View Full Version : Ignorant people in the HOV lane

So yesterday the traffic from Appleby Line to the split off was terrible and I was sitting in the fast lane crawling and I started to count the amount of people driving in the HOV lane alone. Like that's ridiculous. I mean yes traffic sucks but cutting in and out of it because you think you can and you won't get caught? That's just wrong. I counted 20 people driving alone in it. Am I the only person who thinks that's wrong and ignorant. The best was the asian lady behind me. She comes off the HOV lane and gets behind me with nobody else in the car and then just past Walker's line goes across the solid line and completely cuts someone off in the HOV lane only to stop 2 cars down and try to get back into the fast lane. What's wrong with these idiots. Sorry for the rant but I think its rude and ignorant and cops should be patrolling that more and more.
You shoulda flipped her the bird and called the cops or something.
I cant stand ppl like this. They are the scummy people who are of the lowest kind. Would probably park in a handi/mothers parking, or cut in line at a store.
I swear this world is going to shit.

I see this everyday driving the QEW to work. Its insane the number of people that do it.
The only thing that erks me more are the @sshats that use the on ramp as their passing lane, I like to "block" those people when I can see them racing up.

Let’s all be honest. The HOV lane is useless, the amount of cars that use it vs those that sit in traffic on the hwy.. Well it doesn’t make sense to have. yes i get they are trying to promote car pooling, but that lane should have been an extra highway lane as it is obvious with the stop and go we need one if not two extra lanes on most highways. The 410 in Brampton is a good example where the HOV lane would be useless but an extra highway lane would be more useful and effective to help direct traffic.. Well at least to the 407 when it crunches down to 2 lanes until it opens again at the 403.. But that’s another issue all on its own. all in all they should kibash these HOV lanes and change them to just regular traffic lanes, tell the bus and truck drivers to stay in the slow lane, not run into the middle lane or passing lane :rant:flaming:bang but anyway.. The HOV lane isn’t the only highway issue. but i don’t think it’s really something they should have put so much focus on, when it’s obvious the amount of cars that do travel on it are more few and far between, and it would have been most effective as just an extra lane.

Nobody gives a flying f... anymore when it comes to driving. When I'm on the 404 everyone does it especially people in suv's, van's, or trucks...cops are never around so people are always doing it. I'm sick of it too...and to go and call the cops you literally have to be following the guy before cops arrive cause if you're not he's long gone.. :/

lol I have found my kindred spirit! But people using the HOV lane alone is jut ignorance. The only way the HOV lane works is if the rules in regards to it are followed. I mean it doesn't work otherwise. People need to realize that they may get ahead a few cars but end up looking like a complete tool

This is true, but actual practicality aside you must admit... when you have 2+ people in your car and the highway is at a dead stop... the feeling of pulling into the HOV and blasting by 1000s of cars is hard to beat! lol.
Just me?
And yes, people who drive in it alone... :getout

Definitely see abuse of it everytime I'm on the QEW. Unfortunately the honour system no longer works for the vast majority in our society. Everyone seems to have a "me first" attitude.

My dad does it as well, but he has a 53 Foot trailer behind him so its easier for him occupy 2 lanes hehehe.
For those that do think HOV is useless, my wife and I work at the same place, and we drive use the HOV lane a lot to get around all the traffic (you know what traffic I am talking about if you have drove the QEW in the morning Toronto bound), it does save us a lot of stopped time in traffic, but its also a pain in the arse to get back over to get off the highway.
Everyone seems to think its the fast lane and you need to be doing 130 if you are in it.
The best is when i saw someone use the GO-bus dedicated lane on the DVP a couple of months ago. I didn't see it coming or i would've had my middle finger at the ready.

The beauty of positive offset LOL.
I had a guy once almost put his car into the median on the side of the highway trying to get off at Brant st before me.
Then there is the guy I watched in the winter go nose first into the yellow barrels because they decided 100 feet to late to get off. I watched the car go straight vertical and and come back down on its wheels.

This type of driving behavior has been around for a long time ( replace HOV lanes with the Bus/taxi lanes ) although people are much more brazen about that now.

It's DEFINITELY useful, especially when you're headed to Niagara/further as you can just kind of sit in the HOV lane until it ends. However, I really don't understand the reasoning behind people wanting to go super fast in that lane, just makes it that much easier to get pulled over.

