Hey everyone,

I just did a search across the world wide web, and it appears the ONLY short shifter for the 2010 MazdaSpeed 3 is from TWM.

I heard mention on here of one from Cobb as well (adjustable?) but on their website there is no mention of it...

From reading various other forums it appears that you need a full conversion kit for the Gen2's, and it's not just a simple change in height of the original shifter too.

Can anyone clear this up for me, and perhaps point me to the direction of any other brands of short shifters (Cash is a little tight, and $500 for a short shifter is a bit outta budget)

Thanks!

Also as a side note as I cannot post a WTB yet, but if anyone has a short shifter for sale.... PM me as well

the mazdaspeed has an option of full shifter replacement which will change and adjust hight and throw, or a shifter plate that will adjust throw. you can get a shorter knob which will make it not as tall as well. you can also purchase counter weights. take a visit to the Twm performance site

counter weight- http://www.twmperformance.com/shortshifters/mazdashortshifters/mazdaspeed3counterweight.htm

shifter plate - http://www.twmperformance.com/shortshifters/mazdashortshifters/2010mazdaspeed3shortshifters.htm

and james barone also has some stuff - http://www.jamesbaroneracing.com/store/

I've been thinking of developing a short shifter plate for the gen2 MZ3/MS3 that will be available locally. It's not a full shifter replacement like the TWM one, but it will also be considerably cheaper. Just need to find some time to get started and design the prototype

How are the installs between mz3/ms3 any different?

TWM is overpriced IMO. E4P makes a good one for the 1st gen though. You could always just go short shift plate from JBR, It's cheap and shortens throw as much as a short shifter.

Heard the COBB have a lot of problems but you'd have to look into it.

Cobb one is blech. Skip it and get something else, especially if you need to 'convert' things.

@Terapr0 Don't forget that you will probably need a smaller shift weight for that shifter plate (I think).

I would go with a short shift plate, it's cheap, effective, very easy to install/remove and keeps the stock shifter height. The stock shift throw length is reduced by 40%, it's such a big difference that I think this car should have come from the factory like this. *note* you will need dielectric grease (white lithium grease) underneath the ball joint or it'll feel notchy and grindy.

Thanks for all the replies so far,

I am also of the mind that the TWM replacement shifter is just way too expensive, maybe I'm just being a woman about it.

Really looking for the shorter shifter itself, I find it sits really high and is not comfortable to shift (not near as bad as my first cars, Ford Contour & Mercury Mystique)

Out of curiosity, why isn't it possible to just shorten the physical length that is there, and just re-thread the top for the knob?

I guess I'll end up getting a shift plate in the interim, but would really love the shortenet shifter too... without dropping $500+

Ive seen it done a few times on a couple Hondas.. Hack saw+threading tool. You will reduce throw distance a little..but the shift pivot (the little "knob" the the shifter moves around on) and the arms the the shift cables (? Don't know proper terminology lol..) will not change - Which is why it won't be a "true" short shifter.

*arms that the shift cables connect to

Sorry for typos and double post.. can't edit.

Will never post from an iPad again!

My buddy did the whole hacksaw thing. Its definitely not hard to do but I don't thing it shortens the throw much. Not sure tbh.

Not really thinking along the lines of a hacksaw.

Just wish the transmission was able to accept a shortened shift rod like the earlier generation... just drop it in and away you go.

I'm sure if it was possible, someone with the knowledge to create such a part would make a pretty steady business.

looking for a short shifter as well ... from the reviews I'll probably be picking up a twm. my question is this - is the full replacement worth the extra spend, or should I just opt for the basic kit?

Pulling up an old thread here, thinking about purchasing a CorkSport short shifter for my 2012 skyactiv. Anyone have this installed? Or is TWM much better?
