View Full Version : Parking lot fun in the snow?

asyed

Been researching a bit but cant seem to find any clear answers....
so here are my questions

1) is practicing "skid control" ok in a parking lot, if it is 2 in the morning and the parking lot has no obstacles ( i.e shopping cart return areas/ lightpoles/other cars / other people)???
2) any good places to practice this behaviour in a safe enviroment ( without the obstacles mentioned above) near bradford/newmarket????

And no I wont be speeding excessively or doing other stuff that typical teenagers do... I just want to practice how my car reacts to snow and how to control it ( First winter with my 3)

Thanks

1 - Use your best judgement.
2 - GO stations would be a good bet.

Aren't there like, random fields in Bradford where you could go slide around?

Because parking lots are private property, the HTA does not apply. However, the owner has every right to kick you off the property, and you may be slapped with trespassing. If it's 2AM, who's going to care/know?

Use your best judgement.

I do not have any contacts with any of the farmers here and I do not think they would say yes if i asked... :chuckle

as for Go stations...never thought of that.... Although I will have to see if there are any lamp posts in the way....

And yes I will use my judgement and will practice at relatively low speeds....(enough to get the car into a skid but not enough to lose control completely and slide 50 feet)

i got in trouble for practicing winter control last year....spun around and bam....2 cruisers blocking the only exit in/out.... had to explain i just got the car and its my first winter driving, and that i wanted to learn the limits of my car. in the end they let me go with a warning.

in my opinion, every one needs to learn the limits of theyre vehicle. i dont like how people will drive without knowing the limits. and when the time comes, they got no idea what to do.

Did they say anything... I have heard stories where some cops would be complete *******s and some cops will be like " go ahead but be careful and the property owner isnt liable for damages"

Hitting a lamp post at the GO station should be about as hard as scoring a basketball into a golf hole for the average person, but hey, make sure to take pictures if you do ;)

cops are people too, and people have good and bad days. any damages will be recorded and the footage will be used if camera's are on site. you can either pay for the damages or they will charge you with damage to private property. if theyre nice and it doesnt cost much...they MIGHT (rarely) let you off....but dont count on it.

just play it safe and take it easy. dont go recreating any scenes from tokyo drift

And how much trouble did you end up getting in?

lol yea pretty much. but just having the cops talk to u is already trouble if you dont say or do the right things.

also...another dumb question....what is a good speed to not go over in a medium sized parking lot ( like go station) so that I dont end up sliding off the parking lot/ into a light post???

work your way up, gradually increase you speed as you get comfortable

Done it lots of times but have had a few run ins with police and was always asked to leave after some questioning and a couple times searches.

Don't knock over a pole, they are expensive and you'll be paying for it forever.

If there was say footage of someone wrecklessly driving in a lot and doing repeated maneuvers, I could see an insurance company saying that the damage was deliberate or it was racing. They'd still likely cover what you wreck but maybe not your car.

There are closed course type places where you can pay to do this as well as actual courses in your own car with instructors

never heard of any closed circuts in my area for this.... and the winter driving programs require you to sit through 2 hours of inclass first and costs $$$.... id rather learn with my dad...for free...and have fun doing it.....
Im just worried that Ill get fined or something since the majority of cops in bradford are the strict on the rules " wil find an excuse to pull you over" type :|

If you're going with your dad, than he should know what's up.
True there is an in class portion and if you haven't say through any, I recommend it.

It's always nice to know the proper way to do things

Take it south of 9.
Simco cops are the worst for giving people warnings. They don't do it and the courts won't give you a break either.

You could always say your dad is teaching how to control your can if you slip. But chances are simco cops won't care. York is WAY more likely to just send you packing and say be careful.

There is a church at canal rd and 5th. Could be a good place. Still in simco but pretty quite especially with the bridge shut down.

just go take a driver's training course somewhere

if not the next thread we read from you will be

"hit light standard in GO station and f****ed up my car...fml"

"can the insurance company really not cover my car if I f**** it up in a GO station"

"The OPP just tasered me for practicing car control on GO station, can I sue them?"

good rule of thumb, if you have to ask, it's probably not a good idea or somewhat illegal.

