That's stupid. Miami will not fold. Astros traded away most of their top players last year and the Red Sox unloaded $250 million in salary and none of those trades were vetoed. Selig said 2 of his advisors said that Miami got some very good players in return.
And you don't sign a free gaent to trade him right away !! What other free agent would EVER sign with you after that ? They might trade Rasmus and play Gose instead.

So what do you guys think about the Jays bringing back John Gibbons?
well with such an influx of well known players that might have big egos, a disciplined take no crap type of alpha was needed to show everyone who's boss. i didn't see that coming but given the fact that he is familiar with the organization that should allow him to focus on the things that matter, the team. gibbons seemed to do well winning wise with less talent in his years here so you'd think he would do better with more. however his often combative coaching style mind not get the best out of this new talent. if things go bad with gibbons, i don't expect them to get better with him and a quick firing might happen if he loses the players respect. i think it is interesting that 4 of the biggest bats in the lineup are dominican. i think bautista has shown good leadership and composure these last couple of years and hopefully he is able to be a leader/influence on those guys, the way i believe he was on encarnacion who enjoyed a career year.

They do have one of the top 4 rotations in the league....if they hadn't gone with the Dickey trade i was really hoping they'd have picked up Shawn Marcum. Sure he wouldn't be the pitcher Dickey is, and he has had a rough year or so, but he has talent. I remember when he pitched for the Jays, everyone loved him. And i remember how pissy everyone got when they traded him for a then unknown Brett Lawrie. They idea of having both would make it seem like we won that trade (which i think we did in the end).

Exactly!
Half the team is new together, trying to understand how each other plays.
Some of their key players have only played half of the games. You can't blame the fielders for Homeruns and walks.
Too many people I know who are not even interested in baseball joined the bandwagon when they heard Toronto would have a good team, the only time they speak up is when they lose, but when they are winning you don't hear a peep from them, because they don't actually watch baseball.
Monday night game could have gone better, both the play off the bunt and the throw from Kawasaki should have gone to 2nd, neither should have went to first.
Give them time, well see whos wagon jumpers once they get on a roll.

I am a HUGE jays fan.
that being said, the following stats have nothing to do with learning how the rest of the team plays the game:
Batting % - .226 (28th in MLB)
OBP - .294 (26th in MLB)
SO's - 167 (6th most in MLB)
BB's - 73 (7th fewest in MLB)
Errors - 14 (26th in MLB)
Defensive assists - 184 (23rd in MLB)
Pitching staff ERA - 4.43 (25th in MLB)
Runs allowed - 106 (2nd worst in MLB)
That being said, I know it is still early and I'm not giving up on them (I never give up on the Jays). But at the same time, NOTHING has gone right this year so far. We also seem to get more than our fair share of bad calls go against us.

Yeah. I mean Lawrie is a K machine early this season so far so that doesn't help either.
I know some of you guys will scoff at this notion but the more I see it, the more I think the umpires have been coached to call close plays against the jays. All the balls outside the strike zone, the bad calls at first base...
MLB essentially admitted to it two seasons ago.
I am a huge Jays fan but even I agree that after 3 weeks of playing together, things should be happening more now. The boys need to loosen up a little and have some fun. I have noticed that when they have fun, they play better. I'm just wondering if they're putting on undue pressure on their shoulders...

Wow, another sweep AGAIN today against Detroit, another Division leading team.
This years team looks completely unstoppable; quality pitching, superb defense and BOMBastic offense. There is no other lineup in the whole league that can strike fear into pitcher's hearts then the Jays do. I know it's still early and a lot of baseball to still be played, but if they keep this up who knows what can happen, title maybe?
My only gripe is the lack of fan support at home games. With a team playing this good we should be selling out every home game rather than have 20,000 at a weekday game, given there are larger crowds on weekends but watching them play to a half-empty stadium is very disparaging and also reflects on the team as well.
Come folks, let's go out there and support our Blue Jays. (Remember their the last team to bring home a major sports championship to the city)

Alot of people commute in on the GO to watch the game. More so now that they are playing well

it's pretty difficult for me to watch a game (w/ 2 kids). Best I can do is catch the highlight reels - which don't really give a good in-depth coverage of how the players perform.
Another sad part is the people around me don't watch sports at all :( Co-workers, friends and family are all bandwagon jumpers.

unfortunately the jays aren't a pitching and defense team... canadians don't know much about baseball and think homeruns will win everything... people thought arencebia was good since he could crack 20-25 hr even though he struck out 150+ and sucked at catching and pretty much everything actually

Yeah he isn't superb at defense but it's his offensive game that the Jays like/want. It's like the Jays playing Francisco at 3rd even though his defense is awful and moving Lawrie to 2nd just so they can have Francisco in the line up.
I'm sure in late games they'll switch out Francisco for Tolleson and Navarro for someone like Kratz for defensive purposes.
Not just Navarro's inability to throw runners out, his game calling is not very good.
Him and Buehrle aren't too bad together; he takes care of all calls and Buehrle just pitches. The lack of wins in his last 5 starts is cause of the dumb bats going silent :(

