Battery Boost Question

My girlfriend was trying to boost her car. I don't know much about cars but she initially tried to boost from these instead of what is shown in the manual:

I can't get it to boost so I have it sitting on a battery charger. Did she fry anything doing that?

How exactly did she connect the jumper cables? To the rubber caps? Some how to the wiring?

I can't really see how it fried anything as she couldn't make an electrical connection (they are insulated). You don't get a battery to boost - you get it to hold a charge. That being said if the battery is stone dead you must "boost it" (jump it) first before you charge it. BTW It is better to charge the slowest charge possible than setting it to a higher charge.

I am questioning why the battery needed to be charged?