Simcoe area OPP aren't that bad...I know a bunch of them and have had quite a number of experiences with them and usually never have much of an issue with them. The ones you have to watch out for though are the South Simcoe Police they are the ones that have nothing better to do than give people tickets. (But try finding one cruising around after 10:30pm) I challenge you!

But again your experience with police is all in your attitude and how you talk to them. They are people too and usually if you aren't doing anything super illegal or stupid will listen to an honest answer or explanation and give you the benefit of doubt. If you treat them with respect and don't give them lip they will usually treat you the same.

just come to brampton and pratice on normal roads during rush hour....no one will tell you're driving like an idiot, you'll blend right in!

shitty thing about FWD is when you lock up and start to slide, all you can do is just hang on for the ride lol
remember to brake, then steer....avoid doing both at the same time haha

i'm always scared waiting at the light and to the left of me are cars barelling down the hill, braking and making right hand turns in the snow, i'm afraid they'll slide right into me and hit me wating for the light to change

Lol that's why you don't lock up your wheels...if you need to stop quickly in the winter yank your E brake locks up your rear tires while still allowing you to steer. I do that all the time up north and I can stop almost immediately without snows...

I disagree. Your priority is always to steer your car.

edit: I see what you mean there about braking/steering at different times.

My buddy and I were doing donuts once and a OPP came over to us and told us stop...he then told us to go to the Belleville arena parking lot as there is a lot more room and we won't hit anything lol...

when my front wheels start to slide. i steer it to a direction i want and floor it to 4000rpm . ive already lost traction and there isnt time to regain it. i just let the power drag me towards the direction i want. so far its %100 of the time for me. but theres probably other better ways. you always see people who lock up, let ABS take over and then let things happen... of course you guess what happens.

tip i can give you:
stay calm (life happens, but you can take control)
do not over react (last thing you want is to snap over into the on coming lane)
know the limit of the car and tires. (always account for added and reduced weight thats in the car)

thats awsome, wish we had more cops like these. actually protecting and serving

lol? so instead of correcting a loss of front wheel traction you make it worse? that scenario was on Canada's Worst Driver once; a slide straight forward. let it slide to scrub off speed, release brake and steer. Saved me on 2 separate occasions.

Anyway, I see an imminent thread hijack so let's leave the car control discussion for another thread/pm/meet.

Ya.....south simcoe poloce really have nothing better to do. They just drive around my neighborhood and tail you waiting for something to happen.....Is Newmarket a safe bet since its more populated and more spread put that cops actually have something to do????

Also Loki..... I would take it to a controlled environment if I had the money....but that $200 would rather go to car payments. And I dont think my dad will let me crash as he has done this before with my brother.....and he has gotten out of numerous skids....except for one in which he ended up doing a 360 in the middle of the 401 om a deserted stretch :P

I would think Newmarket would be ok there are lots of places to go at night. I mean uppercanada mall will be abandoned but I think they have security who could ask you to leave...if they do you move on...north up Yonge street. The silvercity theater, the real canadian superstore area there, Lowes all those parking lots are probably pretty open and deserted at 2am. Plus I have never really seen South Simcoe Police in Newmarket before. It's usually just OPP.

same here. this was back when i lived in burlington, and the cop said to go to a more empty parking lot, or back roads where i wont cause harm to anyone.
i drive like a douche whenever there's snow on the ground, and ive never had anyone complain about it, nor have i ever been in trouble because of it.

Flooring it is a great idea for doing donuts in a parking lot, but it is a terrible idea if you've lost traction on the front as you have a lot less chance of getting that traction back.

If you have traction control (will prevent you from 'flooring it' and screwing yourself), always leave that on when you're driving on the road, only turn it off when you intentionally want to slide.
