I know there are a few of us around here with rug rats cluttering up our abodes now. Post all your random thoughts, questions, and rants here - and hopefully get some support too! :)
Let's start with this - our guy has been yakking up lots of food recently (sensitive gag reflex) and while his chair was getting cleaned we had nowhere to sit him yesterday. So, diaper box + toys. Seemed happy.

What age did you start start your baby with food? What did you first feed your baby? Seems like there are lots of ready made foods out there (or did you or your wife make something?).
Cute picture btw!

We started doing solids around 5 months I think but he kept showing skin reactions to it so we were constantly backing off. Now he's 8mo and getting about 1tbs of 1st-stage solids 3 times a day with formula. He's been formula-fed since the first couple of weeks - wasn't getting enough breastmilk.
We do make some of our own but also use the Heinz pureed foods. Some taste awful though and he doesn't like those. When we were in Florida we found Gerber organic stuff and he really liked that, but they don't seem to have the same stuff here. Just things like prunes, pears, sweet potato, peas, carrots etc so far.

My son has always ate whatever my wife and I are eating, of course we mashed it up though. He was a bit strange as an infant though, never liked warm bottles, hated the whole swaddling thing, it was like he was born a year old already lol.

Very cute kids everyone!
I wanted to ask the Dad and Mom club of TM3 about newborns. Not my own, I'm not married yet. I wanted to put together some sort of care/gift package for my gf's sister who is due this summer.
What are some things the family would need within the first month or week of having a newborn (can be for the parents or for the newborn, more for the kid)? This would be the first child so everyone is super excited. So far I have a super soft baby blanket. I guess I could give this gift package as part of the baby shower.
Thanks in advance.

diapers - formula - diapers....
One of the best gifts we got was a baby-wipe warmer.
If it's their first child, chances are - they are all set for supplies, clothes, etc. So the best gift could be something for the parents-to-be, Like date night certificates for Dinner and a movie, or even a Salon gift certificate for the mom-to-be (pre-paid manicure/pedicure)

^^ Sleepers, diaper genie, diapers (pampers are best imo), receiving blankets, changing station, swaddle me sleeper, waterproof sheet (on one side), wipes, What to Expect in your First Year book (too many to list).
Also you should ask if they have a registry.

Not so much. Lol.
I was volunteered by my GF ( with her help) to babysit once. Worst 6 hrs of mu life. After that any time she volunteered I went to the bar.
Although the child was colicky (sp*)
Edit*
Btw it is probably the best thing you can do for parents. Just make sure you meet the child a few times first.
you beat me to it Aitch! but ya, the best gifts i received were a diaper genie and a thermoscan ear thermometer. you'll definately use the diaper genie everyday for a new-born for a couple of years. it might not seem like you put alot of thought into it but gift cards are good because of certain items they might need down the road and also a new mom will be super picky for what she wants for her child. on the side, make sure the parents see you wash your hands before you touch the baby =]

I'd suggest diapers, wipes, and/or frozen homemade meals. Of course, I wouldn't give them the frozen homemade meals until the baby is born. They will be so glad when it's time to eat and all they have to do is throw something in the microwave or oven and BAM. Homemade meal.

I'm wondering how you guys are dealing with the car seat situation. My little guy is almost a year old now and he's grown out of his rear facing Graco Snugride 35. We bought a Safety 1st dual (rear or front facing) car seat for 30lbs to 65lbs.
The problem is there is no way I can set it up rear facing cuz the rear is too small. Right now its set up as front facing (which he is loving it!) but officially due to his age/weight, he's supposed to rear facing still.
It still blows my mind to see my little guy in a front facing car seat...time flies!

one of the reasons I had to get a larger vehicle
(you probably already did) but have you tried behind the passenger seat - with the front seat pulled all the way up?
Most likely, Wifey would have to sit in the back seat though.

FYI, you are not allowed to import car seats from other countries because they don't adhere to the Canadian safety regulations.

That's my plan for my upcoming vehicle purchase (my lease is up early July).
In my car (a Kia Soul) I have the car seat rear facing behind the passenger seat with it almost fully forward...it's a tight fit for my wife but she can manage because she's short. In her car, we put the car seat behind the driver seat so I could fit in the passenger seat. When our son was still in the bucket carrier I had to sit in the back of my wifes car as she was adamant about it being behind the passenger seat at that time.

