My fiancée was at the gym the other day and while in the middle of her crossfit routine an old man in a Sebring mistook R for D and drove all over her car.

Kia is a complete loss, 18k worth of damage.

The elderly owner tried to drive away before he was stopped.

OH MY GOD.

Wow what a f**kin douchebag. Boils my blood to think that he tried to DRIVE AWAY after causing $18,000 worth of damage to SOMEONE ELSES CAR!
This isn't just a scratch or two buddy, own the f*** up to your mistake...it's not like you didn't realize you just dummied a car based on the damage done to her car.

Dave, I'm glad your fiancée is safe and unharmed & hopefully this gets resolved in an appropriate and timely manner for you guys.

We get a cheque today then insurance takes the rental back Tues :/

If he drove away things would have been complicated to say the least.

Attempting to drive away (to me anyway) is just as bad as actually leaving the scene. The fact that he had intentions to leave after the accident make him culpable to that charge as well as any other consequences that will arise from doing something so dumb.

I think revoking his license would probably be a good idea in this case.

Ah old people and parking lots, nothing I dread more. Have had 2 accidents in my life, both involving old women and parking lots, both times I wasn't at fault. Good thing your fiancee wasn't in the car when it happened and insurance took care of it quick. I seriously think people over 65 should be required to take annual driving tests to see if they're competent enough to be on the road.

well my parents are almost near that age so I would have to diagreee with you on that one. My dad drives slow as a turtle usually and he would never gun it out of a parking spot. This dude obiously doesnt know wtf hes doing. Hope he gets charged for "attempting" to leave or something. Glad your fiance wasnt in the car Dave! It sucks the Sebring wasnt damaged more than a bumper!

Nothing against the elderly, my parents are at or near that age as well. It's not even the point of driving fast, in fact both my accidents were low speed. It's more likely their reaction times are slower, they're less attentive, obviously not by choice. If they pass an annual test then by all means continue driving.

yeah its true about reaction time lol i know some people in their 70s (like my uncle) that still drive great after years of experience. I think its a combination of experience and the general ability of the person. i myself i know am not a good park-er lol the self-inflicted paint scrape and rear bumper ding are examples. anyway, it was an unfortunate situation to say the least, shit happens!

one thing im wondering, did the sebring push her car all the way there (assuming car was parked with the wheel turned)? old dude must have freaked out and kept his foot on the gas lol

Ya the car was pushed, I imagine he was still hammering the gas

Firstly glad everyone looks to be ok and that it was resolved quickly. I feel bad for the old man but he definitely shouldn't have tried to drive away. He was probably in panic mode.

I'm curious about the logistics of how this worked. Did he come from the other side of the curb, jump up on the kia's hood, push the car around the parking lot and then drive back down off the hood?

Looks like the Accord also got involved somehow too.

Sucks man. I equate Chrysler Sebrings to Toyota Camrys/Corollas, all of them, while competent cars, usually are inhabited by people who simply cannot drive.

Did you get Depreciation coverage? It would royally suck especially if the car is recently new.

What now for a new ride? Mazda 3 GS-SKY? I hear they have lots of promotions to clear out 2012 models now!!! :chuckle

Damn... It's always a Chrysler.. Look at the bright side - at least it didn't catch fire when hitting your fiancee's car and smoldered both cars

Basically, yes.
