View Full Version : "Interesting" experience at a tim hortons

This just happened to me at a tim hortons around the 400/Jane area... i was walking through the first set of doors and saw that an older lady had her hands full trying to make her way out. I reached out to open and hold the door for her, at which point she lifted her leg and kicked the door open, hitting the side of my outreached arm in the process.
Not wanting to make a scene, i backed away and gave her room to leave. She proceeds to shove her way past me (there was plenty of room, no need for contact), got stuck at the second set of doors and started yelling "stupid chinky chinky, dun you know when you needs ta open da god damned door for me?", complete with bloodclots and bumbaclots sprinkled in for effect.
Not trying to incite hate, just curious. Is this kind of thinking still prevalent in certain cultures or areas?
If I witnessed this I would have called her out. People are disgusting. There's no excuse for that.

In the past 2 months I have witnessed several instances of persons with Tourette's syndrome. It's more common than you think.

Very common across the GTA. Racist pricks come in all ages and backgrounds.

Please tell me you just walked in and let her deal with the doors herself.
We get spoiled here in Canada with the general acceptance of multiculturalism. I get reminded of this almost every time I travel. That said, there are tons if people here (and not necessarily recent immigrants either) that are still completely obtuse about coexisting.
I don't know that it's limited to or more prevalent particular geographic areas though. Generally, I see it more in areas that have a high concentration of a single ethnic or cultural group.
Edit: +1 to jonjon above

You'll still run into that sometimes, depends where you are. Surprises me a bit in toronto, but there are intolerant people everywhere. Mostly old people.
Like I grew up in a rural town in ontario, we didn't have any asian/african/middle eastern people (same applies to my gf's town in NS), and if one had shown up the kids wouldn't have had a problem, nor would 98% of adults, but you've got some crazy old f'kers out there. You just have to be unlucky to run into them.
Actually now that I'm typing, same applies to some people in QC with languages (french obviously). If you don't speak french around the 2% of the population that is very intolerant you could get anything from insulted, to ignored, to stabbed lol

lol i have to agree with the old people part. it seems the older u get the more cranky u are haha. Was there anyone else around that had failed to hold the door for her before you? I'm thinking she had expected someone else to hold the door and they didnt so she got pissed off and kicked the door and you were the unfortunate recipient of her rage. maybe she was having a really bad day or something. the racist slur was totally uncalled for and I would have been pissed if she had said that to me. i would have loved to say to her "watch your mouth you bumbaclot" right back at her lol some people just don't have any respect or manners.

To answer your question............... Yes.
You think Toronto doesn't have racism because it is multicultural?
Multicultural doesn't mean shit. Just means alot of different people live here. Doesn't mean anyone likes each other.
Go work in construction and you'll see how bad it really is out here

For some reason the fact that the old lady wasn't white makes this less severe and disgusting...
I don't know why. I take it much harder when its white people being racist.

Well I'll agree with the " I don't know why " part, cause racism is racism. Weather white to black, black to white, Asian to Polynesian ,etc etc whatever. It doesn't make any of it less severe in any way. It's outright ignorant. And yes it angers me. Am I ranting yet?

That in its self is the worst attitude ever. Personally I'm sick and tired of my race, gender and background getting in the way of day to day life.
I can't even politely say to someone that I cannot understand what your saying without being called a racist caker. ( happened just the other day. )
I get called a racist at least 6 times a year. Usually for something stupid like saying no to giving someone a smoke. Or asking a lady how she didnt see my car there. ( I actually had to laugh, her response was " what, because I'm Chinese it means I can't drive". All I said was how could you not see my car. )
People who get the worst of racism now a days is in fact white Canadians. Why. Well because a black person can't be racist. ( bull shit)
That woman was a complete bitch, and it is unfortunate that people have this attitude, especially in this day and age.
I love the fact that Toronto is such a multicultural city. It is just really sad that no one can look at each other as just equals.
At the end of the day. The op can hold their head up high for not reducing themselves to such a disgusting level.
As well being in construction, I hear a lot of racist comments. But for those who do as well, really take a look at the people who are saying them. Most of them are generally first or second generation immigrants. USUALLY not always.

i think its mostly about upbringing from an early age, and sometimes theyre love for theyre own culture is what makes them racist without them even knowing it.
when i use to work at a garage there was all sorts of racist crap flying around from customers. sometimes i would have to bring a car in and get handed the keys in front of the owner. as i make my way out to the car the owner whispers something to the clerk and i would have had to hand the keys to my white co-worker that was just there as an apprentice. needless to say, it was pretty obvious that it was a race thing.
i can understand why some people become sour like that. but its one of the soul reasons for all the hate around the world. people think theyre better than others and that they deserve all the nice things in life without thinking about anyone else. you got the whole deal with the Senkaku islands between the chinese and japanese. its literally a small island with barely anything on it. some of the things that chinese people do really makes me disgusted to be related. people need to start acknowledging that its not our race that defines us, were all human. its the actions that we make that decides who we are.

well canadians as a nation isnt blamed for the racism. its the concentration of multicultural people conflicting and causing trouble which gives everyone a bad name in one way or another.
i dont wanna get religion involved but i can say it plays a big role. but i have never met a religion where it says you have to hate on other people yet it causes so much dispute among people. we can all learn from each other and move on. but for some reason we dont.

