Just purchased a new bike recently(Giant Roam XR2), havn't picked it up yet. Been years(18yrs) since I've been really riding and I used to use those strap and toe clips(old bike-Genisis Stealth). With all the new pedals and clips what are you currently using? What do you recommend with a low to med budget? I'm sure some of our new cyclist would like to know too.

Shimano PD-M540, I think. I bought them last year; my first pair of clipless pedals. Love them! I think they were about $100. But of course, you'll need shoes too.
I bought these shoes from MEC:
http://www.mec.ca/AST/ShopMEC/Cycling/Footwear/UrbanCommuter/PRD~5028-149/lake-mx-100-cycling-shoes-mens.jsp
Since the bike I bought was a hybrid, similar to your Giant, I didn't want a pair of shoes that looked like road racing cycling shoes.
When i got my shoes and clip this year, i paid just under $300 for the basic/cheapest ones i could find in the bike shop
The Shimano pedals were about $100 bucks and basic shoes for $150ish. The Pedals were the low end and a little heavy but the tension is adjustable and the shoes are very basic heavier then the more expensive ones but you get what you pay for
Just do some walking before trying on the shoes so your feet are a little swollen (same with any shoes really), and practice clipping in and out, and if you feel there is a good chance you have to stop then clip out, I fell like that one, very embarrassing.
If you can check out Cyclepath on the Danforth, thats where i generally go for my stuff. Also if you plan on going for long rides that require shoes like that, then get riding shorts, they will help save your ass, and a riding jersey helps (sportschek has some jerseys on sale)

I've had Time ATAC pedals for YEARS and they're still good. Cleats need replacing once in awhile but I highly recommend these pedals.

Mine are a much older version, but that's the same "model" so give it a try. The best thing I've noticed is that they clear mud extremely well. I have never had to sit there and pick at my pedals/cleats to make them clean enough to ride. If you hop off your bike in the muck it's easy to get back on and ride with these :D

back in the day I had Shimano Ultegra. and Shimano shoes..
Nothing gives you more solid pedal feel like having locked in feet.

Those aren't bad, I run Twenty6 Prerunner Ti......they hurt so much. Better than the Brooklyn Shinburgers.

To the Op, get something from Shimano as everyone has mentioned.

Ive been using the same pair of Time ATAC pedals for 4 years now. they are a little worse for wear, but still perform as good as the day i got them. I use Lake MX165 shoes with them.
Here is a great source for feedback from some experienced riders.

@Ken York, if you don't want to make the jump to clipless pedals (and shoes) look around for velcro foot straps for platform pedals...something like this:

It's all in the preference, personally I cannot stand Pedal clips what so ever, do I opt for the studded metal pedals. Right now I've been using a set of crankbros 50/50's for about 3 years. Look into crankbros products, they make good quality shit

Great info guys. I ordered some Shimano's M647's (http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=4516), M520's (http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=3759) and Diadora Globe MTB shoes (http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=82559). Total under $150.

Eh... I hope you tried those shoes out in person somewhere first :p
And if you are having major knee pain or ankle pain after you get used to the pedals, try finding something with more float. The Time ATACs I posted about would help there... or the Crankbro Eggbeaters.

Good choice on pedals. I've been rockin' the 520's for 4 years of heavy XC usage. Great budget pedal - rebuildable too.

On a side note, Louis Garneau makes real nice bike clothing. I'm in love with their chamois.

Order arrived and the M647's are on the bike for the convience of not always having to wear cycling shoes. The M520 will sit till I decide if I'll put them on the other bike. Shoes are comfortable, similar to my regular shoes.

Did you have to pay any brokerage fee? I have never bought from ChainReactionCycles.

No brokerage fees on my order. They send through regular mail with EMS tracking service unless other services are requested, so Canada Post delivered mine. Customs at Canada Post are random unless they're acohol/drug related. Pretty quick since I ordered the first of this month and arrived this past Tuesday.

ChainReaction is pretty good to order from. On a DT Swiss 1750 wheelset order I think I just paid whatever the Canadian taxes were.
