View Full Version : Rain Gutter Needs Replacing

So, the rain gutter on my garage needs replacing (about 3-6 feet longer than a Mazda3 hatch). Also, I think I would need my downspout to be moved since I have to disconnect from the ground. I figure it might be better if it where at the front of the garage emptying water onto my driveway (sorry, I don't have any pictures).

Does anybody happen to know somebody who does this kind of work? Or does anybody here do this kind of work? It looks easy but I have no clue how to do this. Thanks.

I'm in the Steeles and Warden area.

where does the original drain to? straight above the ground? or straight INTO the ground? i know some gutter lead into an actual drain to prevent foundation erosion and reduce the risk of basement flooding.

Call a trough guy and he will pump out some trough for you ina couple of mins. Then for the drain you basicly cut an X where you want it and tada, drain hole. Trough is easy enough. 2 person job tho.

It drains straight into the ground. I have no problem just cutting the downspout and covering up the hole but my rain gutter looks like it is separating from the roof of my garage (it's not a tight connection any more). I suppose it's not imperative that I fix it but I thought maybe I could do the whole thing all at the same time and just move the downspout to the top of my driveway.

I don't know any trough guys. I wish I did though. I figure more people would head over to Rona or Home Depot and just pick up some. I'm not sure how you even go about cutting it though. Also, I don't even know how to attach it to my roof!! Let alone taking the old one down and disposing of it.

If your eavestroughs are separating from the facia, then they need fixing most definitely. Not doing so can cause an excessive and costly amount of damage; Walls, Windows, Facia etc.;

If you don't know what your doing its' well worth the cost of getting a pro in to fix or replace them. As for the downspout it's not simply move it. The eavestroughs must be angled correctly to the spout for proper water flow, or again your asking for trouble. Just Google 'Replacing Eavestroughs GTA' for a list of contractors.

I didn't think it would damage the walls so I'll look into replacing it.

The gutter doesn't even look like it's angled properly any more so that's another reason why I wanted to replace it. I was hoping for a reference because I was afraid some contractor I find via Google would take me for a ride.

Always get a few estimates first, before deciding on a contractor. Ask around the neighborhood or at work for references, unfortunately I have none..sorry. Couple of years ago my mom had the eavestroughs replaced on her large bungalow, it ran around $1200 if I remember correctly. The guy did an awesome job and replaced the metal eavestroughs with a very good plastic/vinyl type. Unfortunately this was up near Barrie.

Thanks for the info. I'll ask around at work. I don't know why I didn't even think about that. I just need one section replaced which is the length of my garage which looks to be about 4-5 feet longer than the Mazda3 Sport.

"Ask This Old House" has a segment on gutter replacement. Does a pretty good job of walking through gutter installation.... although you on your own for rotten rafter tails etc.

How are your shingles?
It may be worth while to change both at the same time.

If your shingles don't need replacing, do it yourself.