I have something similar to this. Mine is Safety 1st but I can't remember which model. If the size is similar then your front passenger seat will be right at the dash and will be unusable. There won't be much room for bags either. Don't forget to get some foam swimming noodles because the seat probably won't be leveled until you put about 3 pieces of noodles under the front end of the car seat. I got my swimming noodles from Canadian Tire.

Hey thanks for the tip about the foam noodles. I'll install it soon. I saw a video on the install of these larger rear facing car seats and they take up lots of space. My wife sits in the back with the baby so the loss of the front passenger seat isn't a problem. I'll be losing my sub in the trunk too for the stroller lol.

a few starter tips for new parents I found that are sometimes overlooked...
Expecting? Time to start planning financially. Having 1 person not working can be hard. Try to live on 1 income, and bank as much of the rest as you can as a 'reserve fund'. Also try to pay down some of your debt as well. Yes, there's EI maternity benefits, but if you can get in the habit of scaling back and getting used to living on less income, once baby comes money will be 1 less thing to worry about! You'll have some hefty savings to pull from when you need to cover expenses as they arise.
Babies don't need much for the first few months. They need a place to sleep, some clothes, some food and diapers/wipes. Don't worry to go out and buy everything right now - you'll probably get a LOT of items as baby shower gifts from family and friends. You don't need to get every single item ready before the baby comes.
Like weddings, babies are HUGE industry. If you haven't noticed all the marketing, hype and hoopla around baby products...you will now. Resist the urge to go ape shit and buy super expensive items and other stuff you probably will never use. Also, people like to compare and compete on who has 'the best', don't keep up with the jonses. Your kids will suck Money out of you for the rest of thier lives, spread out the pain as much as possible! (read that: more $$ on baby = less $$ for MODS, which you should have done to your car already haha)
Visitors? Take a number. Talk with your wife and agree upon how you will handle visitors once baby gets home. Everyone's going to want to come over. People's intentions are good and they are super excited to see baby - but it can be overwhelming the first few days/weeks taking care of mom, baby and having to entertain people. Yes, you can't tell immidiate family to scram, but politely asking friends to give you a week or two before coming over is all it takes to lessen your stress, and give you more time to spend with baby.
There's no right or wrong Everyone will give you advice on how to take care of your baby. End of the day, it's you and your wife. As long as you two are on the same page, things will be fine. Read all the books and google until the cows come home, every baby is different and as a first-time parent, of course you'll worry and stress out about things. Just try to keep a cool level head (I know, easier said than done).
You are no longer #1. Get over it. Baby comes, you get knocked down pretty far down the list of important people LOL. Your job is now more of a support/errand boy than a husband, so don't get butthurt when your wife doesn't even know you're in the room. Now's not the time to be petty over stupid shit that doesn't matter. Don't worry, after a few months your wife will notice your existence.
Even though you're not #1, you have people by your side. Family and friends will certainly offer to lend a hand, don't be afraid to take them up on the offer. It can be simple as having your mom come over and cook some food for you guys while you take care of baby, or get some rest. Accept the help from others - but make sure to remember to return the favor later down the road and help them when they need it!!
You'll be surprised the things you can do with no Sleep. Like many others have said, get your sleep in now while you can! LOL

Not so much. Lol.
I was volunteered by my GF ( with her help) to babysit once. Worst 6 hrs of mu life. After that any time she volunteered I went to the bar.
Me tooooo.... I looked after my 3 & 4 year old niece and nephew last weekend and it was the worst 4 hours of my entire life as well. I was counting down the minutes until the nightmare was finally over. Brutal!!! If you don't like kids don't volunteer to babysit. You'll regret every second of it hahaha

I felt the same way when I babysat my sister's baby a couple of years ago. She expected me to have some bonding time with him but I said I didn't really enjoy it and she was pissed. Lol. But seriously it's totally different when they are your own kids. I can't wait to get home from work and hold her and see her smile.

For all those asking about car seat installs, check with your local police and or fire department if they do it, they usually hold a car seat install once a month. 55 division does this at the Canadian tire at Lakehore and lesie every other Saturday but you have to make an appointment.

