How To: Replace Purge Solenoid Valve (Gen1)

Here's a guide to replacing a purge solenoid valve (04-09 Mazda 3).

Correct part number is LF66-18-74X:

Step 1: Disconnect negative terminal of battery:

Step 2: Disconnect the wire clip from the solenoid valve:

Step 3: Disconnect this fitting near the firewall with the quick-release connector:

Step 4: Disconnect this fitting from the front of the engine:

Step 5: Slide the solenoid valve towards the front of the car to release it from the rubber fitting that holds it in place:

Step 6: Loosen the hose clamp connecting the line from the firewall to the solenoid valve, and remove old valve (which remains connected to the front line).

Step 7: Connect quick-release clamp of new front line to the front of engine (simply snaps on).

Step 8: Reconnect the rear line to the new solenoid valve and tighten hose clamp. Make sure the raised line of plastic on the valve is lined up with the marked line on the rear hose, and slide the solenoid valve back into the rubber fitting:

Step 9: Snap rear line back onto the fitting coming from the firewall.

Step 10: Reconnect wire clip and battery cable:

Step 11: Done!

Step 12: Don't forget to remove this plug from the new front line before trying to connect it :

I got a CEL code of P2187 and had occasional hard cranking starts after filling up with gas. Those were a few symptoms.

I'm get the same code, P2187, in the winter when it's below freezing. After some highway driving, when I come to a red light, my car starts idling really rough and the rpms drop to just under 500. At that point, one of 2 things happen: Either the engine revs on it's own to prevent stalling, or it stalls and gives me that CEL. Where you experiencing similar symptoms?

I've tried cleaning the MAF, cleaning the throttle body, replaced the O2 sensor, reset the ECU each time, did the whole idle and throttle position relearning procedures, nothing worked. At that point it was summer again and the problem magically went away but it started acting up again that it's getting cold. Someone suggested that it could be my EGR valve causing the trouble so last weekend, I replaced it (what a pain in the a$$ that was to do). I'm only at about 60km driven since and it's warm this week so can't tell if it solved my issue or if I'll need to try something else.

Is it almost the same for Gen 2? Just recently after a short drive.. when I turn my car back on.. It cranks a little longer and when the engine starts.. it's like as if the battery is dying or something. :S I had asked this before in a different forum and was told that it could be the PSV.. :S
