View Full Version : OBX Header to stock exhaust - Bolt in?

have a chance to get a good deal on an OBX header for my new 3 (with the downpipe) I do not want to put an aftermarket exhaust on this car as I would like it to be quieter than my current 3 (with a custom built speed3 exhaust), hoping that the header will give the car a little more growl without being too annoying. what I wondering if anyone can confirm if it will indeed bolt to the stock exhaust without any modifications?

Bolded items are not compatible with each other.

you want more growl but you want it to be quieter?!?!? well now... I am just confused

He's explaining that he has 2 Mazda 3. Should have posted that first.
I'm pretty sure header with downpipe isn't bolt on and supposed to be welded.
If you want growl and to be quieter than your 3 with a speed 3 exhaust then you should get an axle back. A header would be annoying if you're thinking of using it for a cruise vehicle.

Sorry I should have been a little clearer. The current mz3 that I have has the stock exhaust manifold and 1st cat, then a cherry bomb in place of 2nd cat going into an OEM speed3 exhaust.
The new mz3 that I am getting is 100% stock exhaust and as I stated in my below post I found that the above setup on my current car is a little loud (especially on the way home from the race track after wrenching on modifieds all night).
So for my new car I was wondering if the OBX header will bolt to a stock mz3 exhaust and also wondering if this would give the car some growl but at the same time be quieter than the speed3 setup on my current car.

I'll take a look at fabbing up an a axleback setup and leaving everything else the way it is.

Try recording a video of the modified exhaust.
Btw this speed 3 exhaust, you left dual pipe or patched one outlet?

first off, from what you described, the sound from your first car is relatively quiet to other kinds of setups. next, putting on a header will just make the car that much louder. do you want the car to be louder outside of the car, or in the cabin? you cant have a growl and be quiet. its like having a high displacement engine, but then putting a crap ton of resonators on it. will still be quiet.

^the OEM Speed3 exhaust on a Gen 1 is damn loud, probably the loudest of all the available CBEs.

Maybe it is loud with a straight pipe conversion ;)

I haven't heard the Corksport in person. It's louder than Magnaflow, HKS, and Vibrant. Granted, I do have a straight pipe instead of a cat.

trust me it's loud...in comparison it makes the Borla & Magnaflow systems sound like a 100% stock MZ3 system however it is not as ricy as the cheap "N1 Style" systems that can be bought on ebay....if I was 18 again the speed3 system would be ok but at this point in my life I am not looking to bring as much attention to the car as it is getting now.
I have found that the stock MZ3 exhaust with a CAI on it makes it a little raspier, but I wouldn't mind a little more...that would be at the tailpipe and not inside the car. I really don't believe that any aftermarket catback on the market for the n/a MZ3 will really do anything more than add noise to the car and why I was leaning towards the header into the stock exhaust as I think that there is a greater chance of a performance gain there.
I was hoping that there was someone that was is running an aftermarket header into a stock MZ3 exhaust system but it looks like i might be the 1st.

its nothing against you or your setup. its just i dont find that setup loud at all if your just running everything stock and adding a ms3 exhaust on and keeping both cats and a few resos. videos would help.
In the large scale of things, if you find that loud, you will most certainly not like the header. there will be more cabin noise then noise comming out of the exhaust tips because you will retain the 2nd cat, and the big muffler/reso in the back..
now if your looking for any kind of hp gain on a n/a application, you wont get much until you run a full system. more air in, more exhaust out. even if you put on a header, it will just be for sound as its still gonna be restricted halfway down the piping. if thats what you want, then go for it.
thats just my honest opinion and 2 cents, --> coming from being fully bolted (ran totally catless and no resos for 2 weeks), 2/3 mounts done, and tuned.

Yeah, headers cause much more cabin noise.
You're technically bottlenecking the exhaust as you're creating more airflow from the engine to the cat, which can cause more exhaust noise.
Just imagine the sound of an intake x 5.

As I have said before I have the 2nd cat removed and replaced with a cherry bomb and then into the speed3 exhaust on my 1st setup and have even mentioned as to how it compares to other systems that I have heard in person (right next to my car)....I am not a young pimple ridden rich kid from the burbs here that is clueless.....I have raced DIRT Street Stock & Modifieds, Drag Cars as well as heavily involved in offroading for the last 15 plus years...I have owned and blown up stuff that most people can only dream of owning/driving and for example the vibrations and shaking from hitting a rev limiter in a dirt race car (in an aluminum seat) literally shakes your eyeballs and is where I get my shits and giggles.....
I am just going to leave this as and end this thread as it seems that most people arn't getting what I am looking to do.....To those that understood what I was looking to do thanks for your input...

If you're referring to me, what you have posted that this header was for your NEW 3.
The best advice I can tell you is go to a meet locally and ask other members that have experience in driving with headers to listen to your car.
If you're looking for a straight up answer, do it yourself and get a decible meter.
Like I had mentioned and others, its much more noise in the cabin. More cabin noise than exhaust = annoying.
Get an axle back and remove the resonator. That's what I did and very comfortable with it.

If you are unhappy with the answers given, it is what it is. what you asked for sounds like a question asked only by those who have little clue as to what they want. you want more cabin noise, put on the header. you want it to be quiet. keep it stock. come out to a meet if you wanna hear the different setups in person just like leechee said. the reason why i stated my setup was because it was pertinent to the topic at hand. other than that, hope your not offended as it sounds like you are and hope you find the setup you are looking for.
edit: curious to see some vids of your DIRT racing, sounds interesting.,,,but hey since your rude, whenever you go to the track, lemme know, id love to see your driving skills in my rear view mirror. :D

You have been involved in racing presumably most of your adult life, have been heavily into offroading for 15 years, and you have a "custom mazdaspeed 3 exhaust" on your 3, you wanna put a ZERO restriction header on it and a SERIOUSLY restrictive stock exhaust?
Post up some pics and info about the machines you have raced and owned, an you will maybe be taken 1/2 seriously.
Wether you like it or not, you clearly dont know shit about increasing performance and efficiency, as you want to decrease performance and effiiency... and while were at it, make the car illegal!!!
Header isnt a legal mod, its a $550 ticket. And then what are you going to do when emissions test time comes? You have any clue how much of a bitch it is to do headers on this car?
**** i CUT my stock exhaust manifold in half rather than taking it out the long way.
You arent prepared, dont know what you are doing, dont know what you want, and people here are giving you THE BEST INFO POSSIBLE
Hell they even invited you to a meet so you could see IN PERSON wich setup you liked the best, so you could get EXACTLY what you wanted.
