In the Akan language of Ghana, "Sankofa" translates in English to "go back and get it" (san - to return; ko - to go; fa - to look, to seek and take). Sankofa is an ancient African proverb characterized by a bird looking back on its past. It asks people to revisit their past in order to correct the mistakes that may affect their future.
On Sunday, April 28, 2013, a Breakdance Competition will be hosted to raise a goal of at least $500 in support of a good friend (Cynthia Rivera) who will be volunteering with an organization called The Sankofa Center. They will be traveling to Ghana to utilize traditional African dance, music, and drama to preventively educate youths and adults about HIV/AIDS and provide free counseling, rapid HIV/AIDS testing, and links to treatment and support services for people living with HIV/AIDS. They strive to use the realms of the arts as a tool to foster open communication and accurate knowledge, and to promote healthy behavior change to protect, empower, and bring togetherness to our human family in the face of this world-wide disease.

As a dancer, artist, and a citizen of a global community, I am excited to extend a welcome to the Toronto Mazda 3 Community to support this humanitarian effort! Please invite your family, friends, coworkers, and strangers!
