Neither Magnaflow nor Flowmaster offer a muffler or kit for my car yet. So I went the alternative way and got a ... Spintech. Had them on my Ford F150 before and they sounded a bit loud. This time I got a much quieter muffler with 2" inlet/outlets (same side of the muffler). It's called SPINTECH 311SCS SPORTSMAN SPLIT CASE.
Product code: 311scs. Size: 4" by 9" by 13". Material: aluminized steel. Price at spintechmufflers.com (http://www.spintechmufflers.com): $128 plus $30 shipping to a UPS warehouse in Port Huron, MI (2 hours away from me). Should get it next week. Will make a before- and after-video with sounds of the exhaust and post a link here. One thing for sure, this muffler WILL sound different than what you hear from a typical Japanese 4-cyl car.
I measured the diameter of the stock pipes and it's 2" in and 1.75" out (the tailpipe). I'll make them both 2". Should sound awesome and add some horse power. Stay tuned.

looking forward to hear it.. but i have heard my fair sure of japanese cars so i dont know if anything would surprise me at this point. i dont think your going to see any actual horsepower gains from just a muffler replacement, maybe if you add full exhaust system for much better flow even though the stock muffler is a bit more restrictive but you wouldnt see anything in leaps and bounds for more power. maybe 1-2 horsepower but i doubt it from just a muffler replacement.

I don't know ... I already feel some minor improvement just from dropping in the K&N air filter. If I get the same effect from the muffler, I'll be happy. I'm shooting for extra 5 HP minimum ;)

hmm..i wanna hear this
They are shipping it tomorrow. Should get it installed next week. I'll do a vid with sound comparison of 3 setups: 1) stock air filter, stock muffler 2) K&N air filter, stock muffler and 3) K&N air filter, Spintech muffler.

5hp with a muffler swap and drop in filter? i think the butt dyno is a bit off. Put a full cold air intake and you will get much more throttle response not necessarily horsepower

where's the "facepalm" emoticon?
OP, you just spent cash to make your car louder with no performance gain.
You may as well just have punched holes in your OEM muffler.

agreed. 1-2 at most, if any.

I wouldn't expect anything but some extra noise

My main concern that the dealer would void specific warranty on the car. IE Exhaust warranty gone, and possibly engine depending on the issue at hand.

Yeah, it's called a Japanese 4-cyl RICE :chuckle

I've never heard of engine work being denied based only on a muffler, at least from a REPUTABLE dealer. However, exhaust problems will likely be your domain now, but that's to be expected when you modify part of it!

I had the Spintech muffler installed today in a Port Huron, Mi shop. It sounds ... well, different :) but I'm happy nevertheless because how it sounds from INSIDE THE CAR. Check out this video on my YouTube Channel. (http://youtu.be/fDDuM9rqYEk) It's definitely not the V8 sound but then I just filled up for the first time in US: half a tank of 87 for $3.76/gal or 32.55 total for 8.6 Gal or 32.6 L. If I was driving my monster V8 Ford F150, I'd've left 100 bucks easy at this Shell.

It does sound deeper with this muffler and maybe a bit louder than stock. You were a bit surprised in your video but members probably knew that this would happen. Sounds good if you like it fairly quiet and a deeper tone.
You do have an advantage in pricing if you go to the States as often as you do.
These are other exhausts you can consider:
Fairly quiet - Racing Beat 2.0 Axle Back
Not quiet - Corksport Catback for 2.0 (option to add a racepipe/test pipe - that's really loud)
Some people have retrofitted the MazdaSpeed exhaust as well to a single exhaust. Those sound good too.

sounds better then stock, but of course its not going to be anything loud mind you the muffler will wear in a bit and maybe become a bit louder. usually you find that with new exhaust systems wont sounds the same after a few thousand kms. you could always add headers or a test pipe remove the cat if you want it louder. other then that i think it sounds good. just needs a nice tip to finish the exhaust and its golden.

I'm glad actually it added a bit of a bass to the sound. It's more fun now to shift gears ;) I hope it's not going to drone on the freeway. I'm leaving Port Huron, MI now for a two hour drive back to Cambridge, ON. Will report how the muffler sounds at 110-115 KM/H. BTW, this muffler has no packing inside. It has 'traps' that capture the sound waves. Nothing will wear out, but the sound will become probably a bit louder and deeper as I put on more KMs.

if you change your mind about liking your muffler, i reccomend the CS catback and racepipe. Deep sounding, not raspy at all or "rice" sounding. Myself and Hyperion both have it... i believe were the only ones with the CBE+RP setup that i know of on here for 2010+ (could be wrong!) you could always have a listen at one of the meets

its very hard to get a 4 cylinder to sound like a v8, mainly cause of the displacement difference.
but in any case, if you want to go louder, why not remove the resonators in the stock exhaust, and replace the 2 cats (one on the header section, and the other on the midpipe) if you want to be loud.
tbh, not surprise at all about your reaction in the vid. almost every kind of exhaust/muffler has been done on the car. listen to your fellow mazda owners. :D

+1 to removing your resonators.

I removed the resonators on my F150 and the exhaust was too loud and all the mufflers except the last Flowmaster DRONED like crazy at freeway speeds. I'm happy with the Spintech on the Mazda. It's only a bit louder than stock but definitely increases the FUN FACTOR when driving.

Sitting at the A&A Exhaust in Hamilton, ON on Grays Rd. These guys are magicians when it comes to exhaust. I asked them to throw out the outlet pipe that comes out of the Spintech muffler (2" diameter) and put in a pipe with 2.5" diam. They're using aluminized steel and the last foot will be stainless. I'd add a fancy tip but I don't want to go bigger than 2.5" dia (had a bad drone experience on my F150). I was sitting in the lobby when the manager started the Mazda and drove it away. Boy, that Spintech sounds great from the outside! I'm really glad I put it in. Will do a vid once the new tailpipe is in and put it on my YouTube channel.

Corksport CBE drones pretty loudly @ 110-115 speeds. Unless you have a 6th gear I'd recommend against if that's not your thing. Sounds awesome for "spirited" driving on twisty back roads.
If I had to do it over again I would have done the RB axle-back with possibly a resonator delete.

This post is really old but I saw the youtube video then somehow embarked upon your forum post.
Is this the muffler you purchased for your vehicle ?