Okay maybe.
I guess I don't really like the way he's employed. He's prone to giving up home runs, and his OPP skyrockets on his third time through the order. In close games I think he needs to have a much shorter leash late in games. Seems like he's never taken out until he's given up multiple runs and/or has multiple base runners.

yeah but i think its because him and buerle are expected to eat 225+ innings plus. there simply aren't guys who can be trusted to pitch and eat innings. guys like morrow and happ have only pitched 150+ inning once and twice respectively in their careers. and thats a pretty low benchmark for a starter.

Best bet is that the Wild Card spots even out some more and we sneak it by sweeping the Mariners.

yeah but jays play the orioles in 2 more series... i think 6 games total. that is gonna be tough. jays need wins against anyone period

11 back on the Orioles.
4 back on a Wild Card Spot, 3 back from Mariners who are 3rd, 0.5 ahead of the Yankees.
6 Games against the Orioles, 4 against the Mariners, 4 against the Yankees, 14 total.
Numbers don't look good, but hopefully the Jays and everyone else can keep it interesting. Realistically, we'll need to win close to all of them in order to crack 90 wins to have a shot. Oakland and KC both need 7 and 9 games to hit 90 wins; the former is do-able, the Jays might have a chance with Kansas City.

The Happ doesn't seem to great right now, but no one would have expected freak injuries to Saunders (okay, maybe him...) and Stroman.
It's funny, AA keeps going "oh, management says I can go get what I want, they've given me financial flexibility, they are willing to spend, etc." but it's evident that Rogers has slapped a hard, hard cap on AA. Otherwise, he would have done something already.

i didn't like that happ trade at all. i dont care for happ but you can't trade an average sp for an average outfielder, especially relying on youngsters in your starting rotation.
i dont like to call stroman a freak injury. until you've proven your a mlb starting pitcher, you can't be relied upon imho. a sp needs to go 150+ innings a year... hutchison, stroman, sanchez, etc aren't proven.

Price can single handily win you 8-9 out of 10 games he'll play for the remainder of the season. Means even more if it's against divisional teams.
When winning 51% of your games means you have a winning season, any one player who affects 20% of the season is huge!

I don't know what to say anymore but Go jays Go. Go to a stadium that kills the jays most times and out of the 3 games only give up one run, vs our 10 through 3, two shutouts and at least one home run from every game. It's a lot of fun watching these guys have a blast.

How does 1 person who plays every 5 games really make such a big difference?
There are number of reasons.
First, of course David Price was the best pitcher available. The best the Jays have had since Roy Halladay. So besides getting one of the best players in the game, management showed confidence in the team and spent big bucks on helping them win right NOW. Huge morale boost vs last year at this time. Also, picking up Price means Aaron Sanchez can go to the bullpen. So getting a legitimate ace pitcher not only solidifies the starting rotation, it makes the bullpen one of the best in the AL.

They have it going so well in every single aspect from Hitting and home runs and runs in general (#1 in all categories), pitching has been amazing and if Stroman comes back it'll be even better. And the fielding especially in the outfield has been incredible. God I'm loving this team. Good job AA. You have definitely done the job you were hired to do! Go Jays Go.

Time to bring this back. Only a handful of games left and a 3 games up on New York. If we keep playing the way we have been although there has been some fatigue in the lineup they still keep winning. And we didn't help New York winning 2-3 and well 13-6 all season. Let's go Jays. And with price on his game and Stroman doing incredible when he should still be on the DL. Even with tulo out we still have an amazing defence on the infield. Can't get enough of these jays. And those crowds going insane. This is what Canadian sports is all about.

If you didn't expect the crowd at the Dome, or any park for that matter, to get rowdy then you are naive. I can see why a lot of the fans got upset after that call with tensions and emotions so high. Do I blame them? No way. I'm certainly not saying they should have thrown anything, but I can certainly understand why.
As for the antics after Bautista's homer, those were uncalled for.
As for the woman with the baby, etc. She never should have brought the baby to that game. The sound levels from the crown alone would have been crazy. Poor parenting on her part even if everyone in the crown behaved.
If you are looking for a dull, well behaved game, go watch some shuffleboard.

If that had happened, someone might have died. It was definitely embarrassing though, it's one thing to be upset at the call (I certainly was at the time) but you can't throw crap on the field.
BTW, I thought this was the whole point of NOT having cans handed out at sporting events. What gives?

