CBE + CAI = Fuel Savings??

Is the cost of getting a new performance exhaust system and cold-air intake worth it when it comes to increasing fuel efficiency or is all just for sound/show? I like my current performance but if getting these twos give me better mileage I will certainly look into getting them.

you can not pair performance and fuel savings. you may notice it improve slightly but for the most part mine is the same from before the CAI and mazda speed exhaust, but that comes down to more of how you drive. otherwise if you go up in performance you go down in fuel economy.

yeah thats what I hear but some people say that the increased air-flow puts less strain on the engine, thus it is more efficient. I think what happens is people get these two and then they drive a little harder for the sound so they dont see the savings maybe? I'm no speed demon...i keep it to 70km/h max on regular roads and 125km/h max on highway. I hear so many conflicting opinions on this lol

You're essentially right, more breathing for the engine = less strain, thus less fuel used to achieve the same amount of power. Are you going to drive conservatively after you install your 800+ worth of performance parts? Probably not. So like you said, people driving harder for the sound won't see the savings...that being said, they aren't going to be monumental even if you do granny shift your way around town after blowing your money on parts you're not even using for their intended purpose.

My opinion? If you're going to buy performance parts for your car, don't be expecting to also SAVE on fuel. Be happy if/when you see the f/e is the same as before.

theres my fuelly,

it shows the difference before the CAI then from CAI to Before the Mazdaspeed exhaust and then the fill up after. it did go down, but at $800 in mods.. and the difference say from 1.0L/100km.

of course i think its better now, ( mind you i didnt pay anything for my speed exhaust from my buddy) and only $100 to have it welded on, so all in all for the intake an exhaust around $400 with tax yea for that price it was worth it. but to spend twice as much for the same zoom zoom.. i dunno.. lol yea i think it would be but i wouldnt buy the mods with the intention of fuel savings.

just like you mentioned, a cai will increase air flow. when you step on the "gas pedal" it opens up the throttle opposed to shooting gas in the cylinders. your MAF sensor will pick up the amount of air coming in and add gas accordingly. so more air = more gas =] you won't loose much, maybe 50km a tank

13:1 compression ratio with 150 HP is shy from being performance. now if it was 13:1 compression ratio say in a mazdaspeed with 260 HP then we would be talking performance. see what i mean. :chuckle

lol ok thanks for the input guys, so no CAI and exhaust for me then haha. I guess if I did more highway driving I would get better mileage (of course) but unfortunately i prob do 70% city. oh well, I bought this car for the performance and I like it. Now if only I could stick a skyactiv engine in it :P

It's been said getting an aftermarket intake can help fuel efficiency. Though most people find that fuel economy gets worse from driving harder to hear intake roar... lol it's inevitable :chuckle
