Like the title mentions, I will be getting the lovely wife an iPad for her birthday - debating on whether or not I need one with 3G/LTE capabilities.
Only place where it MAY come in handy is at our cottage where there is no wireless or high speed internet (but very good cell service).

So I can link up through my cell phone when needed for email and light browsing, or get an iPad with cellular capabilities.

I'm leaning towards no cellular and using wifi/bluetooth to connect when needed as I do now with my laptop.

I have an iPad with no cellular service. I just tether with my phone. Works like a charm. I didn't see the value of getting an iPad with a data plan when I already have 6GB worth of data that I can use.

That's just me me though. Is there a poll? I'm on my phone so I probably can't see it.

Don't get the LTE if you have an iPhone already, just tether the iPad to your iPhone. Do it all the time.

Thanks, I was reading that some folks have to enable tethering on their plans? I have already used the personal hotspot with my Telus plan on my laptop so I assume it'll work just as easily with an iPad (BTW our phones are currently locked - as in no jailbreak - yet).

Wifi only here.

I think you need to have at least a 1GB data plan to be able to tether. For the most part it works really well.

I went from a generation 1 32GB iPad with cellular service to a generation 4 32GB wifi only iPad that I simply tether to my iPhone 5.

Got the mini iPad with no data plan. I already have an iPhone plan with 6gb so I just use the hotspot.

Wifi only.

Rogers (or other carrier) says you can share the 6GB of data, but it will cost you $10 extra a month just to add the additional device to your data plan. Wireless hotspot works like a charm.

Save yourself the $100. Buy her earrings to go with the iPad.

Hotspot works pretty much flawlessly.

I don't own an iPad but we have a few at the shop and tested the wifi hotspot vs cellular, there was no noticeable difference.

If you can set up a hotspot, I'd say save the $$ and use it for a battery pack that can power either or both.

If you need cell and your phone dies, you're kind of screwed.

(Futureshop / Bestbuy have them for $50 off until Sunday - wife bday tomorrow!)
