View Full Version : Weird Hoover noise from my engine bay?

Hey everyone,

I have a 2007 mazda 3 hatch back 2.3 L with an exhaust and a cold air intake (all installed over 2 years ago)

So last night before I went to the gym, my car sounded fine, no noise... once I got back to my car after the gym, I started to hear a noise coming from the engine at around 3000 RPM, before this there is no sound ( or its very quiet) and after this there is also no sound. It sounds almost like the hum of a vacuum cleaner.

It makes this sound in park, Neutral, and Drive.. It sounds like it's coming from either the passenger side of the engine bay, from the engine itself, or the back of the engine bay...

Has anybody had a similar experience and maybe can shed some light on it?

Thanks!

is the coupler still attached on your intake? its a cold air, so im assuming it has atleast two which may have a hole in it or are no longer attached properly.

I thought of that, I checked it and tightened it, no success :( The sound is coming from the opposite side though, thats the only part of the engine I DONT hear the sound from

timing belt?

Dont timing belts usually hiss instead of making this type of sound?

hmm, same car but manual. I heard something similar a couple nights ago but I noticed it from outside at idle.. no idea what's on the passenger side that would make a hum besides the belts.... Alternator maybe? Anyway, subbed for updates. Good luck

Uh wow. That's definitely not the sound I heard. I'm probably just making a mountain out of a molehill for my car's random hum but the hoover sound is weird.

Have you actually checked the belts/pulleys/tensioner? Maybe a rock or something got caught somewhere.

It's when he revs it in the video. I hear similar noise to that. Not the squawking that is heard when he is idling. It only really presents itself when I hit 2800 RPM and stops after 3500 RPM

Check the motor mounts.

Check the motor mounts.

Motor mount was changed last summer. The passenger side one. Maybe it's another one that went? How would I check

timing belt?

No timing belt on our cars, it's a chain.

Noise sounds like a bearing. Maybe the tensioner pulley bearing or perhaps the alternator bearing. You could try taking the accessory drive belt off and spin the pulleys by hand to see if you can feel any roughness in the bearings.

sorry, meant the tensioner belt? ionno the correct terminology. the belt on the outside of the engine on the passenger side. not the internal timing chain.

Looks like it's the AC compressor that's broken. :(. It's an expensive fix so I'm gonna wait. Since it isn't urgent

Sucks. Just cut the a/c belt off and pull the fuse. Don't need a/c anyway :)

I have the same sound occasionally on my mazda5. I believe its the valave sticking.. caused when the oil is already degraded or is near needing to be changed. I only hear this when Im close to my oil change schedule and disappear after the oil change. You may need to get your tappets adjusted if it gets worse. But for me i dont worry about it, I only hear it before I need an oil change and when the car is cold. This is the "2nd opinion" I got from other mechanics who've seen my car.
