So I got a check engine driving home today, Pulled 4 codes -

P2097-TARGET AFR TOO RICH
P2177-FUEL SYSTEM TO LEAN
P2195-FRONT H02S SIGNAL STUCK AT LEAN
P2187-FUEL SYSTEM TO LEAN AT IDLE

I left the car running as I went inside to grab my code reader, when back outside and the exhaust was smoking, looked blueish in color, stunk!

Anybody know what this could be? Bad to drive?

Car is a 09, only have a test pipe/sri with 73000km. I just changed my plugs last weekend.

Any help would be much appreciated.

BAD! Do NOT drive the car. Blue smoke is indication of burning oil.

Is it that bad? Can I drive it to the dealership, approx 40km? What kind of damage will it do?

Well I'm not completely familiar with speed3 and corresponding codes, but if I would have to guess, something along the lines of blew a piston ring, blew the turbo, etc etc (read: I would recommend towing it).

Here you go sir.. Looks like a crapped out o2 sensor...

EDIT:

Looks like there's a TSB for it as well.

Thanks rzapata,
I was just reading that thread, Seems like it might be the issue (fingers crossed), Only thing is everybody who has that issue doesnt seem to mention the exhaust smoking at idle.... I REALLY hope its related.

Too many variables to rule it out. The smoke could just be the turbo not draining the oil properly. Could be a related issue, could be separate, I can't say for sure. As you already know, our cars are well known for smokey turbo.

When was the last time you changed the oil and what type of oil? Did you check your oil levels as well?

I changed the oil about a week ago, used 5w30 (quaker state synthetic),
Ive read countless threads on our famous smokey turbo (Tks Mazda) I twas under the assumption the smokey turbo was mostly the 07- early 08 models? I have a 09.

That's what I thought too.. Now it makes me wonder if I'll be seeing that puffing exhaust too. We practically have the same car less the test pipe.

Just throwing it out there, have you done a compression test lately? You know how cylinder 3 is..

Just toss some gas on the car and throw a match at it and call it a day bro. :complain

From what I have read, 5w-30 oil is not a great choice for your car. Shell Rotella T6 5w-40 seems to be very well liked.

Here is some very useful info if you haven't read it already:

Sure you can change to a thicker oil, although that's more like a temporary fix. May or may not come back. Better to get down to the root cause.

^^ I definitely agree that the problem needs to be fixed by finding out what's causing it, not by covering it up. I was just suggesting a better oil since it may help reduce his oil consumption in general as well as decrease internal component wear.

Dude,

The best thing you can do is contact Dave aka Bluestreak or Paul aka Celesteblue of Mspeedtuning and see if they can diagnose the problem with your car. People who try to help you and don't even own a speed is like playing russian roulete.

When I had my smoking turbo issue, I didn't get any CEL. Although it might differ from car to car. I would do what Fack_Dude suggested. Also I don't recommend driving it at all.

I got to agree with fack_dude and turok here.. I should have said that in the beginning (contact MSpeed). Although, Montreal is a bit on the farther east.. Unless they can diagnose it remotely... Good luck!

:welcome smiley

Anyway, my logic is this:
carbon3 to dealer... 40km
carbon3 to mspeed... 550km

worst case call CAA and have it towed to dealer. you have CAA right? :)
if the car is still under warranty I'd take it in.. get on those TSBs

I drove the car today, It drove smooth for the most part but did have some hesitation and bogging action,The car is parked till monday, dealer is gonna take a look, I asked how much a new o2 sensor would be (incase that is the issue) 470$ with tax, plus installation.

Little update,

Brought the car to Mazda, turns out it is indeed o2 sensor, Its by no means a cheap fix, The service tech said its a very common problem on the 2.3 turbo, just a matter of time.

Thanks for the help guys!

Did they say anything about the smoky stuff or is it interrelated with the O2 sensor?

Hows your fuel pump holding up?

carbon3
07-10-2012, 05:22 PM
Yeah, the smoking exhaust was from the 02 sensor throwing the fuel trims off.

Fuel pump is fine, never comes close to dropping past 1600 psi at WOT.