I'm going to disagree with you here. If you mean Bautista throwing the bat, or admiring his homer, I think it was perfectly fine. Given the emotions of the game, and that he'd struggled a bit, he's just letting it all out and I don't see anything wrong with it at all.
And if there hadn't been beer cans raining down from the upper deck, no one would be calling that mom a bad parent for bringing her baby along. Parents bring kids of all ages out to all kinds of events, and in some respects I respect them for it because if your kid isn't super fussy, you shouldn't have to change your life completely just because you have a kid. Yes it's an elimination playoff game, things might get rowdy, but you should be able to feel relatively safe bringing your baby along IMO.

Yes it's an elimination playoff game, things might get rowdy, but you should be able to feel relatively safe bringing your baby along IMO.
I wasn't referring to Bautista's actions. I was still talking about the fans still and throwing garbage. Bautista earned all of his celebration.
No need to try and justify the reason why items, beer cans, popcorn, etc shouldn't be thrown. They should never be. What I was saying is that people need to understand and realize that this could and WILL happen at a game of this magnatiude.
I don't think parents should completely change their lifestyle either but as a parent you should be aware enough to realize that this probably isn't the best time to attend your first baseball game. I would never bring a baby to any sporting event that was either an elimination game or a playoff game. Maybe a young child but definitely not a baby. It's common sense.
If their wasn't a woman and a baby, they wouldn't have been talked about either. The lady certainly didn't deserve any of that but people need to wake up and realize that this shit happens at EVERY sports event where a Toronto team advances. Toronto FC is another example. It was crazy there last night. I'm surprised someone didn't complain about having a baby there. lol

This is what I think cwp_sedan was referring to. Dyson got pissed with the bat flip. But how could he? His own teammate wiped his ass with a jays towel, which then the jays wiped their ass with him lol. Bautista deserved that. In my opinion he was the perfect person to win that series for him. He's been on that team for a long time and he's waited for a moment like this for a long time. And his reaction was perfect. The whole house erupted when he did. It was like something out of a book. And he cranked that ball. Dyson knew it was gone and I bet between him and Elvis they must just have died inside.
I don't agree with the fans throwing beer cans on the field but that was ridiculous but the right call. But it happened. And with 3 errors and a mis play we capitalized and showed why we were the leaders in Runs over the year. I can't wait to see the KC/TO showdown. It's going to be awesome and heated.
My dad had an opportunity to go to that game. He says afterwords "I seriously facked up"
GO JAYS GO!!!

I took my kid to a Jay's game when he was 6 months, he's also been to demo derbys for the last 2 years , because the call was correct does not give the right to dump and throw shat on the field , it's embarrassing that the fans did that because the umps actually made the right call , it wasn't even wrong that's my issue , get mad for a reason not because it was an error on Martin.
Why shouldn't I be able to bring my kid to a game ? If you plan on being that inebriated you shouldn't be in a public place in the first place. It doesn't matter what the age of the child was if anyone of you were sitting there with your kid , regardless if they are 6 months or 16 years , you as the parent are going to get pissed off, period.

Can you blame them though? Look at how much money Rogers made from all this. The least they could do is give some back. There was a guy on one of the sports group On Facebook I'm apart of who said if they put a 2 dollar price signing fee he would pay it. And personally so would I. I really look forward to seeing what they do. Because they have all the tools in place. They just have to do what they did and keep on going with it.

Tend to agree with Shapiro on this; AA traded away a lot of really good prospects. True, you have to give up something to get something, but not sure it worked well in many cases (especially the Dickey & Marlins trade). It is easy to second guess a trade two years later, so point taken to those who disagree with me. In any event, I see this as a positive step. AA did good, but also made lots of mistakes. If the Jays are to push it to the next level, a more seasoned GM is needed, in my opinion.

JB and EE are both gone once the contracts are done.
Price ain't sticking around either.
They want to be in the American spotlight, and unfortunately, MLB simply doesn't get Canadian love (in comparison) Nor do they make any money in Canadian broadcasting.
That's why we got stuck with the afternoon games during playoffs.

I don't know if I agree with you on that. Joey bats is loved out here and he loves it here. Same with Edwin. Maybe Edwin will leave but joey bats hopefully will be a lifetime jay. Plus look how close they got to the World Series. A few more pieces to the puzzle and we will have a World Series caliber team next year. At least they should keep Estrada and price if they can. That with stroman and dickey and someone else they can find in the off season we could be incredible. Plus imagine that offence the entire year compared to half of it.

It's more than a few pieces. It's resigning Price or getting another #1 pitcher, it's resigning Estrada or getting another quality pitcher, replacing Buehrle, it's replacing Lowe, and adding more to the bullpen.
A lot of work to be done.
Yes the hitters will be a great lineup, but need pitching.
Rogers dropped the ball.
Sad
Disagree. At the time Rogers was negotiating with Shapiro, they were a team around 500, and Alex A had mad one great trade(Donaldson), and some that had not worked out.
Had Alex A not been able to pull off all the deadline deals, and the Jays don't make the playoffs, or only make the wild card, replacing Alex A might have been the plan. So you wait until the end of the season and can't get the candidate you want.
To entice Shapiro to take the Jays job, they had to offer him final say on baseball matters.
I was a big fan of Alex A and the team he built, no reason to think Shapiro can't do a great job.

