View Full Version : Rattling at rear window
Just wondering if anyone else is having issues with rattling at the rear window were the plastic is? mine started about a month ago and it's driving me nuts. I was thinking of taking it apart to put some dymate to hopefully stop it from rattling unless someone else has a better solution.
The rattle is coming from these plastic pieces

I have an identical random noise in the back window - i haven't been able to determine what's causing it...
I'll probably have to end up tearing out the whole back window portion to find a loose clip or seat-belt ....
Good luck - hopefully someone will post something more constructive, other than "yeah i'm experiencing this too." :P
Lol.... I'll take mine a part soon and see what's going on... Hopefully I find it

If you take yours apart first - would surely appreciate any pics. The only thing I'd be afraid of is finding nothing out of place...... Pack it all with newspaper/dynamat.

I encountered the same problem when I installed my stereo, the plastic cowl thing rattling/vibrating whenever I get a particularly deep base hit.
I haven't done this yet, so I cannot comment on the efficacy, but someone on the forum here, or on OMC, suggested that I take the cowl off and line the edges with weather stripping from Home Depot.
It should, in theory, stop the plastic from rattling against the window / other plastic trim.

Are your OEM jack and tire iron properly secured? What about the bolts and plate for your spare tire? Any of those could be loose and jiggling around producing a rattling noise.

good point, could be noise from other items unless there is someone back there that can hear it from that side / location. make sure theres nothing in the car or under seats making noise or making noise in the trunk as well.

I almost forgot, definitely check out the white plastic cover on the light in the trunk. That damn thing was causing about 70% of the rattle noise I was hearing from my trunk.

It my be the trunk hinges.... Spray some lube on the hinges and it should solve the problem.

I dont know if you drive a sedan or hatch. But i was having some rattling and deduced that it was coming from my spoiler mounting bolt. I drive a hatch.

Ya, but my spoiler had noticeable movement when I shook it. It might not hurt to check and see if they're tight though.

Just tightened down the mounting bolt for the spoiler. If you open the hatch, on the top left and right of the door you'll see two black plugs. Just take those off and the nut is right underneath them. You'll need a ratchet extension to reach them.

I have a hatch, and fixed my rattling problem a long time ago by opening trunk and stuffing some foam under the cover that meets up with the back window. Rattling wasn't bad until I installed my rear motor mount.

Noticed it happens for the first while while the car is cold, then when she warms up it disappears. Also comes from front window too sounds like cracking??

My spoiler rattles with my subs, but i just tightened it down.
Now there's a constant rattle when i'm driving coming from up front, any ideas? I've already cleaned out my glovebox and tightened everything in my dash.

Front rattling has been linked to the cowl below the wipers. Happens often when it's cold. There is a TSB for this for the gen 1s not sure about gen 2s.

I've checked everything in the rear hatch and can't seem to source the rattle. I've removed the spare, Bose unit, jack, license frame and plate, buckled rear seat belts and removed the privacy cover, going for a test drive after each removal, trying to isolate the noise. The rattle is still there! I've also added foam to a few pieces in the spare tire well. I'm stumped! I've heard the spoiler, hatch alignment and hinges are sometimes to blame. I have a 120,000 extended warranty on my 2010 stock speed3. This better be covered, its VERY apparent now, and driving me crazy. Perhaps Booter22 could chime in with an opinion?
Anybody have any additional ideas?

We had a rattle on my gfs hatch. I put some foam tape along the line where the privacy cover rests and havent heard the noise since. in really cold temps like the last few days my sedan has a creeking noise from the back. Sounds like glass area. But if I was operating in 20 below id be creeking too.

I have the rattle when the cover is completely removed, and I have added adhesive foam to a few extra places in the rear hatch and spare tire well. It defiantly sounds like its coming from the hatch door. Also very important to note that this has been happening since early August while my OD read 58,000km! Either way, I'm pretty darn disappointed with the interior quality of the 3. Thoughts on a dealership fixing the issue under my 72/120,000km Mazda Added Protection plan?

That's the ice build up on the rear window. Clear it off and you won't hear it anymore.

