Looking for some advice :)

I am looking to let go of my Olympus e-620 with its kit lenses and jump to a more feature filled dslr.

I am looking at the d3200 or the t4i. There is a $100 price difference on the sale that I am going to try and use. http://www.blacks.ca/imgs/data/TELUSFamilyFriends.pdf

My e-620 is nice and small and has a flip out screen already. I would like to keep both options but the 3200 does not have it.

I want HD Video , having our first child this summer and I would like to be able to tape some decent stuff.

My dad has a T3 with 2 telephoto lenses and the one is awesome, something I could look at getting from him later down the road.

The reason I am looking to upgrade is the $$ that glass cost for Olympus is insane and hard to find used..It seems there is more support for Nikon or Canon, they both have lots of lenses available on kijiji.

I was offered $250 for my camera + my xmas money I would only be paying $260 of my own cash for the t4i, and less for the 3200 obviously.

I will be looking at adding another lens (telephoto/zoom) to the 18-55 lens that both come with down the road.

Help me decide!

Just got a Nikon D5100 from blacks. The kit was $519 plus tax!

Here is a comparison between the 3 http://www.dpreview.com/products/compare/side-by-side?products=canon_eos600d&products=nikon_d3100&products=nikon_d5100

The differences between the t3i and the d5100 are minimal, Id go with the d5100, But I have a d7000, So I'm kinda bias. When choosing a camera system the most important thing is lenses, Nikon hasn't changed their lens mount in a long time so there are more options for lenses, pretty much every lens after 1977, this gives you more options and you can buy older ones for cheaper. Canon is more poplar and sells more cameras then Nikon, But I feel that's more to do with people trying to be trendy, and buying what their friends or family have then an actual difference in quality or specs.

There's always lens adapters you can use if you do video only.

Anyway, Canon has a cool pancake lens that came out recently and it looks like a body cap.

Trendy? Not entirely true. Canon was successful in HD video. Codec was a big part of it as Canon had h.264; read link below
http://photofocus.com/2010/01/14/why-nikon-as-video-cam-doesnt-stand-up-to-canon-as-video-cam/

People who've owned Canons will say Canon.
People who've owned Nikons will say Nikon.

I own a Canon, therefore it's more likely I'd say to get a Canon.

However, I'm going to steer away from saying that (but I already did) and ask yourself how many lenses are you going to be purchasing and if you're going to be doing a lot of shooting (video and photo).

If you're thinking of doing a lot of video, Canon's codecs are much better.
As previously stated before about the pancake lens (40 2.8), it's a sweet lens. You can carry your kid with one hand and shoot him in the face with the other hand holding the camera.

I'd recommend the 40 2.8 because it's really light and small so you can get close ups or even back up a lot and get some more things in your frame.

Your greater advantage you have said was that your dad has 2 telephoto lenses from Canon.
If you're trying to save money and get the Nikon, your only disadvantage is not being able to have extra lenses for awhile.
ORR You can be broke, and enjoy your new Canon camera and use your dad's lenses as you wish.

I accidentally put the 3100 in the comparison chart, but the D3200 uses H.264 now too, as does D5200, but not 5100.

40mm with the crop factor of 1.6x would be 64mm, wouldn't that be kinda tight to take pictures of a baby in your arms?

Well I was up until 3am reading reviews on dpreview, and I think I am leaning towards the d5100 kit @ bestbuy for $549
+Comes with a external flash
+comes with the 55-200 lens which is better then no zoom for now.
+$70+tax cheaper then a t4i, and has a lot of the same features.

Need to find one however, Burlington is out, so I am off to Mississauga soon.

I'm biased towards nikon, but those are both pretty decent entry-level cameras and you're going to enjoy either one of them. Much as I'd like to recommend the Nikon, you might be better off going with the Canon simply because you mentioned your dad has some lenses. Glass is always the most expensive part of your kit and having friends / family to borrow from is always a huge benefit. good luck and let us know what you go with!

the 50-200 will cover you pretty good, you can pick up 18-55mm pretty cheap since they come with a lot of kits and people sell them when they upgrade to better glass. Unless you plan on doing nature photography, I don't really see you needing more the 200mm.

IMO the T4i with the 18-135mm STM is a well rounded combo. STM lens for smooth AF during video and a nice range too. If buying the lens separately it'll be $600+ just for the lens. Kit is about $799 isn. Saves the hassle of changing lenses and carrying extra ones with you.

T4i bundle. Fast processor (faster than 3i). Touchscreen. Great prices on lenses and your Dad has lenses. Nuff said. (Both seem great though - but if it were up to me I'd go with the T4i).

I would like to stress getting the 18-135 kit OVER the 18-55 ones.

With either camera you can't go wrong. Personally I am moving from Canon to Nikon in 2013. You might want to go with what a majority of family and friends have to make swapping lenses that much easier if you want to try them out.

I mentioned this to Default User at FB - I recommended D3200 for my sister. It's running ex speed 3 processor (most current), hd video with live af (d5100, d90 or d3100 doesn't have that), and 24mp all jam packed in a consumer body. I've tried it with her kit lens and it shoots stunning photos. Just add an external flash and shoot away. btw, I also switched camp from canon to Nikon.

So my pros/cons are;

T4i
-noisy focus when doing video
-higher price
+HD Video - H.264
+tons of resolutions
+19MP
+Articulating LCD
-bundle only includes 18-55

D3200
+Cheaper
+Newer - Announced this year.
+24MP sensor
-static LCD screen
-bundle only includes 18-55
+HD Video - H.264

D5100
+Articulating screen
+18-55mm + 55-200mm included in kit
+External Flash included in kit
+Reviews say better for low light.
++Cheaper if I can find the #$%@#$ instock.

After considering my dads lenses and the fact that he lives 2.5hours away I guess I shouldn'y base the purchase on the fact my dad has a Canon.

I am pretty sure he has old Nikon manual lenses I could use/borrow (He has done photography for 40years)

I am really swaying toward the 5100 kit, I could save some coin up and look at a nice prime lens then, and it has an external flash already. A lot of the extra features on the 5100 are really nice as well.

After reading on RFD it seems the d5100 kit Best BUy had for $549 is a complete joke.

If you're looking at price comparisons for cameras, go to photoprice.ca

Well,

http://i1113.photobucket.com/albums/k512/jblaggy/3C0551A2-D8FB-4F22-BF30-109E392E301F-4112-0000037963A5CD71.jpg

Price matched it at FS for $599 from http://www.bccamera.com/Canon-EOS-Rebel-T4i-w-EF-S-18-55-IS-II-Kit.html

64Gig Memory Class 10 for $32

Had to go to Stoney Creek , Burlington was OOS, Blacks was OOS for everywhere around (also on for $599) , so made the trek over the skyway. The CSR was nice , I was poliet, he said he would price match it (from $649 on sale) if I was going to buy something else, so I got the memory card for free in the end.

Think I made the right choice, now to test it out in North Bay this weekend...and hunt for accessories on ebay.

Thanks all for the info.

The video difference and from using my dads T3.

I actually went to Futureshop in hopes to pricematch Broadway Cameras sale for $599, they had none in stock by Stoney Creek did so we crossed the skyway and ended up getting the PM as long as I bought something else, so I grabbed a 64gig Class 10 card that I needed anyways.

Blacks was sold out all around.

So far this is kicking my Olympus dslr and I havent even taken 100 pics.

Heading to North Bay for the new year tomorrow so I should make some good use of it :)