It's flu season. And this year is especially bad.
BE SURE TO PROTECT YOUR FAMILY!
I caught the flu bug and I'll tell you first hand how scary it is to think "what if the baby catches it?"
I've been quarantined in my own home for the past few days as if it was H1N1.

My wife and I have decided not to have children. However, after watching my 5 nieces grow up, I am consistently amazed and floored at how cute and adorable kids are and how neat it is to watch them grow and learn.
Tons of great kids in this thread! Props to all those who have taken on the role of parents. I see what my brother goes through on a daily basis and I have so much more respect for him now. Well done all!

So yesterday my wife decided out of the blue (at least to me) that she wanted to take our son on vacation to Sri Lanka when her parents go back there in a month. And although I'll miss them both, my first thought was OMG I'M GOING TO GET SO MUCH DONE.
Sleep.
Actually clean the apartment properly.
Clean out storage locker.
Install stuffs.
Socialize.
Then after reserving the flight with our travel agent she realized how crazy it would be dealing with a teething, fussy 10-month old essentially by herself on 2 ten-hour flights, when I am by far the more patient of us with him. Now the plan is dead.
Oh well. It was an exciting 5 hours.

We had this discussion too. My wife wanted to go back to Japan for a visit so my in-laws could meet him. She was planning to go back with my mother in law at the end of her visit and then I'd go to Japan and meet up with her and then fly back together. No go. She thought that it would be too hard to deal with a crying baby for a 12-14 hour flight. So we're probably going to Niagara Falls and Ottawa this summer. Lol.
I was thinking (although I'd miss my little princess) I could catch up on movies, socialize and play tons of tennis while she was away. Yup.

That was part of the plan. But her dad has a broken wrist, and her mom isn't that great at calming the kid down. Plus then in Sri Lanka we're worried about malaria and dengue from mosquito bites, the places she's going won't likely have nets on all the windows.

Hi Moms and Dads.
I already have an audio monitor for my baby's room but my wife and I wanted a video monitor so we could check on our 7 month old baby without waking her. Also she has recently learned to roll over on her belly. I did some research and found some good baby video monitors which ranged from $170 to $400 then I decided to check if there was an app for that. So I found a well-reviewed one for $3.99, decided to try it and it worked well. All you need are two iphones or ipads (or in my case a mini ipad and iphone). I was rarely using the mini ipad anyway so I decided to use it as the video camera. It works through wifi and BT if wifi is not available.
Anyway here's the app. You can set up call alerts. You set one as the child unit and the other as the parent unit.
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8376/8545364340_5eaf685431.jpg
This is the parent unit view on my iphone. Since the video camera does not have night vision it turns the screen white with a press of a button and you can see the baby clearly. You can also play music for the baby or talk to the baby through your phone. Here's a pic of the video through your phone. The camera is set a bit crooked.

Another similar app/device is using network cameras.
I presently use a DLink network cam, Actually i have 4 around the house to monitor our dog when we are away.
http://www.dlink.com/ca/en/home-solutions/view/network-cameras/dcs-932l-day-night-cloud-camera
You can still access it via a mobile device, or a comp. Plus the camera's a relatively cheaper about 100 a pop.

This was timely because last night she flipped on her stomach for the first time and she had her face planted in the mattress. We saw this on the video and went in and flipped her over. I am pretty sure she would have been ok but it was nice to know why she was crying.

I was resistant to installing a baby cam (we use a Foscam unit) because I didn't see the point. But it really is useful to see what he is up to, whether he actually needs attention or can just be left to cry it out etc.
On a tangent - at Christmas was the first time we started letting our guy sleep with both arms out, not just one (~7.5months); before that with both his arms out he would startle himself awake and not go back to sleep. The very first time I put him down on his back, he just flipped right to his stomach and went to sleep and I'm like "well so much for trying to keep him on his back" (i.e. to avoid SIDS). Has slept on his stomach ever since.

My son is 14 months and we just had our first experience with the virus called Roseola. He was feverish for a few days and then once the fever broke he developed a rash almost instantly which made us think he was having an allergic reaction to something. Not fun especially since I was caring for him that day, since he was home from daycare, and he broke out into the rash literally just as my wife walked in the door from work.

