I have 2 threaded plastic fittings that are leaking. The one is part of the water softener, the other is the part that connects to the wall. The threads are where the leak is coming from....

I've tried teflon tape, I've tried this: http://www.homedepot.ca/product/pro-dope-pipe-thread-sealant-250ml/959661

Am I just not tightening it enough? I'm afraid to crack the plastic.

How old are the plastic fittings? They can crack with age, else try adding a washer in addition to using the teflon and tighten incrementally. If they still leak you can replace with compression fittings, also add an upstream shutoff valve when you are replacing.

Replace the fitting. Should be easy enough if it's what I think your talking about.

I don't think your supposed to use Teflon tape in PVC.

If dope doesn't work they you will have to replace the fittings. As was already pointed out it is likely something is cracked. If you post up a picture we can probably give you better suggestions though.......

It's the fitting for the bypass valve on a BRAND NEW water softener. The piece it connects to was something very similar to this: http://www.homedepot.ca/product/1-in-pvc-schedule-40-coupling-fipt/970044
I can try replacing that one, but I'm not sure if I can get the part for the water softener.
