Hi Guys,

This morning I hopped into my car and cranked the engine to start, but it sounded a bit weird when it started, it revved up more than usual and the check engine came on. Its an 05 2.0L

once the car warmed up the engine sounded as smooth as usual but the check engine stayed on. i turned the car off after 5 minutes of driving to see if itll reset, but no its still on.

Has this happened to anyone, and what was the result?

Thanks in advance for the answers.

Have you tried getting the code pulled?

Have you tried getting the code pulled?

if you want to check if it goes away , take your ground off the battery terminal and plug it back , the check engine light should go away and if the problem persists it will light up again

Yes i think I'm going to try that when I get home tonight.

This hasn't happened to anyone?

That light can come on for many different reasons. Best course of action is to pull the code and start testing components related to whatever code comes out.

1. check gas cap
2. pull code

you need a pull the code to see what the problem is.. like what everybody said before

Best thing to do when a check engine light comes on is to check your engine. Have you done that yet? Does it look OK? :chuckle
jk... just had to say it

Good news boys, I turned the car on after letting it seat for a couple of hours yesterday, and the light didn't come back on anymore, and its been that way since.
I guess it just started bad the other day, made the computer think there was a problem.

So thanks all.

there is no such thing as "start bad", a machine will always run the same - if something is broken it doesnt magically fix itself - your car did not have a bad-hair-day. People often personnify this sort of problem with their car, ignore it, and something drastic happens. Take it to a dealer to read if any code was stored in the computer.

I dunno... i was on a roadtrip and got a CEL once, cleared it on the spot and it didn't come back before I sold it, which was 20,000km later...

Before taking any guesses, do what most people are suggesting. Take it to a shop and have it scanned.

You need to find someone who has a code reader and get it checked out, it's ALWAYS a good idea to check what the code was. That way you know what threw the code and what may be an issue down the road if stuff starts acting up again.

Best investment I ever made was buying a OBDII code reader at Canadian Tire when it was on sale. If you use the code reader TWICE it's paid for itself, considering most places will charge to pull a code for you. I know in the states Autozone does free OBDII code scans, dunno if any place in Ontario does the same.

I know on my old car it would throw a code for Cylinder Misfire on a crappy startup, but then the car would run fine for ages without issues.

Screw a shop! $70 friggen bucks to plug in a reader lol. OP depending on where you live, if you get another code, I can meet you at kennedy Commons, I'll pull the code for a coffee. (large DD w milk ;-) )

You guys ever hear of phantom codes? Yes I think you techs here must have...it happens, cliches in the computer, dust or dirt in the fuel can cause codes that appear once and never again, several things can cause erroneous codes!....Now if the code persists, thats a different story, if it pops up a second time after it's cleared then THAT warrants having the code pulled....IMHO

THIS.

i got "lean at idle bank 1" a couple times in my mazda. cleared em, and never came back.
same with my VW. "camshaft over advanced" or something.

also, a CEL should turn off once you have 3 successful trips. (key on, criteria met, key off). criteria could be hit a certain speed, or a certain temp.
either way, clear it, and if it doesnt come back, you're good tog

Most PartSource's will read a code for you free of charge. I would call ahead to make sure they do it, some of the smaller ones don't.

If it ever comes back, take 10 minutes and get PartSource to read it. All it will cost is a bit of time.

That's why I asked where he was located. I don't mind as long as someone calls in advance.

This is not 100% accurate. Some codes are really weird. Oddly GM has some that are 15 & 50 cycles deep. These are the kinds you clear and they come right back and are only cleared (cured) by certain cycles
Not exactly the norm but not something that isn't come across every once in a while. The best thing to do is to read the code, not to clear it.

i've had some really slow/bad starts before, where the engine just doesn't catch as fast as it normally would. it sputters and dies - It takes about 3-4 seconds to successfully start after that happens, Assuming because it needs to burn off the extra fuel that hasn't burned. Even THAT doesn't trigger a CEL. my dad's accord would throw one every time the engine Misfired, which was annoying.

Yeah, like everyone else - Get it checked - Otherwise you'll always be afraid your car might blow up at any time :-P
