Hi everyone,

I would like to know if anyone has ever rented a speed boat for Lake Ontario usage before (besides Harbourfront rental service).

I tried looking, but there does not seem to be many. I am looking for place / person that rents a boat for a few hours where they allow you to drive the boat (do not want one where a captain / skipper is provided).

Any help is greatly appreciated!

If you don't have any experience then you cannot rent the bigger more powerful ones. You may only be eligible for the smaller power boats.

Check it out though

Thanks guys. I saw this prior. For the Groupon deal, it is the small power boat and is limited to 11 KM/H. No fun at all lol.

I wanted to see if there were any other options besides Harbourfront. Perhaps a Marina or something similar.

For a true speed boat, Marina's are not likely to have them as a rental. If you want something with 50-130hp, you are looking at $250 for two hours plus a $1000 deposit and fuel (which in some cases $300-400 to fill up). You will also need to have Pleasure Craft Operators card.

Unfortunately, you're pretty much screwed for anything with any sort of power on lake Ontario. I ran a marina for 8 years and got this question on a weekly basis. A company tried to do it in 2002 using 30 foot Checkmate offshores, however the amount of damage done to the boats, the lack of operator training, the numerous search and rescue calls and ridiculously high insurance costs shut them down after half a season or so.

As well, a minor wind changes on lake ontario and some other large lakes can create a huge change in the amount of chop on the lake. A stiff wind coming out of the east creates an absolute beast of a swell (5-6ft) from toronto to hamilton and unless you have experience with the vessel you are in control of in that kind of weather you will be in over your head.

This all being said, I still do boat pick ups and deliveries on the side for a few of my old customers. An extra hand or two on board never hurts if you're interested in spending a day on the water.
