Ok so I bought a used Forge V2 BPV from the states for essentially $90 + $20 shipping. The guy shipped it via USPS as I had asked.

Delivery notice is on my door this morning, says I owe $31. The fnck? I know this can happen if you ship thru UPS or whatever, but I have NEVER in my 7 years of buying car stuff online from the states, had something like this happen thru canadapost. I went to canada post's website and thefinalcost.com and everything points to a worst case fee of $10-$15 (which still is annoying, but not a catastrophic ripoff like 31)

Anyone have any experience with this? What should I do?

You probably didn't pay tax initially.
I got hit with a $42 COD for my high flow cat which was $350 ish

That's too much, Canada post has a fee of either $9.95 or 10.95 (can't remember which one) Then you pay the tax. I get hit with dutey every now and then, most recently was something that was marked as $100, and I only payed around $20. There is a place on the Canada post site where you can download a form and dispute the fee.

I'm going to take a guess that the seller probably declared a higher value than what you paid on the customs form which in turn you are paying the taxes on.. If you do pick the package up, let us know what the declared value is?

Will do. I think I can pick it up and dispute later and then they reimburse me if it is accepted. Sounds like everyone gets screwed sometimes, maybe I should just not stress about it (like i normally would)
My mom just told me that my dad left a pair of old sunglasses in their hotel room in the states, the hotel UPS'ed it to their house and he got charged $25 duty on his own pair of glasses lol.

Yeah you can dispute it after. UPS sucks, you will always get hit with them, I ordered a mouse pad from the states it cost $21 after shipping USPS wanted to charge me $22 in duty.I was like "Ummm No send it back) I no longer buy anything from the states if it's shipped UPS/Fedex. USPS/Canada post is better, some times you will get hit, usually on higher priced orders, but when you do it won't cost near what UPS/Fedex would charge

If they have to process any documents/paperwork they are going to charge you

they don't work for free.

if you want all your items shipped for free then move to the good old USA. But then you're paying for your health care. Difficult choice right there.

This is why I plan on moving close to the border eventually. Best of both worlds :P

They charge the 9.95 then tax on the value of the item, but they still charged you too much, It should of been around $21 total, Unless they marked the value of the package higher.

This would be my guess, I'm thinking they charged tax/duty on the value of the item and shipping.
Some flat fee ($9.95 in this case?)
+ Tax on the order ($110 * 0.13) = $14.30
+ 6% duty on car parts ($110 * 0.06) = $6.60
= $30.85

I've gotten pretty good at getting things over the border, even UPS...certain carriers/situations you need to use a third party broker.

*edit*
And actually, the tax/duty is charged on the canadian value of the parts, so if it was $90 USD (= ~$95 CDN) it would be even a smidge more given exchange rates right now.

As the guys have mentioned, the seller marked full value of the item new.

same thing happened to Mr Wilson when he bought a used Tial bpv from a member on msf.

hehe just by 10 bucks. He said no initially then changed his mind.. seemed very friendly.

Anyhow, after reflecting on it I think what happened is that the guy probably shipped it in the original box with all the original parts (just like in the picture... it looked like new). The people at the border probably looked at it and just charged me original cost for it (or some standard cost) assuming that the guy lied about the value or something. Think I've heard of that happenening before. Anyhow, I think i'll go pick the damn thing up and then file for an adjustment and hope for the best.

If you have to ship by UPS - opt for the express shipping (not UPS ground). Not only do you get it much faster (2 days?), the brokerage fee is covered as part of the shipping cost.
