Just wondering if anyone has gone off on there own and installed prokits themselves. Just looking for the experience of installing them. They will be going on a 2011 mz3. Thinking of doing them next week and if anyone one had any past experience with this much help would be appreciated. I live in the kitchener/cambridge area. Thanks!

Hey man, I've done spring installs just short of 10 times now. In Guelph. Also walked a few of the KW guys through their own installs.

Here's my advice, don't.
Reinstalling stock parts is not worth your time.

HUH?

Getting the stock strut back in to the arm is such a pain.
Yes it was much easier for me the second time, but that was after much trial and error.
I'd do them again, but for the right price.
Coilovers or aftermarket struts, I'd do in an instant, I'm just not a fan of how wide the strut is on the stock.

Meh. Still not that hard. Not sure what you were doing, but I've never had an issue.

Well I found this walkthough and it seems to be what I am looking for. http://krystmsgarage.com/?p=148
I have every tuesday off so I will be likely doing it then. But if you have done it that many times I wouldn't mind some help :)

Meh. Still not that hard. Not sure what you were doing, but I've never had an issue.

The strut won't go into the arm without the force of a jack, it's too wide to do it by hand, and you have to make sure the j hook at the back lines up with the hole for the 17 mm bolt.

It's not that hard, now that I know what I'm doing, it's just a pain.

Oh, you don't have a jack to do it?

I have the jack, but it may take 3-5 tries to line up the hook with the slot it's supposed to go in, and every time you get it wrong, you pretty much need to bang the strut out. It's a small slot that doesn't have much play on both sides.

Since my first time, I've learned to sand down the strut just a bit so that it can slide it much easier, with a lot of lube.

Basically what I'm saying for him is, if you have the tools, and the know how, go for it, but if you're doing it just once in your life, it may not be worth the time.

its not that hard.if you have the time, patience, tools and know how like hyperion said, its easy. I've done it i think 5 times now.

here's a trick for the strut going into the hole properly.

before putting the new one in. put the bolt in the other side and put a quarter in there as you're tightening it. it will spread the gap and make it looser for the strut to go into. I've done this a few times and it works like a charm. except last week when i changed mine. they did not want to go in all the way(was missing maybe half a mm) and what i ended up doing was bolting everything back in and put the car down. the weight of the car put it in all the way. then i put the bolt back in.

Gab mind your business. There are more to things behind the scene than you think you know.

Adam is a mechanic and is offering assistance. That is all.

Im pretty sure every active member knows he's a mechanic. but that's not my point. my point is exactly what i said before.

so what you're saying is as long as my trade is the assistance im offering then i can charge for them right? ill keep that in mind

No Gab, that's not what I'm saying.

Someone doing any work for "free" doesn't concern us at all. Someone using TM3 as an advertising ground as well as using it's members to make money when we have paying sponsors does. Please see the difference. You misinterpreted what I said and you are getting defensive about it.

Ultimately anyone making money off of TM3s members for service or parts without being a sponsor through this forum will be questioned. That is just how we operate.

I'm not defensive. I'm trying to prove my point and you just proved it more. im not sure what "free' means to you but he posted for a "small fee" thats not free if you ask me. free is me doing it for nothing at all. and "doing it for a small fee" is also not helping someone to do it in my opinion.

I read it wrong. I thought it said "free" I was on my phone before.

We are on the same page but I misread it. Either way you just shit disturb.

We shall discuss this matter amongst the mods. Thank you for bringing it to our attention.

Sounds good. Tell your dad to sign up as a member, develop a reputation, and charge say $50 to install springs. I am sure he will jump at the opportunity.

Installed them by myself last tuesday. Yeah if it is the first time doing something like that it will take awhile. However I could probably do it in half the time if i were to do it again.

Indeed. If you go to partsource you can rent the compressor for free :) you just have to put down a deposit.
