Hi I was wondering if using 89 octane gas grade will damage my mazda3 2008 auto engine? I consume more gas everyday and looking for some cheap alternative to 91 grade gas octane.

putting in 89 or 91 is a waste. The manual calls fir 87, stick with that.

Hi thanks sfw you mean I can use as low as 87 for my mazda3 2008 auto sedan? I just read the manual and this is what they said:
"Fuel with a rating lower than 87 octane (91 ron) could cause the emission control system to lose effectiveness. It could also cause engine knocking and serious engine damage."
87 octane, like he just said and as you just quoted from the manual
Anything lower than 87 octane you would have to had mixed it yourself with regular gas and listerine

wait.... why r you putting anything else but 87.... you have a regular 3. unless your running a turbo or a tune, you shouldnt be putting anything else in... leave the higher octane to the speed guys and just run 87.

And if you read your quote from the manual...it says EXACTLY that. ie, if you were using gas rated 86 octane and lower....THEN you would have trouble...I've always ran 87 in my rides and never had any trouble with it. I did however run a full tank of super 91 unleaded once. I was at a shell station once and they actually ran outa reg 87. So a sign on the pump said "Sorry but 87 gasoline is temporarily sold out 91 octane is available @ the 87 price. Sorry for the inconvenience"
Made my day since @ the time, reg 87 around 1.30 and super like 1.50 ish and my ride smiled all the way through that tank :huge smile

I was using 91 grade gas all this time and dammit I have spend almost $100++ per month for that gasoline!!! ok here is one more noob question for you guys since I have like 11 liters of 91 grade gas left on my gas tank is it ok if I mixed it with an 87 grade gas the next time I load? was it bad or no problem at all? thanks.

lol... $100+++ a month!!! you should drive a MS3 for a month then you will love the fuel mileage you're getting :P Put what the engine is specified for, the engine is engineered to handle the characteristics of 87 octane fuel. You can get better mileage with the higher octane but costs out weigh the benefits. You would have to be getting 60+kms a tank with premium vs regular to see any savings.

Yeah, I wish I spent anything close to $100/mo on gas. 94 octane is a bitch! $80/tank.. 1.5 tanks a week... fak.

lol yeah i've heard the stories...i guess thats the price u guys gotta pay for speed :P Anyway, I spend way more than $100 a month on gas...$50 a fuel-up lasts me 1 working week (i do about 100km a day) so I spend about $200/month on gas :(

I take offense to the gas stations labelling their higher octane fuel as premium and charging more for it, knowing as I do that they simply mix the gas with ethanol to achieve higher octane ratings, and ethanol has less energy content than gasoline.
So not only do you pay more for 'premium' fuel, you get less energy (but more knock protection).

i know that 91 octane gas has a little to no ethanol in it. 94 octane is achieved by adding ethanol. 87 and 89 both use ethanol, no more then 10% tho.

if I spent $100/month on gas, I'd feel like I won the lottery. $100/week is more like it :(

I spend $70/month in gas :P
Living 6km away from school FTW.
these threads always turn into a "how much gas do you use" thread
it's like dick measuring. Can I say dick without it being sensored?
edit: the answer is yes

So if you spend more gas do you have a bigger or smaller dick?

that's a very good question
but I was spending between $800 to $1200 per month on gas last summer...

This thread makes my brain hurt. And that was just the first few posts.
Think the question has been answered.

20 cents/liter sounds good...
but the prob is.. i dunno if they will sponsor a car forum that has cars that don't use 94ultra. Since us normal Mazda3 people.. we don't use 94 ultra.
I have a regular Mazda 3 2.3L and I swear by 94 too. It's great!

The sponsorship helps all, as the gas discount cards, are not just for U94, but any fuel.

why not? Seems to run better with it than regular...or 91 for that matter and I have noticed better fuel economy with it.
I am still a noob with cars, so I mean I feel like there is a difference, but maybe someone can explain to me why it is pointless? What if I had a better intake?

Hey guys don't we think its a bad idea to discourage use of a product we're trying to get sponsored by in the thread which is dedicated to getting sponsored?

your car is tuned for 87 octane. the computer is making changes and doing all kinds of stuff just to deal with the extra octane you gave it, your computer expects 87 and gets 94 and has to make all those changes in milliseconds while you are going "OH YAH! MORE POWER FOR SURE!" your car is saying "MAN I TAKE 87! YOU KNOW THIS"
you said " i am still a noob with cars" just listen, save your money, fill it up with 87, and buy yourself a treat for being smart and letting the guys on the forum save you some money.
however, if you wanna fill up with 94 because your noob self thinks you get better milage or better performance, go ahead! wont hurt, but wont help.
do whatever you want! tis your car!