Sleep is now a figure of imagination, its amazing what your'e body can do all of a sudden, my wife was up a solid 24hours by the time we got to our private room and is going on 4 hours sleep since then.
I took my T4i in with me and my 50mm slapped on and it did in awesome job, I was shooting some pics @ 1600 ISO and cannot believe how well the camera did and how clear they look even printed out. 48hours old and over 120 pics of the bugger already.

Hey All, we are expecting our first little one soon. A bit overwhelmed in searching for a car seat and stroller. Someone recommended to me Britax B-Agile travel system. Has anyone else used a travel system like this?

09-08-2013, 06:33 PM
We had that one. A bit pricey but it was very high quality. The seat will fit in the backseat of a 3 ok, with the front seat moved up just a bit. Stroller folds nice and flat, and fits great in the hatch.
The straps all snap together easily, and also release easily which some systems fall short.

We bought the Graco seat & stroller, great unit, but the seat is big in the back, doesn't fit well in a 3, we ended up getting a SUV for the wife and the baby.

We have the b-agile stroller and b-safe car seat and we LOVE it. The b-safe seat does take up room and we had to move the front passenger seat up. We're not skinny people so the wife had to sit in the back with the baby which wasn't an issue.
Our son has outgrown the infant carrier and is now in a Britax Marathon car seat that is rear facing. That seat fits better and allows more room for front seat passenger.
The stroller folds flat is is very compact, it literally only took up 1/4 of the trunk of my wife's sedan. We are still able to put groceries, and even a mid-sized suit case for weekend trips.
Many people buy more fancy expensive strollers, but when folded they take up the entire trunk rendering it useless.
We're trying our very best to not be forced into buying another vehicle, but for some I can see where there is no other option.
I needed space in the trunk one day, so with no wife or baby, I just slipped in the stroller behind the front seat.
I didn't realize before, otherwise I would have just left it at home haha

We are currently using this set - (Greco Chadwick) http://www.toysrus.ca/product/index.jsp?productId=12066605
We got it on sale for $179 so it was some decent savings. We also picked up an extra seat base so we have one in each vehicle for ease.
The stroller goes pretty compact, however even in the box of my truck its tight to my tonneau cover, and its a slim fit into the trunk of the wifes Kia Spectra. It sits a decent height when folded.
r4BBiT
09-09-2013, 05:16 PM
Nice, we are using Eddie Bauer Pilot travel system, we bought it mostly because of the compact size. The folded stroller fits into 3's trunk on one side so like rajin929 said you can actually put luggage in there. Good luck doing that with any Graco model (time for SUV)! lol
The downsides of the stroller are the wheel material sucks and the wheels don't turn very well on slick surfaces, like tiles. It is a workout in the grocery store or mall. The second thing are brakes, which fell apart in two weeks and they are sending us new parts.
The car seat is great though. We use two bases so it's very convenient that way.

Who else knows of any "Price Match" stores?
Often this stuff (ie. diapers, formula, etc) go on sale - but it seems I'm the always the last to know - and they're all gone before I get there.
I actually used a FoodBasic price match at WalMart - and saved $10-12 on a Mega case of diapers.
So if I can get another store to price match WalMart - I'll be golden

Yeah. It's just when diapers go on sale - the size my kid needs is always sold out.
When they're reg price - they have a dozen cases just sittin there.
So with stores that Price Match advertised sales - I have the advantage of a surprise attack blitz and stock up LOL.

Repost ;)
For all the dad's - Walmart is having an anniversary sale, and the huge box of diapers(both pampers and huggies) are on sale for $33, as opposed to the regular $50-60.. Stack up while they're on sale! I bought mine last anniversary sale, and I just ran out last week. Time to stock up for another year!

Awesome picture bro! Daddy skills are coming along naturally haha
As for me, it was a long day with a lot of surprises. Wife's labor didn't progress and baby's FHR was decelerating spontaneously one too many times. Had to go for C-section around 6 PM.
First yawn...

Thanks Jackal. Been reading this thread awhile back and was able to get in on some sales for baby stuff I wouldn't have known alone. Gonna read it completely in my spare time from start to finish, hopefully lots of good info to be had.
