Just when my faith in today's kids have been dashed, something like this comes along:

In a nutshell, a girl ( twelve years of age ) made a pitch to her parents about getting her own car, funded by her babysitting money. Her business case was:

1. She would like to buy a fiero because she saw one at a show and thinks they are cool .
2. She makes the argument that it gets reasonably good gas mileage
3. It is relatively inexpensive, so she would be able to afford it.
4. She could completely restore it in the 4 years until she turns 16
5. She would learn about how cars work, it would be a cheap education for the money
6. She would only have the capacity to take one friend along with her, so there would be less distraction
7. She wants a manual so she would learn how to drive stick
8. When it is done it would be a cool historic sports car
9. She would pay for it all herself.

Point 6 I dont agree with, other than that this girl is awesome at 12. I wish I was like that at 12 :[ I was too busy playing my PS2/PSOne at 12

Wish she was my daughter. Sounds like she may run for Senate one day!

Geez ... she can buy a car with her baby sitting money? I can barely afford gas ... :chuckle

She'll sure learn a lot about building/fixing cars if she buys a Fiero, those things are junk... :chuckle

Good for her though, it's hard to find kids who have any motivation to take on such a big project, especially at 12.

its just a matter of time before she loses interest. this is a very inspirational story though, reminds me when i was passed a 300zx with a blown motor. really wanted to restore the thing just cause its one of my favorite cars. however... being 14 i obviously didnt have the resources to do anything to the car. it sat in our parking lot for about a year before i decided to get my parents to sell it. we got about $4000 dollars for it. 4 years later they used that money to get the mazda 3 im driving now :D

I doubt that will happen as she's been at it for ~2 years now. Currently doing an engine transplant :
"Yep, that is the new heart and soul of Kathryn's project...3.4 PR...now for some machining, a new cam, and if Kathryn has her way either a turbo or some NOS!"

Read this awhile ago on Jalop cool story.

I knew a girl whose dad bought her a fiero at 12 and all she had to do was learn to drive it when she was 16.

Instead she gained weight and didn't learn to drive until 18 and at that point she was too large to comfortably drive her free car.

Good read, thanks for the link. I wish I started that young too with open minded parents.

Cool story! I read the first few pages then went to page 18 (last page). Apparently she got a bunch of free stuff from 3M like sandpaper and a cool welding helmet.
