Hey everyone! So i am planning a surprise trip for my girl friends birthday and i am taking her to Boston. We have been before and she loved it there so i thought it would be a good idea to take her again. Last time we only got to stay for the day so this time im planning a few days down.

I need some help finding some ideas of what to do though. I have googled it but most sites lack personal experience so i thought some of you might have some ideas! I was thinking blueman group would be a cool show to go see and of course shopping. Cant say im a huge baseball fan but i hear the games are fun to go to anyway. so im pretty open to any ideas really!

Thanks!

When I went there they have this tour where you sat in an army vehicle that was able to drive on land and water, and didn't look half as gay as the Toronto hippo tours.

That's the best I can describe it lol

Make sure you have a really good GPS because navigating Boston roads could be a nightmare. Boston downtown and the harbour area is connected to a series of islands via bridges and tunnels, plus the city highways are built and layered upon one another and since most GPSs cannot distinguished altitude you can easily take the wrong turn or lane. I just returned a few weeks ago, travelled with 2 GPS and even then got lost many times, lol.

Depending on what you like to do, shop, sightsee or play the tourist: Fenway park, Freedom Trail, Faneuil Hall/ Quincy Market, Boston Commons, Museum of Fine Arts, Museum of Science, TD Bank Garden, Theatre District, Aquarium, Chinatown, Harvard and MIT campuses are all attractions.

Daytime downtown parking could be very hard to find or else expensive, check out this site for discount parking coupons ;)

^^^^ THIS is key. DRIVE SLOW otherwise you will end up in mad circles. Transit is actually quite nice and clean.

Eat lobster, lots.

If you have time, I hear Cape Cod is nice. I've only been in Boston for a day at a time as well for work.

Hotel wise I used Priceline and scored a really sweet deal, Cambridge Marriott for $75 a night! 4 star hotel!!

The public transit is really good there.

If you want a nice eats go to Ten Tables in Jamaica Plain. SO AMAZING.
New England Aquarium is pretty sick.
So many good breweries, if you enjoy beer head to Sam Adams or Harpoon breweries, both have free tastings/tours.
Improv Asylum in the North end is a hoot. Go get some food (anywhere really around there) see the show and hit up Mikes pastry for a famous Canoli.
Boston Museum of science was pretty decent to boot.

And honestly, parking there is astronomical. Just take the train. So cheap and easy for the most part.

BEST CITY EVERY!!!!!!!!!!!

do everything that in the second post...and HARVARD!! Right by Harvard there is a restautant called Mr. Bartley's Burgers *drroooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool** best burger I've ever had, with the best sauteed onions!!

Sam LaGrassa's "the best sandwhiches in the world" and more diners featured on Diner's Drive in and Dives LOOK THEM UP!

AND the actual CHEERS set (TV show if your not familliar)

Also, do a movie tour if they are still available, and ABSOLUTELY sign up for the trolley tours, they are the perfect means of transportation and they bring you right down every road you need to know, they'll show you Tom Brady's house!

Look for Acorn street, cute little street, nice for pictures, also someone famous lives in there, but I cant remember who at the moment.

I went to Boston 2010 and 2011 and now Im going to Cape Cod in 2012...with a visit to Boston and its restaurants on the way down!!!! I love that city

DO A FENWAY PARK TOUR, amazing history! and Visit Newberry St. and take the GF shopping!! :D My God I know everything about this city.

You can walk from one side of the city to the complete other in about an hour.

In addition to the many above mentioned sites etc; If your into history check out the USS Constitution docked there and the Tea party ship. Right next to the tea party ship is a restaurant, can't remember the name, but it serves the best Clam Chowder around!

Was actually thinking of visiting Boston perhaps this year too, so bunch of good tips from everybody, thanks! :) (and of course, thanks Kappa for starting the thread!)

As an aside, if we fly there, is renting a car really necessary? Or can get to everything pretty easily via transit/walking? We might be staying at a friend's in Cambridge if that helps..

dont rent a car. subway pass is stupid cheap and its one train N and S - E and W so easy to navigate! Also once your in downtown Boston everything is accessable on foot and like I said earlier you can reach Fenway to the Harbour in an hour on foot!

Parking is cheap down there also, about 5$ for 5 hours or something like that, from what I remember, when I went last yr with my gf we stayed at the Park Plaza Hotel, Flight, trolly tours and paid $7XX for 5days.

Also, for all memeber interested in Boston, there is an Irish Pub on the back side of the Park Plaza Hotel, the name excapes me now but its M.C something....I'll post when I remember, great fish and chips there and great service, highly recommended!
