View Full Version : STEERING WHEEL SHAKING

Hi everyone,

My steering wheel shakes / vibrates when I am driving between 95 km/h and 120 km/h. This also occurs when I brake between the same speed. Rims / tires were balanced at Simply Tire two months ago. What could it be be? Would I need an alignment? Is something broken?

If it shakes while your braking usually thats the rotors being warped. If is shaking while your driving between certain speeds its probably the alignment or the tires need balancing.

Sounds like your wheels may need hubcentric rings.

This, have the same thing going right now. I always thought you wouldn't need hub rings with 3mm spacers but I guess I was wrong

I've been running the rims for the past 4 years though. Would rings really be needed? I've swapped them off every winter as well and had no issue. Im thinking its an alignment issue b/c the rims / tires were balanced. If it was a tie rod or a bearing, I think it would shake / vibrate at lower speeds as well.

Could very well be an alignment issue. With mine, I just had an alignment done so I'm fairly certain that's not it for me

Again, if its only doing it at certain speeds it wont be the hub rings, its the alignment. And get your rotors looked at if its shaking while braking.

I highly doubt it's the rings. Allan has always provided them for me. I didnt even know my Aftermarket wheels would need them (at the time) and he provided them for me. I'm sure if you didn't Allan would have mentioned it.

(on that notes once the rings go on do they ever come off without trying? Did my own wheels and im extremly paranoid)

they can come out, but you would probably notice. Next time you change your wheels look inside, you can just pull it out and put it back in just like that. If it was the Hub rings missing or damaged, the vibrations would be constant.

It doesnt feel like vibrations (and I def dont feel it on the weel), but my car feels "wobbley". I'm pretty sure it's just the road and the OEM tires, I'm just a bit paranoid since it's my first realy DIY.

if it's a "wobbly" feel, not a vibration kinda feel it's most likely warped rotors, especially if it increases heavily when pressing on the break. If this is the case, you should not wait to replace the rotors (and pads which could be unevenly worn now). The in-out force on the break piston can wear out the seal and cause a brake fluid leak at the calipers, in which it would be very expensive to fix

Well when I hit the breaks the breaking doesnt feel like its any different than before. Would I feel the "wobble" on the breaks or the whole car shaking. Not sure either happens. Any other way to check (besides taking it to the shop)?

You wouldn't feel it on the whole car.

One way you can check it is if you lift the car and spin the wheel (with the wheels off) and see if there is a slight wobble back and forth than there is clear warp; or if you hear on-and-off rubbing on the brakes. These would imply they are very warped. but they can also be warped badly and not visible to the eye, minute warps could cause major wobbles and damage. So viewing the rubbing yourself would only show if the rotors were SEVERELY warped

This!! At the very least, this would be the first obvious step before checking random things like hubcentric rings lmao....

You'll know if your rotors are warped. If they were your steering wheel would shake when braking, like mentioned above. Before changing my insanely warped rotors 2 weeks ago, the harder I stepped on the brake, the more violent the steering wheel shake was. Back to normal now finally. Was so annoying! :)

Well I have a servicing coming up next week so I'll just get it checked then. Thanks for the info.

Ah okay. Nothing unusual when I brake, it's been the same.

with new rims and tires being installed. always go back 2 weeks later for them to ensure everything is copasetic. If they don't tell you that and something happens they are at fault. generally this is how lugz come out. After the two weeks they must tighten lugz down again.

This may not apply to you but it is how things should be done. If anything ever happened after that 2 weeks you could sue.

I hope everyone reads this especially if you are unaware.

really wouldnt want to sue myself.

bad alignments don't cause shaking issues, they just cause poor handling and bad tire wear... warped rotors don't cause shaking while driving, only braking

lack hub centric rings maybe the cause, but I'm more inclined to believe poor wheel balancing is the cause... it happens every so often because of lazy tire shop workers who are in a hurry to get the job done and not installing the wheel weights at the proper places
take the car back to the shop and have them check the wheel balance again!

^ Ahh yes this is exactly right... confused the two, although I always thought they balanced the wheels anyway as part of the alignment?

check yours rims, they might be bent or something. Surprised no one mentioned that :chuckle

Id go back and get the balencing checke again, a weight could have fallen off something could have happened you never know!

Happened with my dads sonata!

You can get vibs with the alignment being off, either way all of this I said in the first post...

Oh shit I completly forgot about that. My front right (at the time) wheel always had issues with the weight falling off. Alan is really great about it and fixes it, but I'm much to lazy to get it balanced again, since I'm getting new wheels soon(ish)
