Hey Guys,

I have a 2008.5 3 Sport GT (automatic) with 98,000 km's. Car is strictly a DD, no track/auto x etc.

I'm planning ahead for my 100K service.

I'm on original brakes (rotors/pads/calipers).

While cleaning the car today, i had a look at the brake pads and was surprised to still find substantial pad material left. I guess i drive smoothly.

I've never had brake pads last this long on any of my prior cars, just wondering when people with the same car as me changed their pads/rotors?

I'm wondering when the pads are done, should i just have the rotors machined or will they be dunzo as well?

Based on how long everything lasted, i'm tempted to go with OEM replacements....but I obviously don't want to pay dealership prices.

I've already PM'd vendors here for price quotes and I'm considering Hawk HPS pads (used them on my prior car with good results), but i'm wondering about rotors. I don't want to buy throwaway, made in China junk.

I've checked online as well but shipping costs are pretty high for heavy items like rotors.

What are you guys running and how have they lasted so far?

Thanks

stoptech streetperformance pads are better than hps and cheaper too. for rotors stick to oem or something like brembo blanks, dba and centric/stoptech/powerslot.

should've gone to jrp's sale, they had great prices on rotors...

I had mine got 140,000km, but were definately hardened. I ended up replacing them just to get more bite (the fronts had 3mm left, the rears had 4-5mm left. I figured I'd be happy if they lasted just as long (which means the car would be hitting 280k...)

I do have a standard though. I've heard of the back pads going on our cars around 50-60k in an automatic. Do you do mostly highway driving?

I also swear by "bedding" my pads, google it, but don't hold me responsible if they screw up or warp rotors, lol ;-)

Thanks for this, yes mostly highway.

The rear brakes on my '05 Automatic were done at around that interval, but still have the fronts at 133k. I got it used with 39k on it in '09 and for some reason thought they must've been replaced once but pretty sure they are originals now that I think about it.

personally, for rotors, you can't beat oem for the price...
i changed my rotors at...i think 180-200k....
rear pads for me were the first to go at around...80-100k, and my front pads lasted till around 120-140k

again, everyone is different, and will yeild different results for wear..

For my 07 I changed the front pads and rotors around 115k. Rears are still good and I'm currently at 133k.

Go with OEM blanks and OEM replacement pads from an Affiliate Dealership. If you like how the brakes feel now then might as well keep them that way. I went with OEM again and am happy with them.

Different replacement pads and rotors work differently and may feel different than what you are used to. Hawk pads are and example. They are more progressive compared to OEM. I would prefer to feel the braking right away rather than having to press a little harder.

Anyone know of dealers in Markham/Newmarket area that give discount on parts? I need new front pads.

brake lifespan all depends on driving characteristics, so its hard to pinpoint a specific milage to replace. just check your pads and rotors once every so often and check all your fluids too.

depends on what type of pads you want and what your budget is. brake components are not parts you want to skimp out on, just like tires. go online and find reviews and real world customer surveys that have used the products and see if you can narrow down your choices.

just because something looks nice in an ad, doesnt mean its very good!

ALWAYS replace rotors and pads at the same time. Buy quality and don't be cheap.
Each pad bites the rotor a different way. In almost all cases at work when brakes need replacement the rotors are under spec anyways. Or they are so close to it that there is no point in not replacing the rotors. When rotors go under spec they become brittle and with the slightest tap can shatter. Seen many cases like this as well.

Jimmy says I need front pads, and front pads alone. I asked about rotors and he said no way.

Try Avante. They'll just need your TM3 user name.

Avante Mazda gives the tm3 discount which is 10 percent I think

I have a 2012 with 84,000km on it. My brakes still have plenty of life on them. Like users have already mentioned, it really depends on your driving style to determine when you will need to replace.

Then does anybody at what amount of millimeters the brake pads should be at for replacing?

^^ 3mm to 4mm

Paton - go to Mazda of Toronto and leverage the TM3 discount. I'm a little surprised about Jimmy's recommendation for pads only, although we do not know the entire situation. As MacGuyver stated before, always best practice to replace pad and rotors together

Min for safety is just under 2mm I think its 1.8mm or something. If we have a car at 4mm we advise they will more or less need them by thr next service or in 8 000km usually. If its less we say come back in 4 000 and we csn recheck the measure if they dont replace them at that time.

I have a 2010 with 96 000 km and my pads are still at 6mm . Rotors I can feel are getting a bit warped. But when I chsnge them it will be hawk pads stop tech rotors and prolly stainless lines all around and a fluid flush. After all
Based on the.oems wearing I might not change the replscements until over 200 000km. But I also have my brake servies done ever 24 000 km as well so maybe that helps :)

my 2010 has 144000 km still on original pads and disc's, funny tho, my discs are totally done and I still have a few mm of pads left.
So when I do my brakes im gonna have to do both!

sarujo

^^ best practice is that both are done at the same time anyways... If you are down to 3 or 4 mm I would replace now. Don't skimp on brakes.

I have 110,000km on the OEM pads and they are in need of service. Keep in mind while this car is a daily driver it has done 3 track days on those pads!

I got 81,700 kms out of my OEM front pads before I had to change them.
