Hey guys, Ive been looking around the web for some ideas on a rev limiter. I have been searching throught this forum, and google because i didnt want to look like an ass. On my car (2012 skyactiv sedan) I dont have a rev limiter where it will bounce, but more of a fuel cut where it just stops. So im looking at a Ignition Limitir so I dont rob the engine of fuel.
Ive heard of the Bee-R limiter http://www.importperformanceshop.com/beerrevlimiter.html
As well as this Pertronix Digital Rev limiter http://www.pertronix.com/prod/ig/drl/default.aspx
and the MSD http://www.msdignition.com/Products/RPM/Timing_Controls/RPM_Controls/8728_-_Soft_Touch_Rev_Control.aspxIm not 100% sure about this last one, but i think it would work but thats exactly why I made this thread.Looks like MSD is more of a muscle car company.
Now before you ask why, its simply just because. Im not sure if our cars are even compatible with this but let me know what you think. Ill keep doing more looking, but i appreciate your time.

I like the digital ones because having 100RPM resolution is handy.
If this is a just-because, then go ahead wit hit, but I think the Skyactive engine design might not like having un-fired bursts in the chamber.

Ive thought about that as well. I know its a long shot but do you guys think emailing some at mazda who could give me some insight on the motor would yield results? Cause there really is no information about doing mods on these cars and the long term effects. It is just because i want one, but i will not jeperdize my motor because of it.

Uhm why? Shift before the limiter...you will just artificially lower your rev limit with anything aftermarket and you'll void your warranty.

well its not for shifting purposes per say, more for the sound/ backfiring :p
also id like what i do to be reversible because of servicing and what not

That's an even worse reason to do it...
I hear they make these things you can stick in your exhaust to make the car sound like it has a turbo too :bang

oh, you want a 2 step, check out the W.O.T box, but i dont think thats all you need to make it backfire like that. but i also know nothing about the bee*r. and the turbo whistle was in relpy to someguy lol

yeah pretty much. I was looking at the WOT box aswell.
The backfiring is because since this is a spark/ignition cut instead of a fuel cut, fuel will still get mixed in, but not ignited

If you want to blow out your cats and waste fuel and have mad build up on your valves and destroy your warranty and risk ****ing your engine and generally look like a ricer...knock yourself out.

Does anybody here on the forum have a WOT box or equivalent? I read about the WOT box on here i believe, so somebody needs to be using them.
I get what youre saying about the cats and wasted gas, since fuel is being used and unburnt, and i dont need to worry about getting shit on my valves since its DI (im understanding the whole DI thing by saying this right? the gas should be directed right into the chamber, not past the valves) but my intake would get dirtier quicker.
Now you might think it's rice, and totally would be if youre driving around town bouncing off your 3100rpm limiter. I want this for shits and giggles and its nice having the ablilty to changed when it goes off. If i dont like it, sell it. Im also curious as to how it would void my warrenty (because i actually dont know)

Direct injection does mean it's into the cylinder directly...although you'll be passing a ton of semi-burnt weird ultra rich fuely crap out past your exhaust valves into your headers, past your O2 sensors, through your catalytic converters and out the tail pipe...potentially igniting anywhere along that path. Us speed 3 guys try very hard to keep the car from dumping unburnt fuel out the exhaust (which is what the stupid rich tune and/or a BOV do to us).
Warranty wise, anything that messes with the normal operation of the engine/ecu will void warranty...pretty much anyone with an accessport is technically void. If your engine, fuel or exhaust systems were to have issues because of this they could deny you coverage.

awesome reply, thanks man. All makes perfect sense. So the 'backfiring' is just the rich fuel getting ignited somewhere in the exhaust system eh? i can see that being pretty bad on my high compression engine, because it has me thinking it might ignite prematurly right out of the valves with all the heat. Can backfiring cause gases to flow back up into the cylinder?
Would a OCC help with all that unburnt fuel? or thats just for the EGR function?
In addition, a dump valve on turbo cars. Thats used to prevent the rich unburnt fuel from igniting on its way out the exhaust pipe?
As im typing this Ive come to the conclusion that this isnt a wise idea, even if i really like it. But this is great information we got here.

I don't know if I can answer all those...you might want to check with the engine gods (celest for instance).
The backfiring is the unburnt fuel dumped into the exhaust and igniting somewhere...I'd imagine it's usually in the headers or cat or similar where it's quite hot. I don't know if the exhaust valves would be open when that happens or what sort of back pressure and weirdness would happen.
OCC is not used on the hot side, it's on the intake side...the EGR delete is for some of the exhaust gas being recirculated back into the intake, usually people just block this off but it throws off emissions.
Dump valve? Not sure what you're talking about there? If you mean the bypass valve (BPV), it's again on the intake side which dumps pressurized air back into the intake (or BOV when it's out to atmosphere) to prevent the turbo from stalling out when the throttle closes. With the MS3 we do fueling based on a MAF sensor (for the most part at WOT) and if you dump metered air out to atmosphere then it will have injected fuel for air that never shows up. That fuel then gets pumped back out the exhaust and makes things messy.

This man knows that's up. If you just want flamethrower type dealio, I think the hot rod guys just add a spark plug with a switch to the tailpipe, and shoot gas in there but I'm not 100% if that's how they do it
