Why do you need jack stands if you're going to plastidip your rims? You don't need to jack your car up. There is a way to dip your rims while they're on the car. Google it!

You can stack some wood blocks and use as jack stands. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/04/25/e5abasys.jpg

Ah this thread.
go to ct and spend 40 on a set of jack stands and a jack. You'll use it more than once, and then you can change your own tires and save $40 each season.

I had to do this because I couldn't find my jack stands. Wood blocks cover more surface area. There was a metal piece on top of the wood blocks so the wood doesn't split.

There's no stability though. What keeps the wood from toppling over? ESPECIALLY stacked up wood. Solid blocks wouldn't be *as* bad but for the cost of jack stands there's no reason to.

i use wood when im at my dads shop... he runs a carpentry shop,
ive used wood for my car, his truck and my girls car, just gotta be careful when you lower it, if it starts to split up the car goes and find another peice
and yes solid blocks no stacking oh and also used 12 x 12s

It can't topple side ways since the blocks extend far from the sides of the car. It can't topple forwards or backwards because the front wheels are blocked. I would say my wood jack stand contraption is as good or better than jack stands. That being said, I've found my jack stands and will be using jack stands for conscience sake.

Very bad idea. Do it right or don't so it at all. This is where "the car crushed the person as they were working on it" stories happen.

Stacking wood and using them as jack stands is a huge danger on it's own. Forward/backwards movement maybe "limited" but sideways movement is not as "limited" as you would think. Let's just say, for example, you're working under the car using your wooden stacks as support for your car. Then somebody (a family member or whomever) lost balance and accidentally hit the side of the car. If that hit is strong enough, it can topple the wooden stacks over and you'd be trapped under there, crushed by the weight of the car.
Extreme, sure, but not impossible...
Safety first folks, and it doesn't mean that what works for somebody will also work for another.
Just buy a suitable jack stand and be done with it.

That example (someone running into the car) is a risk on jack stands even.
A lot of people will throw their wheels under the car as a "backup" or I often will leave the jack that I used to lift the car up under another jack point snug if possible (like in the rear, stands at the sides, jack at the rear point). Or I often throw an extra set of jack stands under the car somewhere else that's somewhat meaty but out of the way and not a proper point...I figure if the car is coming down I'd rather destroy pieces of the car and the stands than me.
Safety first for sure.
Also, it's good to have someone else around working with you or the garage open, so if the car does come down you're not left by yourself.

I agree that case would be true if the wood blocks were placed parallel to the frame of the car. However, if the wood blocks are placed perpendicular to the frame, the base of the stand is over a foot (depending how long the wood is.) Thus a lateral force must be great enough to move the car off the 1 foot base.
This guy just wants to remove his wheels and is not getting under the car. In this situation you can use wood blocks if there is no possible way you can get jack stands. As for getting under the car, I would suggest using jack stands since you will need to raise the car much higher compared to just removing the tire. The last thing you would want to happen is running out of wood blocks for the other side.

Either way you look at it, its much more dangerous to use something to hold up the car that is not meant to do so. This is exactly how every horror story of someone getting crushed by their own car starts.

Best thing you can do. Guaranteed you'll use them again and again. Especially since there's no way you can stop at just the rims...

True, although, stands have more transverse resistance compared to stacked blocks. So "safer" somewhat. :)

Hmm, you trust on friction alone that much. If it ain't approved by a competent person, I still won't recommend. :chuckle

What matters (mostly) is how far the top of the support has to shift before the centre of gravity moves past the edge of the support. I would trust a stack of wide, flat boards over a tall skinny jack-stand. Also, cheap jack-stands can have cast parts that are not well made... prone to cracking if dropped.
Another thing to watch out for with jack-stands: make sure they can't topple by sinking in to soft asphalt.

Hell no. I would never go under a vehicle held up by scissor jacks, those things are unstable as hell and are a lifting device, not a supporting device.

man they can support like 5000 pounds each and 5000 X 4 is like 20,000 so like you could lift a boat with that!
look! http://www.etrailer.com/Trailer-Jack/Stromberg-Carlson/JSC-24-IND.html
plus you can make the car all different angles and you can have the front left higher then the back right so you can lay under it easier and stuff

Sure you can lift with them...just like a car jack can lift 3 tons (6000 lbs). Doesn't mean you should use them as a support when the vehicle is in the air. They are not designed for that and I would gaurentee they say as much in user manuals or warning stickers on the things.

I don't know if you are serious or trolling, but this is a TERRIBLE idea. Scissor jacks have virtuallly no lateral stability. One scissor jack works okay because there are three wheels staying on the ground. And I still wouldn't trust it for getting under the car.