I do see what you are saying, I'm using Canadian as a way to focus on a group of people without accents. ( or with Canadian accents)
What I'm trying to get at ( but failing ) is when I've been conversing with people who aren't Canadian, it's like there is an automatic assumption that because I'm not a visible minority ( I hate that term), and not from elsewhere that I do not want them in my country.
I worked retail for years, and this was consistently a reaction to me being pleasant to them. Asking how they like it here. That kind of stuff.
My point is. People are racist. Of all walks of life. It's just unfair to generalize an entire population do to some ass holes. Every body ( including white people and Canadians, of all colors) get segregated one way or another. Take a look at collage bursarys and you will see my point. As a canadian born with Canadian parents, 50% of bursarys at collages are automatically off my list. There was actually bursarys at my collage that stated visible minority only.

yeaa, i hate it when people just assume stuff on the spot just by the way they look or by race. to me multiculturalism means everyone, there are no minorities or anything. some people just automatically leave white people out when "multi"culture is mentioned. which leaves me wondering if some people think some races are not people. (which is an absurd way of seeing things)
there is a lot of personal heat in this discussion because we've been through all this before. which is why I double check before and after posting lol. one slip up might brand someone as being a racist.

+1 that visible minority term is so 80s...that term should be abolished, i dont understand why its still in use. whenever I fill out a job app they have those stupid "optional sections" asking if you are aboriginal or a visible minority...i always select refuse to answer. they can collect their statistics elsewhere.
college bursary's for visible minority only?? if that's not racist i dunno what is. so they assume you are "poor" because you are a minority? makes no sense at all. bursaries should be solely based on income, nothing else! talk about a backwards society jeez

there was a radio station talking about an all gay highschool which can roughly relate to that situation. having a specific facility for a certain type of lifestyle is kinda of working backwards in society as it creates a barrier between the casual highschools and all gay highschools. theyre not fixing a problem, just separating the differences. and just separating a certain type of thing usually causes more of a stir in society as the differences are magnified solely because its concentrating the difference.
for example. 2 white , 2 chinese, 2 black kids go to the same school with each other. how do you think theyll grow up? now take those kids and separate them by race and put them in a private school without making contact with the other races. how do you think theyll grow up?
it sickens me that huge companies, schools, and policies are so blatantly racist and they get away with it scotch free without a single question. sometimes its the people who are confined in a little box and are so insecure that they start turning the hatred in theyre life on other people and races. they need to break free from that and see life as whole. see the world as it is and not from a television or news media where they brand people, races, and cultures for things that they are not. people have chances to share and learn, yet people decide to ignore it.

It seems like everyone here is on the same page. People just need to see everyone as equals.
There is many nationalities and skin colours in my family. From native to black to filipino and I even went to a gay wedding on Sunday. ( while one man was outside screaming there evil. )
It seems that every time progress is made in the world ( ie a black president) there is something that changes your mind. There is no need for any of this inequality bull.
Between the op here having a racial slur thrown at them, and the woman who was getting nasty comments at the arm drop drag racing, it seems we as the human race really haven't progressed at all.
It really sucks that crap like this still happens. And it does happen to all of us, even me.

When I was in Jamaica I felt really comfortable there while I was walking around the streets. I always thought that I was going to get looked at funny because I was white but everyone was really cool and chilled out. The taxi driver there told us that Jamaica gets a bad rap but it was just like anywhere else... you have good and bad areas around town.

i would have just told the old lady to fck off and just move on
you tried to help her, she didn't acknowledge it, then cussed you out for not opening the second door - should have just left her there to kick open the second door.
she was just a miserable old lady and needed to be put in her place.

Yeah its unfortunate that so many people are still so narrowminded and uncaring. I simply can't understand the justification of these people for showing racism towards another, or thinking that their colour of skin, creed, nationality, or any number of reasons give them the right to be a d-bag. Unfortunately, I don't think its something that is ever going to disappear completely. There will always be those backwater morons that can't see beyond the superficial BS and realize that we're all just human beings. Its really as simple as that.

Lol, ive lived this as well. I once worked a Caribana gig as security and got called a racist 10 times in one discussion. All because a gentleman from Trinidad made a fuss about the beer prices. So i told him "if you dont like the prices then feel free to go somewhere else". He heard " i dont like you in my country ( I was actually born in Cuba and am also an immigrant) get out!". So yeah at that point it did not matter me telling him over and over that it was his behaviour not his skin colour that i had a problem with. I WAS A RACIST.
