Sooooo

While on vacation in Punta Cana, I decided that my iphone 4S needed to learn how to swim in the pool. :bang.
SO when I got back from holidays, I've put it in rice and so far no avail.
So as much as I would like to get another 4S 32gb, the asking prices on kijiji and redflag do not make it worth it at this point in time.
My options are to try and see if the phone can be fixed BUT b/c the pool water is salt water based, I've heard its basically toast.
I'm looking to spend max $300.

Yes. It's $169 for a 4, I did it a month ago. $199 for a 4S, I believe.

Is the $199 for the 16gb? Mine was a 32gb.

And since its thru an Apple store, are they unlocked?

Well if you wait until June 10-11, Apple should be announcing the next iPhone. Prices might drop.

I saw 2 products out there that will make your phone water resistant.

1. Liquidpel - an invisible barrier, most likely done at the manufacturing level. They dropped an iPhone and Galaxy S2 with open battery cover into water and it works fine.

2. Not sure what it was called. Basically it's a condom for your phone. It's very thin and designed for a specific phone. You wrap your device and somehow it doesn't let water in. You can put it in a normal case. they said it was good for 10m or so.

I don't think either one is released yet, but hopefully soon.

If it doesn't turn on. Don't say anything. If your under warranty it will be free.

water damage isn't covered by warranty unless you have AppleCare+ where there is some sort of incidental replacement coverage. inside the phone there is a water sensor that changes colour if it gets wet, the repair people will know what happened

Get the moisture packs that come in shoes, shipping materials and add that to the rice. put it in the oven with just the light on and try to turn it on after 3 days

It is $199 for a 4S 32GB, had a problem with mine? Replaced for free, but this was the email sent afterwards.

So there you go, do the apple store. Make a genius bar appointment, and hopefully it takes you about 5 minutes like mine did. Back up to the cloud before going in though. Makes it way easier after you get the new phone.

Like Uou said, all they have to do is open it up and check the water sensor to see if it was affected. I'm not out to get a free phone. I've got no issues telling them there is water damage.I just want to know if Apple will sell me a refurb unit.

If its still covered under warranty and can't fix within 10 min. They replace. I was told they do not open it.

It could be the " genius " wasn't a genius at all. Just going off what I was told.

Either way my phone is a 4 and is 159. All you need is your broken phone. I didn't need any receipts or anything.Keep in mind that you can purchase apple care for a refurb.

Does your phone work at all though.( turn on) you can leave it in the sun for a while. That helped me once. Later It swam in beer and after doing an ipad file hack ( it always thought the phone was on a dock. ) it worked. I downloaded a hacked file and installed it. Worked fine ever sine. Even after updates.

Put the phone in a ziploc bag filled with rice. Seal it. Wait a few days. Open bag!

I am under warranty, if yours is a 4s, there is no way its out of warranty yet, and wet phone I think just means you can buy a new one for cheap. my phone has been fine since I replaced it, even if it was a refurb phone. Don't think it was, nice shiny plastic was all over that thing.

If you look up the serial numbers for apple there is a difference between the first few digits. It will tell you if it is a refurb or not. Plus the box it comes in USUALLY says it.

Rick@garage16 had an issue with an iPad and another member had mentioned the serial numbers.

According the Apple site, you will be covered under their 'Out of Warranty' policy which covers liquid damage...so you'll have to pay the flat rate repair fee but you will receive a refurb unit. All of the info you need is here: http://support.apple.com/kb/index?page=servicefaq&geo=Canada&product=iphone

If you end up having to switch it, I'd go with the Bold 9900...I have it and love it.

If nothing can be done at the Apple store, the 9900 is my first choice.

Best of luck at the Apple store, but if that doesn't work out and you end up with the Bold, buy an Otter Box for it. It's a 60 dollar investment that will keep your phone in perfect shape. I've dropped mine, got it wet, got sand in it, it still works and looks out of the box. I went all out and got "The Defender," but they have cheaper ones (40-50 bucks) that also work almost as well and are more practical.
