View Full Version : Driving without a parking brake?

So my e-brake seized last week and I plan to get it replaced obviously, but I'm just curious if anyone else has driven without an e-brake before, (AT drivers only obviously) I've realized that I don't need it much since I don't park uphill or downhill, also money is tight so I was thinking maybe I could wait it out and search for a part out and buy the cable instead of paying dealership prices. Do you guys think it's a good idea? or should I just get the cable from the dealership as soon as I can for safety precautions.

Thoughts and comments please!

It's fine without the ebrake for a while. Especially with an auto trans. Lots of people never use the ebrake with an auto trans. You can even get away without an ebrake with a manual trans lol.

You can also get aftermarket ebrake cables, they may be cheaper than the dealer.

You wouldn't pass cert. but it will be fine. Drove an auto for years with no e-brake ( granted never park on a hill).

Just keep a brick in your trunk to put behind the tire in case you have to park on a hill :chuckle

Thanks guys, do you know how much an OEM cable kit would be at the dealership with the TM3 discount? Jimmy quoted me 80 to install it and I'm seeing him Thursday for some other stuff, debating whether I should do it now or just put the money somewhere else, perhaps tints

lol get your e-brake fixed before tints. IMO its much more important.

I'd do the safety stuff before tints.

Pretty sure it's illegal to not have a working emergency brake.

From my work (ideal supply/napa) a cable is about 130$ list plus tax, for the kit

Buy the cable and take it to Jimmy at Street Performance for install. Cheapest option.

Yeah, I was just debating on whether I should buy the cable at the dealership or just wait til I find one for cheaper from Kijiji from a part-out or something, but from the looks of it, I'll just go to the dealer and install it through Jimmy tomorrow, anyone know how much the cable kit would be from the dealer with the TM3 discount (assuming its an affiliated dealership)

My e-brake barely worked on my previous manual car for about 4 years. Only on the highest possible setting would it barely hold and then it would seize up and stay on after so I never used it. Use first for parking all the time and you'll be fine, but as others have said, get that replaced before tints for sure.

The cables were $90 each from the dealer for my protege. Not the same car, I know. But you can expect to pay around that for the dealer parts. Much more than aftermarket pieces... Are you not into buying aftermarket parts?

Screw the OEM kit, get some cables from an old bicycle and cut them to the measurement of your e-brake cable. Install and you're set for life!

Doesn't appear that driving without a parking brake is illegal though...the only part of the HTA even relevant is found on this page (http://www.e-laws.gov.on.ca/html/regs/english/elaws_regs_900587_e.htm) and specifies the following:

(8) No wheel brake shall be removed, rendered partly or wholly inoperable, modified so as to reduce its effectiveness or shall operate improperly. O. Reg. 229/95, s. 1.

But I don't think this applies to a parking brake...

A parking brake is a wheel brake. So yes it does apply to parking brake.

A car CANNOT be certified without an e-brake, therefore you car cannot be deemed road worthy if it is inoperable.

What there's no high performance aftermarket e-brake cable that will add 10hp. Lol.

Really though. There is a few things you don't buy used. IMO, brake parts, oil and underwear to name a few.

Ive had a truck impounded due to no parking brake ( and a few other trumped up claims). But the brake was one of the cops reasons.
My car was never checked for e brake though, chances are it won't be by a cop. Got away with it on my car for a long time.

Same thing happened to my friends lifted jeep. The cop pulled him over and had the MTO officer come to inspect his truck. And he inspected MANY things. He ended up pulling the plates off of it for an inoperable e-brake.

Just changed my e-brake this past weekend. It's approx $126+tax(club discount if applicable) from a dealership. There is a how-to on mazda3forums.

Wes08M3
08-30-2012, 02:12 AM
Was that for just one cable? Or two, or all three?

KenYork
08-30-2012, 02:29 AM
It is sold as a set. can't be bought separate.

Wes08M3
08-30-2012, 02:38 AM
Oh weird I didn't know they only came as a set now.

Looks like the dealer price is really comparable to some of the aftermarket stuff. Might as well just buy OEM parts.

Can anyone familiar with parts from a dealer or shop confirm if this product has everything included, the seller claims its brand new from the dealership but I don't know what the actual product looks like so I wouldn't know if theres something missing.
