View Full Version : Non-adjustable coilovers

I'm new the whole suspension thing and I've been debating about doing a spring/strut/shock setup, or a coil-over setup. Then I got to thinkin, is there such a thing as a nonadjustable coil-over? I like the fact that a spring/strut/shock setup is a one time deal. I won't have to align it. On the other hand a coil-over has everything in one, not having to buy everything separate. Mine is a daily driver and I doubt I will ever take it on the track. Is this a stupid question?:bang

You don't have to adjust coils. But for cost reasons you'd be better off getting shocks/struts and springs.
It's essentially the same thing, you just can't adjust the hight.

You don't have to adjust coils.
True. But what's the point of having adjustables if you're not gonna utilize them?

There is no point. If you don't plan on using those settings, don't bother getting coils and get what peterm15 suggested - shocks/struts and springs setup

Thanks. I appreciate the feedback. But my real question is, is there such a thing as non-adjustable?

I did a search on Google and came onto this website http://www.speedwaymotors.com/search-non-adjustable-coilovers.html
Don't think I saw anything for Mazda 3's on there....

I'm not sure to be honest...the only coils I've ever heard of have either adjustable height, dampening, or both. Maybe someone with a little more knowledge on the subject can chime in with an answer for you.

Yes. Non adjustable is your front suspension.
Coilovers means coil ( spring) over shocks ( strut ). Most cars come with non adjustable Coilovers. Most shops also call it a quick strut.

Awesome! Thanks bro! Follow up question. Anyone ever used a quick strut before?
peterm15

Yes.
The only difference is they come pre-assembled with the spring attached to the strut. And usually cost double the price.
If your getting a shop to install DO NOT get a quick strut. Same cost as it takes 5 min to assemble them.
If your lowering I don't think a quick strut is an option. Just get springs and shocks/struts and get a shop to pop them together.

I dont really understand the shock/strut/spring method, like my shocks are dying and if i were to get it lowered i'd have to buy mostly everything brand new and it will cost me around 700-800 dollars, why wouldn't you just spend another like 200-300 and get coil overs? Am i missing something, cuz i would rather pay less and stay with non adjustable but the price difference is not that big.

For a decent set of coils you'll spend more then 1100.
If you plan to stay static going with good shocks and struts ( koni yellow/orange, kyb ( I think thats the name) ) and springs would cost you less.
You COULD also go with like a Monroe shock/strut and springs but I'm on coils so I don't know if that would be recommended.
Ultimately it's your decision, but $1100 coils are only going to be hight adjustable and not dampening. So for you useless. For the same cost you get shocks that you can adjust ride quality to your liking.
I hope I'm explaining well enough.

OK, another (stupid) question. What's dampening?
peterm15
11-20-2012, 11:31 PM
Basically Ride quality.
Stiffness or softness of the ride.
When you lower a car on stock shocks the ride will be stiffer then stock. Being able to adjust the dampening can bring your car closer to stock quality. Or you can make them stiff for better handling.

word. I never got this whole "raise for the winter" stuff
coilovers allow you to fine tune your suspension and leave it

For what its worth, I'm pulling the trigger this weekend on KW v2 coilovers used for ~15k for 900$. I don't want/need the adjustment factor, but they're apparently the best quality you can get on suspension, and what sealed the deal is when getting a quote for NEW koni yellows + prokit, the price was 200$ more.

As low as BC coils go with all of the rings in and on the 10k 135mm springs in the front, visually that is:

These are KW V2's about halfway down up front and the rear is max height (without spring perch spacer)

I'm about 3/4" lower now, don't plan on raising the car for winter.

On an angle.
Vmaxx. Wish they were lower

I'll be going lower next year. By about 3/4" ( taking out rear adjustment)
EDIT***
Realized that's an old picture. I'm lower than they. That was 1/2 way down in the rear. There isn't that much of a difference.
I'd like to be as low as Dave. But in my area, I still have to drive the car.

I consider my lip a wear-and-tear part haha. Scrapes every time I back out of my driveway.

Angle, but I also have a spare lip, but I have not had to use it.
Where do you live? I drive this car all over the place. Downtown, Markham, Milton, I've driven it with 3 people and 3 bikes inside even.
I also drive this height all year.

Heh. This is as low as I am going with the BCs. Lyndsey has tolerated this new height and spring rate but no more she says.

In a rural area, lots of dirt roads and stuff that I sometimes have no choice but to take.
But I also drive about 50k km a year just in my car, quite a bit of that with a 180lb dog in my back seat.
I COULD drop it that low. ( not with my current set up) But the cons of my area and driving havits outweigh the pros. There is already one road I take on a daily basis that I need to slow to a stop going over the bridge. But it cuts 10 min off my trip.
I am slightly lower then that picture. ( doesn't look like to much but it's half my rear adjustment).
At the time that was as low as I could go to get into my underground parking at lansdown and Dupont.
I don't know though. I have been itching to go lower and wider. Just been telling myself I shouldn't. Probably just making excuses. We will see next season how low I go.

Figured i'd not start a new thread and by reading, y'all know your stuff, So is there even a possible way to tuck on springs, or is coils the only option here?
Maybe not even tuck, but I'd like to get low.. REAL low.

You can take a hacksaw and cut your springs. Not recommended.
You can heat up your springs and make them sag. Also not recommended.
Notice the common trend?

Just save up and buy some used coils. If you want to go low, you WILL end up buying coils at least at some point

On a 2005 coils are about the only option. 1st-gen Eibach Sportlines on a 2nd-gen car get pretty low though.

^This, some don't get low at all.
When I got my BC's many moons ago they were higher than my sportlines.