This x100000000. I drive on the QEW everyday. And I sit there and wait in traffic patiently. Meanwhile you got these *******s going in the HOV and thenn on the other side you got the guy who goes to the end of the ramp then jumps to the other ramp and go to the very end. I block these idiots too. Hell with you. You think your special and have all the right to do that then go to the end of the merge lane? I hate idiots. And as you all know (even at 3pm traffic is terrible from Appleby to the cutoff) and all these guys (I've found its guys in SUV's, Luxury cars and crotch rockets) and they think its fine. Its not fine. Now with all that being said there was something that was great yesterday. Driving home yesterday between Appleby and Walkers on the QEW in the fast lane and I look over at the HOV lane and on the shoulder there is an OPP Tahoe and he had a Dodge Ram 3500 Dually Quad cab pulled over for driving in the HOV lane. I found that great seeing as how I posted this thread 6 hours before haha.

I have seen a few people pulled over in the HOV before, the cop cars are low enough they can sit in a few spots where the shoulder is wide enough on the HOV side and you don't see them until its too late.

Me too. Cops on bikes do it too. I remember the one day I was merging onto the QEW and the guy behind me cut me right off as I was half merged and wouldn't let me in then bolted through the lanes into the HOV lane. All I could think of was what a moron you are. So I keep driving and 2 km later there's the OPP cruiser pulling him over. Justice was served for me that day haha.

Ummm ... he is allowed in that lane ....
"The City of Toronto operates 5 HOV corridors each with a specially designated lane on an arterial road with use restricted to qualifying vehicles (typically buses, automobiles, and trucks carrying three or more occupants and motorcycles and scooters plated and usually includes taxis and cyclists)."

Oh, I was unaware of that... Although I don't see why they should let motorcycles use the HOV lane with only one rider. Cyclists would understand...plus some hov lanes also have a cycle lane right next to it.

Because at 1 rider, you're already likely at maximum capacity on a motorcycle, if not, then at least half capacity (unless you're in Vietnam or Thailand where they fit 6 people on one motorcycle), which technically fits the description of high occupancy if you think about it...
I think they need to install cameras at random points along these highways to catch these bastards who abuse the HOV lane.

They could always argue they have better carbon footprints than cars. (I'm reaching here)
Wow 3 or more occupants, the 403 and QEW in the Oakville/Burlington area only require 2 or more and they're still pretty empty. Do they still let you go in the HOV with a hybrid car? Even if it is only one person in the car?
Black first gen MS3 with a rust spot in the center of the hatch right under the glass. On the QEW all the time.

There is really no point for the HOV lane. What they need to do is make a lane and post a minimum speed limit of 120.00 so I Don't have to sit behind the drivers who drive 80 in the fast lane. Now that would make more sense

I think the HOV lane is necessary and works exceptionally well. I drive almost every evening to Milton often enough with my wife that its ease and swift flow from Trafalgar to Bronte has been a God send. Some days I find it rather annoying to be car pooling in the midst of rush hour and having to notice almost every car has a single occupant. HOV lanes are meant to be an incentive, the reduction of green house gases secondary to less motor vehicles on the road per person thus reducing congestion is a well studied concept. The immediate benefit to the HOV driver is a relatively quicker transit time whilst the end benefit is a collectively shorter commute for all.
With no 18 wheelers with horrendously slow accel/decel and idiots who gander at accidents on the opposite side to disrupt the flow of traffic, I'll choose an HOV lane over an extra lane any day, even if just for the benefit of driving faster. Let me know when's the last time an extra lane has been proven to be an effective long-term solution to decreasing traffic congestion AMIDST record annual increases in transportation #'s

I wish people in Ontario had better respect for road laws.
I'll admit that I've gotten a bit more impatient and aggressive but it was mostly due to Mercedes Benz suvs acting like they were king of the roads. (Generalizing here, I know. But after a while you notice it REALLY is mostly these guys). As well as people driving slow in the fast lane.
The multiple times I've driven in the states is almost reinvigorating because over there they understand that the left lane is the passing lane and the right lane is the cruise/slow poke lane. 9.5/10 times the car moving slower than the car behind him will move over.

I had quite the conversation out the window one day with some asshat who was doing that as I was going from the middle lane into the fast lane, to add he was not signaling .
You are ok to use the HOV with a baby in the back seat as your 2nd person right?
