Just curious as to whether anyone has a good insurance broker they'd be willing to recommend in the west-end? I'm looking for home/auto insurance.

Several of my family members use Johnson with generally positive feedback .

They hate to pay out.
My whole family had them for auto and home insurance.

1 claim in 20 years between 3 drivers and they dicked us around for 2 weeks when there was a rash of break-ins on my street. Neither the home or the auto insurance wanted to pay out. I had to drive to their office to pick up the check because they do not courier checks if it's within/exceeds a certain amount.

The only Good thing was they rewarded AirMiles.

I'm with johson insurance, my brother has his house with Johnson and his truck and his wife has her car with Johnson's.

My sister in law is the only one who made a claim and they were great to deal with.. With no hassles. When she got in her accident she was leaving for Greece the next day and she told them that I'll be the one dealing with it cause they were leaving and they had no problem with it... All I can say is they were great to deal with.

Hmm - Polarizing experiences, but not too uncommon I guess.

I'm a bit iffy with their home insurance. Rates seem a little too good to be true... The only kicker is that the agent on the phone undervalued the replacement value of my house by a ~$100k difference from the other insurance companies, but said that if the cost of replacement exceeds the stated value, they'd pay for it all anyway. Kinda fishy.

I know Kanetix.ca quotes a lot of them for you...why not give that a go? I'd say check out The Co-operators, not the cheapest, but Canadian owned and I think good service? (I also work there...lol...maybe a little biased)

When my brother bought his house 7 years ago he was with co-operaters and they wanted $1,200 a year... 6 years ago he switched to Johnson a little over $600. He's being with them for years with no issues.

If you think their shady then don't get insurance with them...personally I would go with who is cheaper.

I'm also with Johnson for home and auto. Been with them for over 10 years (along with other family members) and so far no issues (though I've never claimed anything yet either). It's troublesome to hear, though, regarding what Default User experienced, so I hope that was just one of those odd times.

I've recently tried shopping around and to my surprise, Johnson's rates are either still cheaper or about the same as others. My particular broker is from the location in Richmond Hill. I wonder if agents from the Mississauga location are any better....

Thanks for the experiences guys :) While my genetics are pushing me towards whoever is cheapest, I'm trying to make sure that I investigate a little to make sure I have proper coverage, knock on wood.

For those of you who are with them, could I please bother you to take a quick gander at the replacement value on your policy, and see if that is even remotely close to what any other insurance company would appraise your house at? I think the generalized forumula the other guys use is $170-$180/sq. foot.

I've tried with Kanetix, but since i'm moving to a brand spanking new area, the postal code is not in their system :(

Have you tried TD Meloche Monnex? you have to be affiliated with some group or an alumni of a school though.

I've been quoting and searching for about 2 weeks now, and have essentially narrowed it down to these two guys when price is the criteria... Problem is, I'm having trouble deciding between the two, when looking beyond the price-points.

TD Home Insurance: $440
TD Car Insurance: $2185
---------------------------------------
Johnson Inc Home: $655
Johnson Car Insurance: $1663

TD:
* Significantly cheaper home insurance + this price isn't even the Alumni rate through Melonche yet
* "Big name" company to stand behind their claims?
* I've read mostly negative reviews about TD's claims process and customer service

Johnson:
* Still somewhat "heard of" company, supposedly rates reasonably well for customer service
* Replacement value assessed on our home is almost $80k less than everyone elses value
* The agent i'm dealing with kept referring to the "guaranteed replacement" statement/clause to cover any expenses above their replacement value, should the house need to be rebuilt
* When pressed, he said that they'd bump my replacement value by 5% (at an extra premium cost) if it made me feel better, but it shouldn't make a difference if the house needed to be rebuilt
* Will probably end up going with them for car insurance
* Seems like their home policy comes with a lot more "bells and whistles" that TD would be charging for:

Detached Structures, if any, $ 69,000
Personal Property, including Replacement Cost $294,000
Additional Living Expense $ 69,000
Comprehensive Personal Liability $ 1,000,000
Voluntary Medical Payments $10,000
Voluntary Property Damage $5,000
No Limit Sewer Backup Endorsement included

Which one would you choose, and are we right to question that "replacement value" assessment/policy? Thanks guys!
