View Full Version : How do I keep my Black car looking cleaner?

Hello all.

It seems that as soon as I wash my Mazda 3, it looks dirty the next day and dirt starts to show. I know it is a black car and dirt shows up more, but what can I do to resist the dirt that seems to show up more than other colours.

I was thinking that a new coat of wax might help, but I am not sure.

Thanks, in advance, for your ideas.

After the vehicle goes through the wash, clay, wax, seal process, talk to one of our detailing sponsors about Opticoating your vehicle. I find the opticoat really helps keep the car clean. Also, it makes a quick wash or dusting make the car look much better.

Does it work on not perfect paint? My car has a couple swirls/chips, not sure if it would be worth opticoating (plus Bike)

I would also like to know about better cleaning, because my first hand-wash after the winter left a number of tiny grass or tree bits STUCK on the passenger side door panels, just above the side-skirts and a soapy sponge won't get it off.

Best to message one of our detailing sponsors. I am not an expert.

You may need to use something stronger, or clay the car.

Turtle Wax Ice Premium Detailer after every wash and a California Duster should do the trick.

I know you are a big fan of the Turtle Wax Ice products, but I find they leave a film. Other quick detailers I find are cleaner.

I personally stay away from any Nufinish and turtlewax products, no particular reason, just I feel those products are tailored for the general public who wax maybe once a year and not car enthusiasts looking for more specific applications.

My mazda as well as my work truck (f-250) is black, I work in ready mix concrete plants and really dirty dusty places i have been using this fastwax stuff ( says you can use even when vechile is semi dusty, which i have on my work truck and so far it has not hurt the paint) and it seems to leave a nice film free finish and resists dust pretty well.

My black car usually always looks flawless, but with the all the rain we've been getting though it hardly looks its best this year.

The usual routine is clay bar then wax twice a year with poorboys Nattys paste wax purchased from eshine.ca:
http://www.eshine.ca/prodimages/PoorboysNatty.jpg

After that, every single time I wash my car I use a quick detailer. Turtle Wax Ice (the only turtle wax product I use, it does a better job than Mequires I find). Gets rid of all the leftover water spots and leaves it looking shiny.

It's pretty simple to keep it looking nice if you're willing to put a little extra time into it. In fact I find black hides dirt better tan other cars. Just an observation I've made despite what most people think ;)

This, plus pick yourself up a california brush to keep in the back of the car. A quick dust saves a lot of time instead of spraying down the car.

Well we first don't know if OP has gone through a proper detail before putting on a sealant. Putting quick detailer won't solve all the problems and it does get a bit pricey if you do use it in terms of what OP has said; which is every other day, and not everyone will wipe their car that often.

If OP has gone through a proper wash clay wax recently, then a better wax should replace the current one.

If the OP hasn't gone through a wash clay wax recently, then it should be done for better results.

If results come to show that the car still has dirt then seal it with something like Opticoat.

If it's still dirty after a day then park your car elsewhere.

Not since early May. I appreciate all of the input and think that I am due for a wax!

Yes you are. Good advice from all about the claybar and sealant and wax.
So wash, then clay, wash then sealant and/or wax. If you want to put both sealant and wax then put the sealant first, allow to cure overnight then add wax. Sealants will last longer than waxes. So as mazdabetty said twice a year is good with regular washes in between.
If you want to opticoat, you'll probably want to throw in a one step polish in there. There's professional opticoat (Opticoat pro) and professional Cquartz (cquartz finest). These coatings require a lot of prep and you can only get these from our detailing sponsors. Concours touch offers both coatings while Elevated Car Care offers Opticoat pro.

It could be tar or tree sap or rustproofing that's gluing the grass and tree bits to the car. If you want something you can buy locally it's AutoGlym Tar remover or from eshine or wisdom detail Tarminator or Tar X. Anyway these products will remove protection from the car so best to wash and seal or wax afterwards.

If you find its leaving a film, either your doing something wrong or it may be that the detailer is reacting chemically to whatever other wax you may be using. I use ICE wax and detailer exclusively so no filming, always an excellent shine and the car always looks clean. In fact, the guys at work were joking today, (especially because all the rain lately), that I must have a 'detail-guy' hidden in my trunk lol.

I can apply it on swirled paint but maximum benefit is applying it on polished or new paint because then you can lock in the shine I will produce from the paint. Swirls and chips can be fixed no problem.

Yes it's worth it, well worth it to me at least. Basically how much is your time worth? Opti Coat makes your car stay cleaner, longer and when you do have to clean it, it will be a breeze as supposed to cleaning a car without any protection. Touchless washes will be twice as effect. It also has additional benefits like making the clear coat harder and more resistant to etching either from water, tree sap or bird droppings.

I have a client with a FR-S and thanks me once a month for opti coating his vehicle. He has 2 small children and can't afford to look after his cars like he use to. He still likes to wash his cars on a weekly basis but he never has to wax again and his car always stays gleaming. If you think this convince it worth it then contact me and I am sure we can set something up. PM works best, my work email is having some problems right now.

Are we discouraging using an old credit card to scrape?

Yes, INDEFINITELY! Credit Cards, although great for getting you cash and rewards don't work as well on car paints. You'll end up scratch your paint, my advice would be to soak the area in a quick detailer or diluted soap solution and gently message the area with a quality microfiber. Then you can rinse and it should go away, if it's extremely hard to remove then it might be time to clay bar it but also use it gently.

When you can, you should try poorboys black hole glaze polish and quick detailer plus afterwards or natty blue wax. All highly reviewed for black cars.