Just got off of the phone with a Service Rep at Forbes Mazda in Waterloo. I got the run-around and was told the rattle would need to be "inspected", at which point they would determine if the warranty covers the issue. If not, I would have to pay for they're "inspection". Hmmm. I'll be contacting the Service Manager and will keep everybody posted.

then you should have taken it in to be inspected in august vs waiting until january.. :S not going to be as easy to determine now with the super cold temps and im sure ( hate to say it ) but if they dont find anything now they may just say it is related and ask you to come back when its warmer. mind you if you are still under warranty and it is a warranty issure it would cover the repair and inspection or diag. what they are saying, and they are right. if it is not warranty, something wear and tear or damage by other means then you would be responsible to pay for the diagnostic / repair. no need to call the manager, thats the way it is and works everywhere. cant expect them to look at it / fix it for free if its not warranty, or if you are out of basic 3 year 80,000 km and these parts or items are not covered by the extended plan.
just make sure to ask prior to inspection, if they find nothing if you are paying for diagnostic. because that i think shouldnt be charged. jwoods_24

I may have missed that when outlining the situation, but I addressed my concern on my first visit after deciding to service my car at Forbes. My concern was dismissed and then decide to investigate the rattle myself. This is when I removed the spare, Bose unit, jack, license frame and plate, yadayadayada, in an attempt to isolate the noise. I suppose I'm just irritated with the way my situation was(not) addressed.
Either way, its obviously a concern in the Mazda3 community and a flaw in the hatch design. I've since received a response from the Service Manager.

Well, not sure if this is gonna help you much or not, but from back in the day with my other cars, I've come across some noise related to the latching mechanism too ... mostly cause I would have a system in said car and the pressure pushing on the trunk or hatch (depending on car at the time).
What I'd also try (if I was you) is to maybe take some electrical tape (atleast that's what I used) and put a couple of layers on the part of the latch mechanism that looks like a square hoop (sorry, can't think of the technical term for it right now).
Sometimes you need more than 2 layers ... gotta play with it to figure out what's the right thickness for the full latch mechanism to be snug.
But remember, you don't wanna make it too thick, cause then the trunk won't latch fully and well, shit will open up when you're driving and all. lol.
Its a simple yet very effective trick I use when chasing rattles\noises after a system upgrade and dynamatting stuff up.

Oh, I don't know if the non-MS3 hatch spoiler has the same issue or not, but what I had to do on mine was remove the spoiler, put some sound deadener in specific spots to build up the contact areas of the hatch and the spoiler ... then bolt it up again, it aided in the pressure and contact area between the 2 pieces. Oh, and don't go all ape-shit on those nuts for the spoiler, they're small and just need to be snug, or else you'll snap em.
All this is best attempted in much warmer weather tho.

.. if it was such an obvious issue. there would be more complaints about it or a TSB about it, trust me in almost 5 years with mazda, we dont have a huge outbreak of customers coming in for rear end rattles. only thing is to get it in and have everything taken apart. strange enough, we had a customer with a noise in the rear and to my memory it was the fuel door cable had some slack at different points and would rattle which would echo in the car. we ended up putting some tape to hold it in place and the noise was gone. might be something to try and check.
keep the thread updated, good luck!

Yup, I had similar in my 2010 hatch. The stock felt patches came off so easily. I used the adhesive felt that's used for bottom of table and chair legs.

So I took my car back to the dealership to deal with the same issue and I was told that it was plastic window spacers used on the rear windshield. They took them out and after awhile it was making the same noise. The problem is that it seems to get worse when its cold and when I was able to take the car back it was warm and the car wasn't doing it at that point and they said to bring it back when I notice it. The problem is that it doesn't do it all the time and the damn dealership is all the way across the city. Very frustrated!

I have the same issue with mine.. I brought it into the dealer and they have to replace the seal and clips to fix it... (Still not done.. I am bringing it back next week because the glass guy wasn't there or something? or they needed to order parts? they weren't the most informative dealership...) apparently there is a bulletin about it...
hopefully it gets rid of the noise... SO annoying!
Also a bulletin for a map interior light rattle!

if it doesnt do it during the summer then it prolly is more or less different then those that have it happen during summer months. there is no fix for cold weather noise. so if you can make the noise happen now i dont think they will apply the tsb. and take into consideration if they do complete the tsb and the noise is there still in the winter you are SOL as you cant fix "cold" noises. things will make noise that are not defects when you stick metal and rubber and stuff together outside in temps below 0

I don't know... I would've shrugged it off if it was happening all winter. It's not just a small creak that can be passed off as a "cold noise" like other cars, it's extremely loud and it started happening really late in the winter, I actually think it's related to hitting a really big pothole in Brampton because the noise started immediately after that but then it did go away when the weather got warmer. If they can't fix it, it's not a big deal, I guess I'll have to live with it even though it's really annoying lol. I guess I'll see if it comes back this winter.
