Really bemoaning my Honda fit, its wonderful on gas, practical and good looking in my opinion but the drive is just miserable i find myself daydreaming on kijiji cars most evenings and weekends :bang

For my company car program I need to officially have 4 doors, be less than 4 years old and have no more than 100,000km on the ODO. My fit is an 09 so I don't want anything older, but I am having a hard time finding something under $20,000 that could stack up similarly to some of the Rx8 R3's I've seen for sale on line.

Anyone have an RX8, is it at all possible to get better than 12l per 100? Looking on Fuelly.com it appears that 14 is the norm which is more than double my fit not including premium. with gas prices going the way they are going this is my biggest concern as i commute 60km to and from work several days a week. can't think of anything else that meets the company criteria and doesn't cost a fortune though, any thoughts or suggestions?

Have you given any thought to a used Mazda5? I know it's classified a mini van, but my niece picked one up and the friggen thing feels faster then my car lol, it's also a 5 speed standard. Handles real nice and she claims she's averaging 8.5l/100km...not bad. Same underpinings as the 3.

Just a thought...

Uhm...speed 3?

Had one before.... 2010 ms3 costs more than a 2010 RX8 R3 but it is practical, better on gas. good option though

...don't forget the oil you have to top up every other tank of gas.

kidding - somewhat - aside, the R3 is an amazing handling machine....not sure how practical it would be on a daily commute.

I used to have a RX8 and my gas consumption was horrible which was one of the main reason I got rid of it. My communte was almost 100% city driving and when I drove it hard, I was only able to get about 250kms to the 60L tank. After that stint, I shifted at 4k rpm and revved it occasionally to redline and was getting about 350kms to the tank. I took it for trips to the states and got about 450kms to the tank on highway driving.

So if gas is your concern, you might want to consider another car.

Infiniti G37/35 maybe? Might be a little pricey. Or a Jetta/Golf 2.0T?

Mustang. Don't knock it till you actually drive one. If you can squeeze a 2011 GT into your budget, go that way, if not, the 2010 is nice too

My bad. Missed that.
You can tune a RX8 for better mileage.

See thats what scares me, I am getting 650km on 40l of regular gas at the moment, 450 would be a bit of a shock.

Wish I could actually suggest you a vehicle but given what you've stated your searches are gonna be really narrow. :s

How much better?

Depends on how you drive and how much time you put into logs and tuning.

i drive 90% hwy on cruise between 107-110km and get better than avg economy... what is the theoretical best case MPG for the rx8 after tuning?

You could easily be doing 500/tank

RX-8 and MPG efficiency don't go hand in hand. They are a better 2nd/weekend car and the wankel is a very particular motor one I wouldn't trust to get me to work and back. Buy a 4-door civic SI, MS3, WRX, Lancer etc for a bit more fun without the huge hit to the wallet at the pumps...How about a Saab 9-5 Aero Wagon, BMW 330i ZHP, BMW 335, G37s Sedan...

Look around, but the RX-8 isn't your answer.

Been in your situation before.. I was gonna go buy an RX8 instead of the speed. Been liking how it looks and stuff. Read up on it (lots and lots of reading), test drove a couple, absolutely loved the car. Although, the negative side is that it lacks pull, gas consumption, oil consumption and a few other things (engine rebuild, etc). Don't get me wrong, it's an amazing car and all, it's just that the negatives out-weigh the positives. Not at all recommended for daily driving. Well, this all my opinion so it's all gonna be up to you to decide. :)

I think i've officially written off the RX8 idea, amazing car with non liveable MPG for a DD. A V10 BMW M5 gets better economy lol. Checking into some of those options you mentioned, anyone know how the reliability is on a 08 BMW 335? MSN reliability shows engine issues for that year, but they don't let you know which engine it is that has the problems. Could be one of two NA engines, the turbo engine or the M3 engine

From what I've heard they have HPFP issues. Maybe MacGuyver can chime in since he works at BMW. My brother was looking to get one but settled for a G37X sedan instead.

Hmm please do, as something like http://www.autotrader.ca/a/BMW/3%20Series/MISSISSAUGA/Ontario/5_14003020_ON20071217112854656/ seems attractive if there are no major problems with the car/engine

i been looking into some 08-09 335 coupes and the main problem was the HPFP failure. But with the warranty, it really isnt a big issue as they have corrected the issue on the newer units.

As long as you have warranty, and the HPFP is replaced, there really isnt any major concern.

drove the 335i and rx8 r3 today. the bmw is like a grown up MS3 with less head room and what sounds like spotty reliability. because of the kinked neck issues i had with my acura from tilting my head all the time it's sadly out. beautiful car, nearly perfect in every other way

rx8 i liked more than i thought i would. it sounds great, and the shifter is excellent. not that fast, but seemed fun.... such a same about the mpg as otherwise it seems pretty rocking. guess i have to stay within the hatchback crowd or look at a larger sedan at the cost of worse driving feel

I would take a 335i over a RX8 or even a MS3 anyday.
Like Thanu said, just be aware of the fuel pump issue on the 335i.

6'3 ish... apparently i have a tall torso, i don't find in many large cars including the CTS, 300c SRT8.

In budget range that meet the 4 door, less than 4 years old (prefer 2010+), less than 150km, seat 4 adults and preferably under 25k not leaving a lot of options outside of what i have already. basically a second hand GTI, or MS3 are the only sporty fun cars i fit in unless i look at something more mundane like a tsx

out of budget.... m5 :chuckle
