Was wondering. I ordered an Eonon Deck and Camber Arms to my US PO box and I'm going to pick it up this week. I also am picking up some plastidip (Hit me up if you want me to grab you some).

Question is how much am I going to be paying to bring it back over the border?
I thought about just buying some groceries so I can say that I went over to buy groceries, get gas, and buy beer. And then just keeping everything else in my glove box like it has always been in there. Should I even bother or should I just pay the duties if they're minimal.

Let me know if anyone has any info. Also does anyone know any good places in Niagara Falls/Buffalo New York?
Cheers! :)

Pay the duties.
It will be less than $100 and you won't get black listed if you get caught

See exemption limits here:

That being said, you should always declare the total amount of your goods. The exact amount, and whether or not you'll have to pay taxes is dependent on how busy the crossing is.

If you are crossing on the last day of a long weekend, there is a good chance you'll be waived through (as was the case with my winter tires which were in plain sight). If you're crossing in the middle of a weekday, essentially off peak hours, you will be asked to pay tax on the amount you declare. You can usually low ball the amount, as they are more or less interested in collecting revenue...

You could stay overnight for a stay of over 24hrs at a cheap hotel and get the $200 exemption. Otherwise better pay as was mentioned.

Hmm that was a great site thanks zzz3.
It turns out there is no duty on Sat NAV's and GPSs. So I'll declare it as such because it is infact a GPS as well as a stereo.
But in the duties calculator a GPS/SATNAV touchscreen in-car unit is duty-free. I'd still have to pay taxes though.. hmmm

I think as Jackal suggested it may be cheaper in the long run for me to find a cheap overnight place with the gf and get some beer and wings and catcha show. Make a night of it and then return worry free the next day reciepts in hand.

If there's multiple people in the car - you might get away with a claim within 24hrs.

Often I'll claim $150-200 on a day trip - but that's for a car (or van) load of 4-5 people. Customs doesn't really care about collecting $20 in duties no matter what time of day

hmm sounds good. Perhaps I'll just perform the stereo swap out myself while I'm in the states. Throw the old one in the trunk and then if they find it say it's been in there forever and I forgot to declare it. It's not worth that much anyway. I'll declare the camber arms but as they are only like 50-60 dollars perhaps I won't get taxed?

i lied and got busted when i was 25. 7 years later i'm finally off their sh!t list.

not worth it. pony up and pay the dues. that's my lesson. Not worth the few dollars saved. And you're still saving vs buying here.

you alwasy have to pay taxes. its duties that can be exempt. people often think everything is exempt which is not the case.

My 4 friends and I went on Saturday and declared $250. They let us go. I'm guessing it was because it was busy.

this has happened to me the last 2 trips in the past 2 months.

first time 2 of us $500 between both of us
second 3 of us $400 between 3

It's a crappy feeling when the officers gather and tear your car apart while you watch. This happened to me (and my car), I declared everything(and everyone else) but one of them didn't, and I was pretty pissed off at him. Thankfully I wasn't blacklisted, but I'm sure he was. He had $600+ in stuff and declared under $50. We were all shopping in separate groups so I didn't know.

thats normal. you are permitted $200 in goods per person, not as a group.

i regularly cross with just under 200. i always declare everything. if you get caught lying its a big hassle. it screws up your crossings for many years.

No, you get $0 for less than 24 hours. We went for like 10 hours.

Exactly

But if you cross over for the day - or even just a few hours for lunch - and you happen to buy a sweater, even if you declare it - they won't waste the time and usually just let you go.

Unless of course - you look all suspect, your car weighs significantly more than when you drive in, and you have shopping bags piled up to your laps... Then they ask you to pull over to the left and to park your car. Then the fun begins.

They're gonna ask you what the total amount is that you spent in the US.... you tell em the amount and show receipts for that amount... if lucky, they'll tell you to have a nice day, if not, you pay HST on the declared amount and you carry on with your day.
No need to mention duties unless they bring it up.

I'm heading down to the US tomorrow morning to pick up some packages from my mailbox... Hope the border isn't busy on the way back.

I've only been stopped once this year so far and I've gone over 8 times not including tomorrow. Lucky I guess.

you don't need to mention duties. they assess that. duties are levied basically on imported goods. that's what the North american free trade is about. all you do is tell them value of all goods coming across. they will determine if they want you to pay or not. if you pay, you will bring all receipts in, they will calculate the taxes and also the duties applied depending on where items are made (99%) abroad. if you know something is north american made, you let them know to avoid duties, but you still pay taxes.

While. I went over bought beer and picked up my packages. On the way into the states they took my car apart pretty much and put it back together and on the way out she asked if I had any booze/tobbaco.
I showed her the receipt and she just waved me on.

On a different note. I EFFED UP and only ordered one camber arm. D'OH so now I'll be heading back next week. lmao.
Cheers guys!
ps. EONON deck is amazing..

The information on "when you'll have to pay duties" is misleading. There's actually no hard and fast rule as to when they'll tax you. I cross the border daily and have found the process completely arbitrary, COMPLETELY.

I buy cigarettes almost weekly and 8/10 times I won't get taxed, and then there'll be those times where they just decide they want to tax me (it's $15 for three packs). I brought back two air condition units, valued at $450 total, no charges. Brought back $800 in clothing, no charges. Brought back $100 textbooks, taxed. Brought back $200 in clothing, taxed. Brought back Koni yellow's, charges.

I just go to the states for school and pick up stuff from my US address, never there for more than 8 hours, but it's completely at the discretion of the border guard. Not as to what time / day it is.

They will also tax you on the shipping if you have to pay so if the shipping cost is on the receipt they will charge you for that also. Most times it's a very small amount but I just had an order where the shipping was $200. So you can imagine how annoyed I was when I had to pay $25 in tax on the shipping.

Been studying and have family working high in customs;

You're likely to pay the Duty and taxes which will still be a lot cheaper than having it shipped here or purchasing here.

The NYUSA as a MFN is about 5% duty, and 14% taxes.

Remember, if you're kind to the officer, and declare everything you bring over, with all receipts on hand, you're more than likely to just be informed to have a great day and happy new year.

If any questions let me know, ill go back through on specifics in our import manual and help you out.

Have you gotten your eonon installed yet? I just put mine in this AM, but when I play my iPod I get "do not watch while driving" and have no visible control over song choice, artist, etc.