Both are loved for sure.
But all players will say they love it here - however, when comes down to it - $$$$ talks.
Truth is - players want the ring. And given the opportunity - will go to a team that can take them there
And in all honesty - it's not really up to any player if they stick to one team. Case in point - Look at what AA did for the Jays.

this is awful for the toronto blue jays. AA and bautista have been the heart of the team for the last 6 years. AA is a baseball guy whos passionate about the game, you cant buy that. hes constantly been working, scouting, calling, trying to make things happen. shapiro hasnt won anything. toronto was rated 2nd worst sporting city. cleveland, where shapiro was in charge for 10 years, was voted worst. why bring in a proven loser? losers lose and winners win. AA is a winner and shapiro is a loser, rogers bet on the wrong guy. he's a princeton history grad who knows how to talk the talk, and Supposedly oversaw stadium redevelopment and ticket pricing, while attendance plummeted to the point they removed seating to make a bar that provides non baseball income. hes going to be the president of baseball, taking over for beeston. the jays will still need a gm, who knows how much of that will be just be in name though.
AA helped take a team that was slighly behind the ball, to moved to slightly ahead of the ball, in all categories.
-he gave chances to bautista, and encarnacion to develop.
-traded for talent like buerle, and reyes when noone wanted to be here.
-got good players and character guys like dickey, martin, donaldson
-brought in good character guys like kawasaki and colabello.
-improved scouting and got guys from overseas including japan and australia. he even signed vladdy guerreros kid recently. whereas they jays werent even scouting outside north america and were trying to market matt stairs and cory koskie cause they were canadian.
-he drafted and developed stroman, sanchez, osuna, pillar, goins, and pompey. they all contribute at the major level and should for several years if they avoid injury and keep developing. and they all provide pitching and defense up the middle, which is a winning formula in my books. none of them were high draft picks and were developed. focused has changed to pitching with more pitchers being drafted than position players. in 2013 9 of the top 10 picks were pitchers.
the team is well put together with a mix of talent and character, across all ages. they could win now and in the future, and will keep drafting and developing. i think AA was right when he said he was getting better as a gm. its too bad he wont get to finish what he started. Anthopolous rejects Rogers contract after realizing it only comes with 150 long distance minutes
TORONTO - The Blue Jays have announced the departure of General Manager Alex Anthopolous due to a contract dispute in which Rogers was only able to promise him 150 long distance minutes.
“Are they kidding me with this shit?” said a clearly irate Anthopolous. “I bring them David [Price] and Troy [Tulowitzki] but they can’t even get me 300 outgoing minutes? Christ.”
The contract negotiations had been going well until a Rogers executive handed Anthopolous a pamphlet detailing their mobile plans and told him to “pick whatever he wanted, within reason”.
“I assumed the guy who single-handedly gave this city its most successful baseball team in over two decades would be worth a free iPhone upgrade,” said Anthopolous. “Apparently they don’t consider that ‘being a team player’.”
Anthopolous says initially he requested unlimited day-time minutes, which caused the assembled Rogers executives to burst into long, loud laughter before eventually realizing that the Blue Jays GM was being serious. Furious, Anthopolous then made an attempt to call his lawyer but couldn’t get reception.
“The worst part is they kept trying to give me Shomi,” said Anthopolous. “What the **** is Shomi? Is it Netflix? I already have Netflix!”
At press time, Anthopolous had been informed he would be charged a $400 cancellation fee for leaving the Blue Jays before winning a title.

Price went where the money went. It sucks but it is what it is. Now if they don't keep Jose and pay him what he deserves (guy took a pay cut to help the Jays out) and he should be rewarded with how good he has been since he started with the Jays. If they don't sign him you watch there will be rioting out front of the Rogers centre lol. I would be severely disappointed if he's anything else but a jay for the rest of his career.

Not just cost per year, but also length of contract. 30M for three or four years sure..seven years, no thanks. History shows these long term contracts for pitchers rarely work out. They are typically good for 3-4 years then they start to break down.
Case in point CC Sabathia.

I don't mind not being able to sign price...but not offering him at all sucks at all. Even 5 years I'll probably take it with the first 3 years in WS contention. Shows that Rogers has no interest in signing anyone big this offseason.
Yes the offseason just started but the Blue Jays haven't made any big signings to show the fans that they intend the win after a playoff run with big fan support and BIG REVENUES. It tells the fanbase that rogers isn't willing to spend the money to make it better and just hope to be good only.
