Hello all,

So I just purchased my Mazda a few months back and this is my first winter with this car. Anything I should be watching out for?

I've already started to notice a few things on the few days it was realy cold (around -5ish)

1) The brakes make a creaking noise as I backed out of the driveway. This continued for the first 4-6 braking cycles (creak only occurs when I depress the brake not when I press down on it)

2) Braking during initial 5 minutes in cold weather seemed a little extra sensitive. I would gently press on the brake and the car would literally stop abruptly. It was weird to say the least.

3) Road noise seems to have increased and a few new creaks have started up; although this could just be my mind playing tricks on me. Nothing major though.

4) It's using up gas way more quickly. I typically get around 580-600km on about 43-44L of fuel. My last fill up had 41L and I only managed ~500km.

Have any of you noticed any similar issues?

All normal...it will get worse as the weather gets colder but when it warms back up it will all go away.

The creaking brakes could be fixed with some anti-squeel.

I too noticed a slight decrease in mileage. Usually getting around 700-720. Dropped to about 680, Not too terrible. But all that you have mentioned is quite normal and will increase when the weather gets good again. Hope you have a good set of winter tires. Stay safe

You get 700+ on average? :O

How?!

I assume you have GS-Sky as well? Are you primarily a highway driver? Do you use premium gas? When do you fill up...when there's 1 bar left? Or do you wait for no bars?

Man that's amazing mileage, I used to get happy at 550.

Yes I own a skyactiv as well. For the most part it is mainly highway driving. Going to work from Pickering to markham at 11pm means no traffic so it's smooth sailing. Coming home I take steeles/Taunton as the highways are too jammed up. Usually stick to the speed limit as well

I usually fill up when the gas light comes on. Like I said in average I get 700kms. The most I've ever gotten was 765kms. That was straight going to work and home without going anywhere else for 2 weeks. I end up filling up twice a month

Manual or Auto? My guess is manual, real world consumption is much better despite what Mazda says.

fill up ur tires with nitrogen gas, it doesn't compress in the winter (cold).. and if u get a puncture it takes longer for the nitrogen to release out of the tire rather than gas leaks right away. nitrogen doesn't leak from the rim as well

Waste of money. Just check the pressure every so often.

And a puncture from a nail or screw ( most common ) will leak. At the same speed wether it be air or nitrogen.

Ahh nitrogen, scam of the century.

79% of our air is nitrogen.

The nitrogen machines do not put out PURE 100% nitrogen.(ive worked with 3 different nitrogen filling machines)

If you have a hole, nitrogen will not help you.

If you are looking to keep your million dollar race cars pressure from skyrocketing when the brakes are glowing red hot almost melting the bead on the tire from continuous 190MPH braking zones, THEN MAYBE PURE nitrogen GAS will help you out.

And most dealers "top up" with air anyways...waste of $ completely

Just one of those "makes me feel better for no reason" things

The placebo effect of nitrogen vs. regular air :chuckle

Looks great from a numbers perspective, but this is the kind of activity that wears out fuel pumps faster over time. ;)

It's filled up just as the gas light comes on. I never push it. That 765 came on as I was leaving work that morning at warden/hwy7 and stopped off at the local gas station by kennedy/hwy7. If I had driven home to Pickering I would have hit at least 800kms or so

Considering I have not heard of a single person having fuel pump issues in their N/A 3s, I wouldn't worry so much in that regard.

I'm going to set up a "nitrogen-enriched air" bar and make a killing.
