the mazda 3 out for something with really good mileage.

Execs know this. They'll try their best to maintain a balanced gas price so that it goes right to the edge of what people are willing to pay.
